St. Paul And Woman's Status, J. T. Mueller Jan 1938

St. Paul And Woman's Status, J. T. Mueller

Concordia Theological Monthly

Evidently the article has been read with much interest and at least some approval in wide areas, for no sooner had it appeared than the question was submitted to us whether or not it may be accepted also in our circles as essentially correct and Biblical. The problem, we think, deserves attention, since the question of the veiling and public speaking of women in church assemblies is still causing some pastors considerable vexation of spirit, though perhaps more than enough has been written on the topic in our church periodicals, commentaries, and other publications. As long as the earth will …

The Pastor And Youth;, O. P. Kretzmann Aug 1937

The Pastor And Youth;, O. P. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

At any given moment in his ministry the pastor in active congregational service is face to face with three age groups. A local church is a cross-section of the family of God. There are the old, for whom the ministrations of the servant of the Word are largely a preparation for a near eternity. There are the middle-aged who must be carried through sorrow and defeat even though their religious habits and attitudes have been fixed by the years. And there are the young, at one and the same time a very precious and a very unstable part of the …

The Pastor And His Sermon, E. J. Friedrich Feb 1937

The Pastor And His Sermon, E. J. Friedrich

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the course of the last fifteen or twenty years much was said and done to discredit the pulpit as an instrument of power in the building of the kingdom of God. Even within the sanctuary itself strident voices proclaimed with prophetic finality that the pulpit had lost its power and that the day of preaching had passed forever. Systematic efforts were put forth in many quarters to supplant the preacher by religious technicians in the fields of worship, education, social service, and organization; and men quite generally staked their hopes for a virile and world-conquering Church upon agencies and …

Notes On Chiliasm, Th. Engelder Jul 1935

Notes On Chiliasm, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

Chiliasm vitiates the Gospel principle. Salvation is by grace alone. Salvation is by the Gospel alone. This truth constitutes the principle of Christian theology and of all Christian thought. It dominates Christian theology. It is intolerant of the conception, in any form, that salvation can come to man by any other way than by the Gospel of grace.

The Thorough Exegetical Study Of The Sermon Text The Conditio Sine Qua Non For Good Sermonizing, J. H. Fritz Mar 1934

The Thorough Exegetical Study Of The Sermon Text The Conditio Sine Qua Non For Good Sermonizing, J. H. Fritz

Concordia Theological Monthly

The questions, Shall the preacher use a text? and, Shall the preacher preach the Word of God? are not identical. The preacher should always preach the Word of God, but this he might do without the use of a sermon text. The use of a sermon text, however, has not only come to be an established custom, but there are good reasons for continuing this custom: it makes for bettor preaching.

Reflections On The Status Of Our Preaching, E. J. Freidrich Feb 1934

Reflections On The Status Of Our Preaching, E. J. Freidrich

Concordia Theological Monthly

While not a few of those who answered our questionnaire stated that our preparatory schools and seminaries cannot, at least not as a rule, be held responsible for poor preaching heard in our circles, the general opinion seems to be that the alarming symptoms evident in our pulpit work do "reflect in a measure upon the training received at our preparatory schools and seminaries."

Reflections On The Status Of Our Preaching, E. J. Freidrich

Concordia Theological Monthly

Among the eighty brethren who replied to the questionnaire submitted in the lost issue of this journal sixty-five went on record as being deeply concerned about the preaching that is being done in our Synod at the present time. They claim to have observed certain definite symptoms which must be regarded either as positive evidences of decline or as a handwriting on the wall warning us that a decline is bound to come unless we give more attention to the preparation and the delivery of our sermons. The following paragraphs present a number of the most interesting statements received on …

Reflections On The Status Of Our Preaching, E. J. Friedrich

Concordia Theological Monthly

Christian preaching never continues very long on the some plane. On the contrary, it is subject to a continual alternation of revival and decline, and that not merely with reference to its literary and homiletical qualities, but above all in the substance, the power, and the effectiveness of its message. There is nothing extraordinary about this; for "human progress of every kind is usually not steady and continuous, but rather goes by waves, like the rising tide. Declension and revival, forward and backward, up and down, these are the common Christian phenomena, individual, local, general. Even the most superficial study …

When the theme is the chief thought expressed in the text and the parts are deductions from the text, then we have an analytic- synthetic outline. When the theme is a thought derived by way of deduction from the chief thought of the text and the parts are those expressed in the text, then we have a synthetic-analytic outline.

Preaching On The Augsburg Confession, Theo. Laetsch Apr 1930

Preaching On The Augsburg Confession, Theo. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

Preaching on the Augsburg Confession. The four-hundredth anniversary of Luther's Small Catechism, celebrated wherever the name of Luther was known, has undoubtedly been a source of richest blessing. Pastors and people become better acquainted with its history and contents, learned to appreciate this little book the more highly, and thanked God the more sincerely for this precious gift. The sermons preached on the Catechism during 1920 were not in vain, but productive of splendid results, sure as Is.55, 10. 11 still holds good. Let us hope that similar streams of blessing will flow from the celebration of the four-hundredth anniversary· …
