Two letters of Lida Calvert Obenchain (pen name “Eliza Calvert Hall”) Dallas, Texas, to “Max” and “Frances.” The first, dated 13 April 1932, thanks Max for a gift of lead pencils; the second, dated 19 July 1933, mentions the couple’s young son Kearney, gives family news, and mourns the effects of the Depression on the likelihood of publishing three books she has completed. She also recommends the reading of biography over fiction and lists her own recent reading.

Barr, Rochester, Kentucky. The first outlines her research and plans for three “Green River” books (one volume was eventually published as Run Me a River) and refers to Mrs. Barr’s assistance in providing informants for the project. The second letter provides her thoughts about an interview in which her estimation of other authors and her own public image were inaccurately reported.

She expresses pride in being commissioned a Kentucky Colonel (she was the first woman awarded the honor) and hopes that the Laffoons will enjoy her new book.
