Our Anniversaries (1855-1955) (1930-1955), Walter R. Roehrs Dec 1955

Our Anniversaries (1855-1955) (1930-1955), Walter R. Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

The current issue of the CONCORDIA THEOLOGICAL MONTHLY greets our readers in festive colors. There is ample reason for donning holiday dress. The year that is drawing to a close marks two milestones in its career. As the direct lineal descendant of Lehre und Wehre (1855) our journal is observing its one-hundredth birthday: It bears the marks of age and the changes that come with growing old. In its younger days it spoke to its readers in the language of Luther as Lehre und Wehre and continued to do so for many years. Also in German the homiletical section had …

The Story Of "Lehre Und Wehre.", William F. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

Having in 1947 observed the centennial of our dear Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we can in 1955 recall that 100 years have elapsed since Lehre und Wehre, our first theological journal, was called into being. As all students of American Lutheran church history know, Lehre und Wehre was not the first paper or journal published by our church. That honor goes to Der Lutheraner, which C. F. W. Walther, supported by several other pastors in Missouri and Illinois and by his congregation, founded in 1844. If anything required faith and courage, it was the issuing of this biweekly, because for its …

Dr. C. F. W. Walther As Theologian, Francis Pieper, John Theodore Mueller Dec 1955

Dr. C. F. W. Walther As Theologian, Francis Pieper, John Theodore Mueller

Concordia Theological Monthly

When we try to depict Dr. Walther as theologian, we must, above all, discuss his doctrine of justification, for his attitude toward this doctrine supplies the clue to his whole line of action in his life so full of controversy.

The Foreword Of "Lehre Und Wehre" For 1862 (Vol. 8)., C. F. Walther, William F. Arndt Dec 1955

The Foreword Of "Lehre Und Wehre" For 1862 (Vol. 8)., C. F. Walther, William F. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

From the very beginning of our venture the charge has been voiced in various quarters, and not long ago again in the Kirchliches Zeitblatt ( 1861, No. 7) of Ehlers by Pastor Fengler of Lowenberg, that Lehre und Wehre and the Missouri Synod lack "creative activity,'' that the fathers are quoted too much, and that even the old material is not offered in a new form entitled to be called original. It may therefore be worthwhile to look at this charge a little more closely. As we prepare to do so in the present foreword, our motive is by no …

The Christian Hope And Our Fellow Man, Martin H. Franzmann Nov 1955

The Christian Hope And Our Fellow Man, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

John the Baptist at the dawning of the new age, the coming of the Kingdom, called men away from ties of home, nation, Temple, and cultus into the desert, to meet there the God who was with Israel before Israel had a home, a national life, a Temple, and a cultus. The repentance which he preached was a great act of detachment. Likewise Jesus detached His disciples from the traditional standards of clean and unclean, pointed to Himself as greater than the Temple, and promised to build His ’εχχληοι̇α, His people of God, as inheritor of Israel's promise but detached …

Let Jeremiah Speak Today!, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer Nov 1955

Let Jeremiah Speak Today!, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is regrettable that a prophet of the stature of Jeremiah who has so much to say to our generation is virtually unknown among our people and not too familiar among our pastors. Here was a man who, as his name indicates, was "hurled into the life of his nation” (Baughman), in much the same way as Christians today are brought face to face with the problems of their country and community. This was a man who was ''born to be at odds with and in opposition to the whole world" (Welch), just as the modem disciple of Christ finds …

The Religious Peace Of Augsburg, Theodore Hoyer Nov 1955

The Religious Peace Of Augsburg, Theodore Hoyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

This year marks the 400th anniversary of the Religious Peace of Augsburg, an event regarded so highly and of such importance in the history of the Lutheran Reformation that the 100th, 200th, and 300th anniversaries were celebrated throughout the Lutheran Church in the respective years. Our fathers have regarded it as a special intervention of God to save the Reformation from total collapse. In an article sketching the history of this Diet of Augsburg one of the early leaders of the Missouri Synod. F. C. D. Wyneken, calls the adoption of this peace treaty "the end of the Reformation, when, …

The Doctrine Of Justification In The Lutheran Confessions, Herbert J. Bouman Nov 1955

The Doctrine Of Justification In The Lutheran Confessions, Herbert J. Bouman

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the 1538 edition of his commentary on Galatians, Luther speaks of "this one and firm rock, which we call the doctrine of justification, that is, that we are delivered from sin, death, and devil, not through ourselves (nor certainly through our works which are of lesser value than we ourselves), but through outside help, through the Only-begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ." "If the article concerning justification falls, everything falls." "This is the chief article of the whole Christian doctrine, which comprehends the undemanding of all godliness. It is, therefore, of prime importance that it be well understood and …
