When Death Strikes: How The Criminal Justice System Lets Members Of Marginalized Communities Be Victimized By Serial Killers, Crius Paulus
When Death Strikes: How The Criminal Justice System Lets Members Of Marginalized Communities Be Victimized By Serial Killers, Crius Paulus
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
The variables within criminal investigations predispose members of marginalized populations to be victimized by serial killers. In this paper secondary and primary sources from the Merrill-Cazier library and internet were studied to understand the variables in and out of law enforcement control within criminal homicide investigations. Primarily, the focus was on the variables in police control–highly focused on cognitive biases. Police biases surrounding a victim's identity(ies) impacts their perceptions and responses to an investigation. Racism, misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia within law enforcement can have explicit negative effects on investigations. The case studies of Samuel Little, the West Mesa Murders, and …

Born Or Lived: Forming Personal Identity, Nicholas Hatch
Born Or Lived: Forming Personal Identity, Nicholas Hatch
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Identity is one of the most significant aspects of an individual's life. Your identity affects how you see yourself and how others see you. An individual's identity is very complex and many factors contribute to the formation of their identity. Considering this, this prompted the question; What are some of the biggest factors of identity formation and why are they important? Looking through various scientific papers as well as the experiences of individuals, I have come to the conclusion that sexual orientation, gender identity, personal circumstance, and lived experience are among the more significant factors of identity formation. They are …

Online Vs In Person Schooling- Which Is More Effective?, Allie Payne
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
When I started this project, I was hoping to learn if online school was more effective, or in person school was more effective. I was hoping to learn whether or not I should register for online classes next semester. At first, I was hoping that online school would be a better option, because of the flexibility it entails. Research was conducted using library and internet resources to locate both primary and secondary research. For this study, personal accounts from the past and present online students shared their personal experiences with online learning. After conducting research, I have concluded that while …

Women's Self-Harm In Shakespeare, Madison Harris
Women's Self-Harm In Shakespeare, Madison Harris
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Throughout the works of Shakespeare there are examples of women, especially wives, physically harming themselves and threatening violence to others as a way of proving themselves. My research explores how and why Shakespearean wives seek to prove their worthiness by physical acts of violence and how an early modern audience might have understood this. While there has been research about violence committed against Shakespearean women, there is little research on women utilizing violence as a method of proving their trustworthiness, loyalty, and bravery to men. These questions are particularly poignant when considered within the context of marriage. I use secondary …

How College Students' Mental Health Is Impacted By Working, Katie Swain
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
College students are faced with many different challenges and through this study I wanted to investigate the impact having a part-time job had on full-time college students' mental health. The main goal of this study was to help me decide if getting a part-time job would be beneficial or detrimental to my mental health. Research was conducted using the USU library and internet resources to locate both primary and secondary sources. For this study, professor and student point of views on the subject were taken into account to create a well-rounded argument. Through my research, I have found that getting …

Teacher And The Machine: Perceptions Of Computer-Generated Writing Feedback, Amanda Mackay
Teacher And The Machine: Perceptions Of Computer-Generated Writing Feedback, Amanda Mackay
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
As technology has gradually been integrated more and more into classrooms, one technological tool has emerged: automated writing evaluators (AWE). These evaluators offer nearly-instant, computer-generated feedback for students' writing. Many teachers and school districts have required students to use these writing evaluators for their academic writing; they are often used to save teachers time and energy. However, in retrospect, do students feel that they have become better writers through using AWE? Do experts in the field of teaching English recommend the use of AWE? What may be the future of these evaluators in the classroom? In this study, we looked …

Memoirs Of The Foreign Legion, Maurice Magnus, D.H. Lawrence
Zea E-Books Collection
Maurice Magnus was 39 years old when he enlisted in the French Foreign Legion to join the fight against Germany in World War I. Magnus was an American expatriot living in Rome—a theatrical agent, tutor, newspaper correspondent, writer, editor, and literary entrepreneur. He soon discovered his error—the Legion he found consisted largely of German exiles, prison-avoiding felons, and contemptuous French officers. Magnus spent about six weeks training in North Africa before a transfer to southern France provided the opportunity to desert and flee back to Italy. The Memoirs recounts his brief disenchanted tenure as a Legionnaire. After his military service …
