Complicated Lives: Free Blacks In Virginia, 1619-1865, Sherri L. Burr
Complicated Lives: Free Blacks In Virginia, 1619-1865, Sherri L. Burr
Faculty Book Display Case
Would the United States have developed differently if Virginia had not passed a law in 1670 proclaiming all subsequently arriving Africans as servants for life, or slaves? What if the state had not stripped all Free Blacks and Indians of voting rights in 1723, or outlawed interracial sex for 337 years?
Complicated Lives upends the pervasive belief that all Africans landing on the shores of Virginia beginning in late August 1619, became slaves. In reality, many of these kidnap victims received the status of indentured servants. Indeed, hundreds of thousands of free African Americans in the South and North owned …

1844 - The History Of Oregon And California And Other Territories, Robert Greenhow
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
Writing principally about the portion of North America border on the Pacific Ocean between the 40th and 54th parallels of latitude (Oregon), Greenhow found it necessary to also include the regions known as California that extended southward from the Columbia River to the Californian Gulf. Recognizing that the territories were becoming increasingly more important due to the advancement of the population of adjoining countries towards the territories; from the constant increase of the trade and navigation of several countries claiming powers in the Pacific. The difficulty of effecting an amicable partition of the territories was becoming more urgent. …

A History Of Yugoslavia, Marie-Janine Calic

[Introduction To] In The Flesh: Embodied Identities In Roman Elegy, Erika Zimmerman Damer
[Introduction To] In The Flesh: Embodied Identities In Roman Elegy, Erika Zimmerman Damer
Bookshelf
In the Flesh deeply engages postmodern and new materialist feminist thought in close readings of three significant poets—Propertius, Tibullus, and Ovid—writing in the early years of Rome's Augustan Principate. In their poems, they represent the flesh-and-blood body in both its integrity and vulnerability, as an index of social position along intersecting axes of sex, gender, status, and class. Erika Zimmermann Damer underscores the fluid, dynamic, and contingent nature of identities in Roman elegy, in response to a period of rapid legal, political, and social change.
Recognizing this power of material flesh to shape elegiac poetry, she asserts, grants figures at …

[Introduction To] Soda Goes Pop: Pepsi-Cola Advertising And Popular Music, Joanna K. Love
Bookshelf
From its 1939 “Nickel, Nickel” jingle to pathbreaking collaborations with Michael Jackson and Madonna to its pair of X Factor commercials in 2011 and 2012, Pepsi-Cola has played a leading role in drawing the American pop music industry into a synergetic relationship with advertising. This idea has been copied successfully by countless other brands over the years, and such commercial collaboration is commonplace today—but how did we get here? How and why have pop music aesthetics been co-opted to benefit corporate branding? What effect have Pepsi’s music marketing practices in particular had on other brands, the advertising industry, and popular …

[Introduction To] Stalin's Master Narrative: A Critical Edition Of The History Of The Communist Party Of The Soviet Union (Bolsheviks): Short Course, David Brandenberger, M. V. Zelenov
Bookshelf
The Short Course on the History of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (Bolsheviks) defined Stalinist ideology both at home and abroad. It was quite literally the the master narrative of the USSR—a hegemonic statement on history, politics, and Marxism-Leninism that scripted Soviet society for a generation. This study exposes the enormous role that Stalin played in the development of this all-important text, as well as the unparalleled influence that he wielded over the Soviet historical imagination.

[Introduction To] Chinese Revolutionary Cinema: Propaganda, Aesthetics And Internationalism 1949-1966, Volume 48, Jessica Ka Yee Chan
Bookshelf
Engaging with fiction films devoted to heroic tales from the decade and a half between 1949 and 1966, this book reconceives state propaganda as aesthetic experiments that not only radically transformed acting, cinematography and screenwriting in socialist China, but also articulated a new socialist film theory and criticism. Rooted in the interwar avant-garde and commercial cinema, Chinese revolutionary cinema, as a state cinema for the newly established People's Republic, adapted Chinese literature for the screen, incorporated Hollywood narration, appropriated Soviet montage theory and orchestrated a new, glamorous, socialist star culture. In the wake of decolonisation, Chinese film journals were quick …
