International Review of Humanities Studies
The attacks on October 7th, 2023 sparked a new wave of escalation between Israel and Palestine with global news coverage. Though there is coverage on both sides, many are calling out the Western news media for being biased in their reports. This paper explores the diction used by Deutsche Welle (DW) when reporting Palestine and Israel from December 1st to December 8th, 2023. The paper will use the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) theory by Norman Fairclough to process the data using a qualitative approach. The study aims to examine whether the diction used by DW journalists in their reports reflects …

"Pearls And All": June Cleaver, Symbol And Myth, Judy Kutulas
Journal of 20th Century Media History
June Cleaver, the fictional matriarch of the Cleaver family on the 1950s/60s sitcom Leave it to Beaver has become a powerful symbol in American society, representing a particular version of motherhood that can be read as desirable or old-fashioned. How June became a symbol as well as a myth is what this article is about, a blend of series’ particulars, the continued willingness of the actor who played June, Barbara Billingsley, to play into the stereotype of June, the changing perspectives of boomers who watched her, and the changing possibilities of American women’s lives.

An Integrated Model For Teaching Information, Media, And Language Literacy, Maria Shardakova
An Integrated Model For Teaching Information, Media, And Language Literacy, Maria Shardakova
Russian Language Journal
This paper explores the connection between the rise of critical approaches to teaching media in Russian language classrooms and the political events of the last decade, during which Russia has increasingly positioned itself as an adversary to the Western world. The Russian state’s systematic weaponization of its media, severe restrictions on freedom of speech, and suppression of independent voices have created an environment where propaganda permeates all forms of social and public expression. This saturation has led information consumers to dismiss media content as manipulation, sometimes overlooking voices of resistance. As a result, it is crucial to equip students with …
Author Vs. Audience: Bridging The Gap Between Interpretation And Intent, Adrian R. Ross
Author Vs. Audience: Bridging The Gap Between Interpretation And Intent, Adrian R. Ross
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Since Roland Barthes first published his essay “Le mort de l’auteur” (“The death of the author”) in the 1960s, literary critics have reconsidered the role of the author in the interpretation of media. Barthes and others have argued that the author’s intentions matter little after a work of art is handed off for public consumption, and that art is up for interpretation with the audience playing a greater role in its meaning. Others, however, argue that the author is the ultimate authority on the meaning of their work, and that authorial intent is the most important aspect to consider when …

Inclusions And Exclusions In The Narratives Of War: Gulf Arabic Press Coverage Of Russia-Ukraine Conflict, Muhammed Musa, Ahmed S. Mansoori
Journal of International Women's Studies
Domestic policies of nation-states as well as trends in media development have further consolidated the role of mainstream media in shaping social and political processes related to international conflicts. Deregulation of the media landscape in Gulf countries has seen the side-by-side existence of both government and private media. In the current Russia-Ukraine conflict, the mass media are significantly shaping citizens’ perceptions and understanding within Gulf countries. Similarly, the kind of information disseminated by the media on the conflict plays a role in shaping the behavior of social and political structures within nation-states. While the media alone do not determine government …

New Media To Promote Jambi People's Struggle Museum Based On Digital Marketing, M Rian Indra Eftritianto
International Review of Humanities Studies
A museum is a place to record world civilization development, especially for preserving culture and history. The museum is also used for permanent exhibitions of objects that deserve public attention, such as historical, artistic, and scientific heritage. In this regard, the museum functions as a place to serve learning, educational, and fun needs. However, nowadays, the museum is only considered a place to store antiques and ancient objects. The lack of museum enthusiasts is caused by the perception that museums are not significant places to broaden insight and knowledge. Besides, there is a lack of publications and information about museums. …

Then, using whichever online medium they choose, students call out the offender and express their anger to the audience of their choice in order to meet a specific goal. Finally, students reflect on their expression of anger and their experience creating their response. Overall, the goal is for students to combine their knowledge of feminist theories and …

The Experience Of White Captives Among The Natives Of The Old Northwest Territory Between 1770 And 1850, Analucia Lugo
The Purdue Historian
In the late 18th to mid-19th centuries, hundreds of white settlers were taken captive by Native American groups across the Old Northwest Territory. Reasons for their capture varied from revenge to adoption, however, the treatment they received greatly depended on the captive’s gender. While females were more likely to be kept alive and better-taken care of, males faced a greater probability of facing violence or even death, though torture was common among both groups. Many captives undertook participatory roles within their respective captive communities, with some deciding to assimilate completely into a new way of life. Captivity narratives …

Creating "Good Government", Linda Hoffman Kimball
BYU Studies Quarterly
Creating an image that represents the quest for good government was a meaty challenge. There are so many opinions, so many priorities, so many personalities. How do power, choice, cooperation, force, fear, aspirations, and even geography impact how a society will structure itself and relate to others whose priorities vary?
Drugs, Ethnic Profiling, And The American Perception Of Colombian Immigrants, 1979-1990, Laurisa Sastoque
Drugs, Ethnic Profiling, And The American Perception Of Colombian Immigrants, 1979-1990, Laurisa Sastoque
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
This paper analyzes how the media’s portrayal of Colombian drug trafficking turned into a stigma that affected the Colombian community in the United States. By reviewing periodical sources between the years 1979-1990, this paper argues that the formation of the drug trafficking stigma stems from the media's almost exclusive portrayal of Colombians as drug traffickers, within a context of U.S.-Colombia relations that encompassed tensions regarding responsibility for the growing transnational drug problem. Ultimately, this study proves that the drug trafficking stigma for Colombian immigrants is inherently tied to how American society viewed the Colombian government’s actions in the war on …

Experiencing Cinematic Vr: Where Theory And Practice Converge In The Tribeca Film Festival Cinema360, John V. Pavlik
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Cinematic virtual reality (VR) production has reached enough capacity to support a festival. This paper offers a theoretical framework of VR narrative structure to critically examine one such festival in cinematic VR. The spotlight here is on the fifteen entries in the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival Cinema360. Findings suggest that although the field of cinematic VR has advanced substantially in recent years in terms of narrative design and user experience, there is still a considerable distance for VR storytellers to travel to fully utilize the nature and potential of the developing medium of virtual reality.

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
On November 10th, 1983 the TV movie, The Day After aired in the living rooms of homes across America. This dramatic portrayal of a nuclear attack on the citizens of Kansas and Missouri, scared Americans watching. Depicting the desolate landscape of a post-nuclear-attack world, paired with the feeling of inevitability of nuclear destruction, the American people began to change their feelings about nuclear weapons. But why does this movie matter? And how can we trace any meaningful influence this movie had on American Culture and understanding of nuclear war? This paper intends to expose the ways The Day After changed …

•Thanks to Email from Toby and Karl Hekler, Yoel Arbeitman, and others, we heard of Fr. Owen Lee's eloquent tribute to Jussi on an intermission feature during the February 5th Metropolitan broadcast of La Traviata. Luckily, we had a tape going during that broadcast, anticipating some sort of "happening" on Jussi's birthday. Thus we can provide for you the precise transcript of Fr. Lee's statement. He pointed out that he had been asked to discuss his favorite singers for that broadcast, but that some of his personal choices, like Zinka Milanov, had already been chosen by others.
