In 1887, John L. Goss acquired Crotch Island, located off Stonington, Maine, and with his father, Job Goss, started a granite quarrying business. Goss died in 1936, but the company carried on with Max L. Button becoming president; Fred Torrey remained as treasurer and local manager, with William McKenzie serving as general superintendent. In 1953 the Deer Isle Granite Corporation purchased the Goss property on Crotch Island.

Great Northern Paper Company began with construction of a mill in Millinocket, Maine, in 1899, followed by the acquisition of an existing mill at Madison, Maine, and the construction of a third mill in East Millinocket in 1906. Great Northern filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2002. The mills in Millinocket and East Millinocket were purchased by Brascan Corp. in 2003 and the company was renamed Katahdin Paper Co.

Collection includes correspondence, subject files, publications, contracts for material and labor, maps and plans, photographs and production records.

The C.A. Donnell Company, Portland, Maine, was a brass manufacturer founded ca. 1837 by Charles A. Donnell and catering to the shipping trade. In late 1886 the company became Knight Bros., brass founders, plumbers and coppersmiths, owned by Algernon and William Knight of Falmouth, Maine.

Collection contains incoming and outgoing correspondence, 1861-1896, and receipts for company purchases, 1846-1896.

The John Franklin Day papers contain personal correspondence from the 1920s through the 1960s reflecting Day's literary interests, efforts to publish his work and his activities in various social organizations. Also includes scrapbooks, diaries, photographs, postcards and artifacts, especially those relating to the Day family, the East Maine Conference Seminary and Wesleyan University as well as files about Day's writing and manuscripts of poems and essays. Client files from his career in insurance are also found in the collection.

The Coe family papers consist primarily of business records of the brothers Eben S. Coe and Thomas Upham Coe, with a few papers of Thomas's wife, Sada L. Coe. The materials reflect the involvement of the Coes in land acquisition and management and the lumber industry in the northern part of Maine, as well as Eben Coe's partnership in the S.R. Bearce and R.C. Pingree companies in Lewiston, Maine. Much information is also included about the administration of the very sizeable estate left by Thomas Upham Coe at his death in 1920.

William Henry's business correspondence includes regular updates sent to him in Calais from several employees in Cooper, including his son, W.W. Henry, concerned with whether equipment is in working order and hiring an engineer and crew. Frank N. Davis' business letters are primarily from those working at other gas light companies in the United States and Canada, including the National Electric Light Association and Northern Light Company (both in New York,) the Canadian Electrical Association in Toronto, the Fredericton Gas Light Company in New Brunswick, and St. Croix Electric Light Co. in St. Stephen, New Brunswick.

The papers are arranged in two series: Papers of O.H. Wakefield and Papers of Ralph J. Wakefield. There are no sub-series.

The papers of O.H. Wakefield consist mainly of financial records, especially daybooks, 1884-1917, of activities in the general store and the lumber business. Ledgers, 1878-1890; a lumber book, 1879-1899, of lumber cut and sawed; and a memo book of spool bar accounts reflect Wakefield's primary occupation.

The collection contains financial records of a boat shop and dock owned by Herbert E. Tracy in Winter Harbor, Maine. The collection contains five volumes of records. Tracy records expenses for services he provided to boats in his yard, including repairs, refittings, berth rentals, towing charges, wharf accounts, and sales of all kinds of nautical supplies. One of the volumes, listed as a memo book, contains town financial records for Winter Harbor for 1896, as well as a list of names and addresses of yacht and ship owners who used Tracy's services.

The collection contains three volumes of guest registers, 1897-1904, for the hotel. Volumes two and three have printed blotter sheets advertising various businesses in Maine. They also contain printed guides listing hotels for each state, their rates, etc. Book plates in the registers identify them as belonging to the library of Inez and Webb Noyes, Pinawa II, Onawa, Maine. Pinawa II was the Noyes family camp built in 1937 to replace Pinawa I, built in 1901 or 1902. This camp had been given to Webb and Inez Noyes as a wedding gift in 1927 and burned in the 1930's.

Records of the Columbian Packing Company date from 1896-1926 and include petty cash account books, daybooks, ledgers, bank account ledgers and check registers as well as a sales book from 1916-1919. Records of the Columbian Canning Company, 1907-1930, include copies of incoming telegrams, ledgers, daily cash and charge records, a fish account book, a sales book, and payroll records. The collection also contains various items which document efforts to develop railroads in Castine, Maine. Included are minutes of meetings held by citizens of Castine in 1871 "to consider and promote such measures as will make Castine the western terminus of the proposed railroad from the St. Croix to the waters of the Penobscot." Later records include preliminary surveys done for the Castine and Bangor Railroad in 1887 and 1888. There is no indication that this line was ever built.

The collection contains primarily financial records and a large number of photographs of camp activities.

The financial records include check registers and invoices, 1967-1974, for goods and services used by the camp each summer. The photographs include copy sheets used in preparing the camp's yearbook, Driftwood, as well as copies of the yearbooks themselves, 1963-2002. Most of the extensive photograph collection is undated and shows unidentified campers and staff engaging in a variety of outdoor activities. The collection also contains a few administrative records of the camp office, including correspondence, camp brochures and drafts, and a staff manual.

The collection contains administrative files, architectural and mechanical drawings, patent agreements and trademark registration documents, company publications, paper samples, etc. Also included is the company's collection of approximately 3000 plans and drawings of its property, buildings and machinery for its sites in Lincoln, Orono and Brewer. Records of the Madagascal Dam Company, a subsidiary of the Eastern Corporation chartered in 1871 to maintain dams and control water flow on Madagascal Stream in an area adjoining some Eastern Company property, are also contained in the collection.

The collection consists primarily of records of the treasurer's office of the railroad. Especially represented are records of Isaac Redington, treasurer in the early 1850's, and S. Stark, treasurer in 1854 and 1855.

The collection contains legal documents, 1850-1858, mostly writs of attachment and a few deeds. A small group of Maine Central Railroad writs, 1866-1870, is also included. These are followed by folders with information about company stocks, notes, and other financial dealings, 1849-1856.
