Food For Thought: Rituals In Place Based Learning, Natalia Pilato
Food For Thought: Rituals In Place Based Learning, Natalia Pilato
International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education
In my mother’s kitchen lasting bonds among family, friends, and newcomers are created. Using that space as a point of departure, I explore the significance of pedagogical places outside of classrooms that serve as flavorful ingredients for performative and participatory learning. This article articulates ways in which rituals associated with Sicilian cultural traditions are interwoven and complicit in establishing dispositions for socially engaged learning and teaching in the arts, showing how an ethic of care can transcend generations. With a focus on place-based learning, making art and enjoying food are investigated to show how healthy productive relationships, appreciation for beauty, …
Chawton House And Its Library: Legacies And Futures, Kim Simpson
Chawton House And Its Library: Legacies And Futures, Kim Simpson
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640-1830
In a review of Women’s Writing, 1660-1830: Feminisms and Futures, Paula Backscheider draws attention to “the miracle that is Chawton House, whose conferences nurtured these essays” in the collection. This essay will examine the legacy of this unique institution and explore the futures for the organization both as heritage site and as home to a substantial collection of women’s writing of the long eighteenth century. The community encouraged and nurtured by Chawton House since it opened to the public in 2003, as is so often the case with all things related to Jane Austen, complicates divisions between the academic …

From Passive To Immersive: Metaverse As A Pedagogical Approach In History Class - Presenting A Constant Reminder Of Historical Remnants And A Customizable Reality For Future Preferences; Beirut As A Case Study, Hiba Mohsen, Mohamad Tohme, Rawan Nashi
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
It is widely acknowledged that passive, non-immersive strategies of teaching adopted in history classes in Lebanon do not offer the right platform for knowledge retention in students. With that said, virtual reality and the use of Metaverse as a pedagogical approach is prophesied as the most apt to invoke a positive attitude from children towards the topic being studied, and thus, in this case, it increases their awareness of the existing built heritage they live amidst. This research sets out from a recent project implemented by Beirut Arab University, together with three UN agencies. The latter aimed for “developing children …

Heritage Figures In Contemporary Algerian Feminist Poetry, Naima Boulkaibet
Heritage Figures In Contemporary Algerian Feminist Poetry, Naima Boulkaibet
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
Heritage in poetry may be one of the most studied themes. It is an essential element in saving identity and singularity (uniqueness) wanted by poets in their poems. That was manifested with modernism poets who coexisted with heritage and grasped the way they can use it and the charming beauty it adds to the poem. The manifestation of using heritage in the Algerian modern poetry in general and feminist poetry in particular confirms the poet’s recognition of the historical and civilizational awareness included in their poetry by the use of heritage. This study is an exploration of the way that …

History Or Heritage? An Analysis Of Ghana’S Primary School History Curriculum, Charles Adabo Oppong
History Or Heritage? An Analysis Of Ghana’S Primary School History Curriculum, Charles Adabo Oppong
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Abstract
At a time that history has gained its place in Ghana’s basic school curriculum, considerable differences of opinion arise, not about the subject’s significance in the school curriculum but concerning the legitimacy of the subject title - that is, whether or not the subject should be referenced ‘History of Ghana’ or ‘Heritage of Ghana’. The different opinions reflect Lowenthal’s (1998) observation that history and heritage are separate disciplines. However, the two subjects are often used interchangeably (Mermion, 2012) and “are habitually confused with each other” (Lowenthal 1998, p. x). While expert academics may be at ease with the distinctions …

Reflections Of Arabic Literature On Architectural Representation, Othman El Obeidi, Aya Salamah, Rola Ayoub, Abed El Karim Owaydat
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Literature and architecture have long been connected where both are forms of art; literature is a verbal form of art whereas architecture takes a social form. Both domains play a major role in heritage inheritance and representation and are immensely linked to each other; each is capable of representing and embodying the other. Gloomily, in light of digital technology, Information Age, and onslaught of globalization, the reflections of the practices of Arabic literature on architectural representations, after being practiced together since ancient periods, have retracted in recent times thus architecture in the Arab cities has started to veer far away …

Approaches In Critical Literacy Between The Old And The New, Fathy Boukhaleh
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
The following research deals with a very fundamental problematic related to interculturalism; classical and modern. What is understandable from interculturalism is mutural in- fluence between the elements of culture in Arabic literature and those of the Western literature in the domain of criticism. The existing dialogue between human cultures. summarizes the factors of convergence between the cultures especially at the level of academic theories. Eventually, modern Arabic literary studies took a great deal from western studies mostly in approaches since the westen were forerunners in fouding scientific approaches in different domains. Arab critics were influenced by these western approaches due …

Panji And Sekartaji On The Move, Lydia Kieven

Since the millenium, the Panji tradition has undergone an increasing process of revitalization and transformation in Java. It shows a broad spectrum of concepts and forms: benefit of a long forgotten cultural heritage, academic approach, popularization, innovation, and its use for strengthening cultural identity. Starting on a grass-roots and community level of artists, intellectuals, and villagers, focusing on the manifestation of values and symbolism, the Panjimania has entered governmental and institutional level throughout recent years, focusing on popularization of art and entertainment in big formats. This boom is also reflected in research and publications on an academic and semi-academic level. …
A Village Comes To Life: The Interpretation Of Henry Ford's Greenfield Village, Claire E. Herhold
A Village Comes To Life: The Interpretation Of Henry Ford's Greenfield Village, Claire E. Herhold
The Hilltop Review
Of all American living history sites, Greenfield Village, in Dearborn, Michigan, is one of the most interesting. Founded by Henry Ford and opened in 1929, Greenfield Village consists of 90 acres of nearly 100 historic buildings, all moved to the site from around the country and reassembled in a vague village formation. Unlike Colonial Williamsburg, the site is not historically significant and represents no one geographic location or time period. While in keeping with Ford’s vision of celebrating small-town life and the humble origins of many great thinkers and innovators, this structure has presented challenges for both the staff and …

The Rebuilding Of Memory Through Architecture: Case Studies Of Leipzig And Dresden, Nataša Danilovic Hristic, Nebojša Stefanovic
Journal of Urban Culture Research
The focus in the paper is on the physical reconstruction of the city core. This is especially important in areas that have suffered discontinuity in the development, as a result of the historical flow of events and war disaster. The specificity of the German cities is the combination of the cultural heritage of different periods that survived the war destruction, renewed structures, more or less according to the originals and reconstructed parts of the urban tissue in the style of the contem-porary epochs and trends. One of the important conclusions is how we treat our urban heritage, no matter from …

Creating Heritage In Ubud, Bali, Adrian Vickers
Creating Heritage In Ubud, Bali, Adrian Vickers
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In Bali, heritage is more-or-less synonymous with tradition. The popular view of what constitutes Bali’s heritage tends to focus on the village and wider district of Ubud. Through examining at the strategies employed by the lords of Ubud during the middle part of the twentieth century, we can better understand how the image of heritage sites is created. In the case of Ubud, the construction of centre of tradition was carried out through alliances with local artists and with expatriates, notably Rudolf Bonnet. The latter were able to mobilize publicity and networks to attract resources and elevate the district’s reputation.

This paper traces this history of collection, exhibition, and performance practice of wayang at the Colonial Institute, from 1950 known as Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from colonial times until the present. It demonstrates the entanglement of colonial and postcolonial power structures, collection, and exhibition legacies of the colonial past. The emphasis on tangible elements of performance practice …
“‘The Strata Of My History’: Reading The Ecological Chronotope In Wendell Berry’S That Distant Land”, Ellen M. Bayer
“‘The Strata Of My History’: Reading The Ecological Chronotope In Wendell Berry’S That Distant Land”, Ellen M. Bayer
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
This article examines Wendell Berry’s short story collection, That Distant Land (2004) through the lens of the ecological chronotope. Berry’s characters cultivate an intimate relationship with their physical environment, and the land, in turn, inscribes their history within it. Furthermore, it is through a shared sense of responsibility to the land that the characters foster a sense of community, shared history, and timeless connection with each other. My analysis of Berry’s fiction employs the notion of the ecological chronotope as a lens for understanding the environmental implications encountered at the intersection between time and place in That Distant Land. …

In The Name Of Profit: Canada’S Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Reserve As Economic Development And Colonial Placemaking, Richard M. Hutchings, Marina La Salle
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
Taking a critical heritage approach to late modern naming and placemaking, we discuss how the power to name reflects the power to control people, their land, their past, and ultimately their future. Our case study is the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Reserve (MABR), a recently invented place on Vancouver Island, located in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Through analysis of representations and landscape, we explore MABR as state-sanctioned branding, where a dehumanized nature is packaged for and marketed to wealthy ecotourists. Greenwashed by a feel-good “sustainability” discourse, MABR constitutes colonial placemaking and economic development, representing no break with past practices.

How Can We Know The Dance From The Dance?: Exploring The Complexity Of Staging Dance Legacy Works, Elizabeth Mcpherson
How Can We Know The Dance From The Dance?: Exploring The Complexity Of Staging Dance Legacy Works, Elizabeth Mcpherson
Journal of Movement Arts Literacy Archive (2013-2019)
Staging works from our rich concert dance heritage relies on determining what the “real” dance is, particularly when the work is no longer currently performed. Because choreographers frequently alter their choreography, creating multiple versions of a dance, identification of a definitive version can be a complex process. Adding to the complexity, there is the involvement of the stager, performers, and the audience who are each active or passive participants in the ultimate performance of a work. Through conversations with prominent stagers, scholarly discourse, and personal experience, the author investigates some of the key concerns and questions regarding staging dance legacy …
