Recording Of Marco Borogni’S Vocalise Etudes For Trumpet, Dominik Campora, David Brown Jun 2019

Recording Of Marco Borogni’S Vocalise Etudes For Trumpet, Dominik Campora, David Brown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The experience of preparing, completing, and evaluating the progress of my ORCA project over the past twelve months has helped me grow exponentially as an aspiring orchestral musician. Specifically, preparing the Bordogni etudes has helped me achieve a heightened musical sense of phrasing, analysis, and musicality. Our musical and academic objectives of the project were to provide a reference for future trumpet performance students on vocalise studies (such as these,) and the concept of overall sound production, phrasing, and virtuosity. We were able to record a CD that will be documented and preserved in the trumpet studio for students to …

The Healing Power Of Music: Documentary, Maren Cline, Robert Walz

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I created a documentary about the clinical use of music therapy intervention. The documentary is an in-depth exploration of two music therapy clients through the intervention process. The American Association of Music Therapy states, “Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.”

Body Knows, Spirit Dances: Somatic Approaches In Cross Cultural Dance Exchange, Lauren Evans, Marin Roper

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In June 2018, I accompanied three other undergraduate Dance major students and my mentor to Bangalore, India where we observed, trained with and learned choreography from five Indian dance artists over a two-week period to learn and teach autobiographical solos reflecting a personal ‘search for the sacred.’

Orchestral Snare Drum Production, Peter Fullmer, Dr. Matthew Coleman Jun 2019

Orchestral Snare Drum Production, Peter Fullmer, Dr. Matthew Coleman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this project was to disseminate to a wide audience of percussionists the process of building an orchestral snare drum in order to equip them with the knowledge needed to make one themselves. This included highlighting in video the materials, tools, and skills required for the procedure, which would be posted in the public domain for all to view.

Celebrating Utah County In Multi-Media Recital With Progressive New Music And Photography, Clark Evans, Steven Ricks Jun 2019

Celebrating Utah County In Multi-Media Recital With Progressive New Music And Photography, Clark Evans, Steven Ricks

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The primary goal of this project was to better the quality of knowledge and education of a handful of composition students. By working one on one with each of them over an extended time, I would lend them my experience as a string player in order to help each of them feel confident in their understanding of how to write for the instrument. I wanted to enable their creative process without inhibition, but also refine their technical abilities in writing.

The Pygmalion Project, Sophie Determan, Roger Macfarlane Jun 2019

The Pygmalion Project, Sophie Determan, Roger Macfarlane

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The goal of my project was to assist Dr. Roger Macfarlane in developing the online index of the Oxford Guide to Classical Mythology in the Arts which will be centered at BYU. The OGCMA is an important and widely-used index that identifies 30,000+ artworks spanning from the 1300-1900s. But despite the breadth of the index, there is not a single example of a film mentioned in any entry. This is a serious gap in classical scholarship because no other guide contains significant film references. The scope of my project was to evaluate and contribute scholarly metadata for over forty films …

Using Writer’S Notebooks And Tutoring With Alternative High School Students, Alexis Cramer, Dawan Coombs Jun 2019

Using Writer’S Notebooks And Tutoring With Alternative High School Students, Alexis Cramer, Dawan Coombs

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I began this project with a goal to determine how I could help my at-risk students become more engaged in learning. Research encourages teachers to use relevant pedagogical tools to engage students. While I agree with that conclusion, I felt it was still too broad to be effective. My project helped narrow the conclusion to specific tools teachers can use and what they looked like with a specific population of students. I researched the effects of writer’s notebooks and service learning for at- risk high school student to see if the level of academic engagement, individual success and self-esteem would …

We Don’T Need Another Hero: Historiography And The Sophie Digital Library’S Science And Technology Collection, Michael Evans, Robert Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Sophie Digital Library is an online library and resource center for works produced by German-speaking women. These works are focused on the publications from pre- 17th century through the early 20th century. Unfortunately, the group of women in Germany living during this time faced many challenges and one of them was being underrepresented in historical works published from their research and achievements. The Sophie Digital Library consists of works produced by German-speaking women from this time frame that help to highlight their successes that have assisted in shaping the future for other women who strive to achieve something great. …

Pedagogical Compilation Of Arnold Jacob’S Master Classes, Samuel Craven, Steven Call Jun 2019

Pedagogical Compilation Of Arnold Jacob’S Master Classes, Samuel Craven, Steven Call

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The crowning achievement of my ORCA mentorship project was to have it submitted to the BYU School of Music library, where it is now both physically and digitally accessible for anyone to use. This project has been valuable to me in many ways, and I especially appreciate the chance it has given me to work with Dr. Call in a capacity that I would not otherwise have had. Despite some minor problems, I was able to finish the project on time and to my mentor’s and my own high standards. Overall, I consider this opportunity to have been extremely valuable …

Eye Movements In Second Language Reading Of Russian, Hunter Hill, Steven G. Luke, Phd, Jennifer M. Brown Jun 2019

Eye Movements In Second Language Reading Of Russian, Hunter Hill, Steven G. Luke, Phd, Jennifer M. Brown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When we read, our eye movements are influenced by our knowledge of the language we are reading. When reading in a second language in which we have less experience, it is likely that our under-developed language skills will have less influence over our eye movements. While eye movements in reading have been studied extensively, this research has been restricted almost exclusively to native speakers of the language being read. The purpose of this study is to investigate second language reading, describing differences between native and non-native reading and identifying those learned eye-movement behaviors that transfer from one language to another …

Multiculturalism: The Search Of Home Through Roots And Tentacles, Daniela Ferreira, Brian Christensen Jun 2019

Multiculturalism: The Search Of Home Through Roots And Tentacles, Daniela Ferreira, Brian Christensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When this project was conceived, my idea was to exhibit how juxtaposition of marine creatures and perennial plants would help further the discussion of multiculturalism and the idea of home. The project consisted of traveling to the Audubon Park in New Orleans to observe century old oaks known for their majestic roots, extensive size and elongated branches. Following this, I would travel to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, in California, to focus on their cephalopods in the Tentacles exhibition. In better understanding these forms I would draw from nature to better explain multiculturalism via paintings and/or ceramic works.

Societal Borderlands: Community Art Making As A Means To Turning Borders Into Points Of Interaction, Kindia Du Plessis Cutler, Daniel Barney, Pd.D. Jun 2019

Societal Borderlands: Community Art Making As A Means To Turning Borders Into Points Of Interaction, Kindia Du Plessis Cutler, Daniel Barney, Pd.D.

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Social practice is a growing area in art that is seeking to expand what art is through what it does. Artists working in this way are more interested in the interactions and situations they might create than the things they produce. This project was a social practice artwork that was made up of a community art group that facilitated the collaboration and interaction of neighbors in Provo, UT. For three years, I have been leading this project in the form of a community art class that invites parents, their children, and others from around the city to create individual and …

Japanese Grammar Tool And Database, John A. Dinkel, Steven Moody Jun 2019

Japanese Grammar Tool And Database, John A. Dinkel, Steven Moody

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Creating a useable database required a lot more work than I originally expected. While we completed a major part of the project, the creation of the database, the coding and formatting of the tool was simply beyond the scale we could handle. However, in our attempts to code and make our database useful to all levels of learners, we made something truly awesome. We have created the most expansive, popular Japanese grammar database on the internet for Japanese language learners. Eventually, we hope to be able to make this a mobile app and allow more people to search and understand …

The Birdcage As A Semiological Signifier For Submission In Ambrogio Lorenzetti’S Effects Of Good Government, Claralyn Burt, Elliott Wise Jun 2019

The Birdcage As A Semiological Signifier For Submission In Ambrogio Lorenzetti’S Effects Of Good Government, Claralyn Burt, Elliott Wise

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s fresco cycle, The Allegory of Good and Bad Government (1339), decorates the walls of the “Room of Peace” (Salla della Pace) in the municipal headquarters of the medieval, Tuscan city state of Siena. Traditionally celebrated for their secular subject matter, these frescos employ countless carefully crafted allegories and representations of virtues and vices used to inspire Siena’s civic rulers to govern justly. Our project brought to light the importance of one small but critical object: the solitary birdcage hanging above the classroom in the center of the Good Government fresco. We argued that through its representation of containment …

Italian Politicians And Racialized Language On Social Media: The Norming Effect On Racial Attitudes And Behaviors Towards Immigrants, Janessa Garrow, Marie Orton Jun 2019

Italian Politicians And Racialized Language On Social Media: The Norming Effect On Racial Attitudes And Behaviors Towards Immigrants, Janessa Garrow, Marie Orton

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Between 2002 and 2011, over 3.5 million non-citizens immigrated to Italy (International and internal migration, 2013). While there has been a decreasing trend in the number of incoming immigrants since the peak in 2007 (over 500,000), there were still over 119,000 migrants who came to Italy in 2017 (International and internal migration, 2013; International and internal migration, 2017; Operational Portal Refugee Situations, 2017). So far in 2018, over 18,000 immigrants have landed in Italy (Operational Portal Refugee Situations, 2018). Due to Italy’s geographic location in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, it is the first location to feel the waves …

Lebensborn Mothers: The Women Of The Thousand-Year Reich, Zachary Herzog, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Kelling Jun 2019

Lebensborn Mothers: The Women Of The Thousand-Year Reich, Zachary Herzog, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Kelling

Journal of Undergraduate Research

There have been few, if any, events during the 20th century that have drawn more interest from philosophers and historians than those leading up to and culminating in the Second World War. Consequently, much has been said already concerning the aims of the Third Reich. Yet, while there is an increasing amount of literature reflecting upon numerous aspects of the period, the literature surrounding the highly secretive Lebensborn (“Fount of Life”) organization remains somewhat thin. In fact, despite there being thousands of men, women, and children involved in the eugenics experiment, much of what is now known of the Lebensborn …

Linguistic Integration: A Comparison Of Spanish Speakers In Austria And Germany With Those In The U.S., Nicole Gomez Bravo, Laura Smith Jun 2019

Linguistic Integration: A Comparison Of Spanish Speakers In Austria And Germany With Those In The U.S., Nicole Gomez Bravo, Laura Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study examined factors influencing the linguistic and cultural integration of Spanish-speaking immigrants into the local language and culture. Immigration and the integration of recent immigrants is an increasingly polarizing topic worldwide, with many citizens complaining that new immigrants fail to learn the target language of their new home and refuse to integrate into local culture. Consequently, immigrants from some cultures often face discrimination or poor treatment. In the United States, immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America are one such group encountering well-publicized difficulties. Spanish-speaking immigrants are also on the rise in German-speaking countries such as Germany and Austria, …

Changing The Culture Of Public Transportation At Byu, Samantha Aramburu, Jamin Rowan Jun 2019

Changing The Culture Of Public Transportation At Byu, Samantha Aramburu, Jamin Rowan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Public transportation is an entity that is fast-growing in the state of Utah. While the Utah population is generally dependent on their cars, there are growing amounts of people that rely on public transportation to get where they need to go. There are several different transit systems that are available for Utahns that serve the differing and fluctuating needs of individuals within the population. Among these are a commuter train (FrontRunner) that connects three different counties across the Wasatch Front, a light-rail system (TRAX) with three different lines that run through Salt Lake County, several different bus routes, ski buses …

Young Guns: Lasting Changes In Communities As A Result Of Gun Violence, Louisa Ballif, Eric Gillett Jun 2019

Young Guns: Lasting Changes In Communities As A Result Of Gun Violence, Louisa Ballif, Eric Gillett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

On the subject of gun violence, the United States ranks high above any other country in frequency and fatality. In reaction to these violences, there are usually massive outpourings of support, concern, etc. However, with the rapidity of the current news climate, these events are lost quickly and all but forgotten at times. This project is in part a reaction to the brevity with which these events are covered. The purpose of this project is also to explore the longer lasting effects of mass shootings within the physical space of the violence and the distance with which most of the …

Early Orientalist Sentiments In Dutch Baroque Still Life Paintings: A Study Of Harmen Steenwyck, Maika Bahr, Martha Peacock Jun 2019

Early Orientalist Sentiments In Dutch Baroque Still Life Paintings: A Study Of Harmen Steenwyck, Maika Bahr, Martha Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The relationship between the Dutch Republic and Japan during the seventeenth century provoked early Orientalist feelings that were manifested in still-life paintings. Harmen Steenwyck’s Still Life: An Allegory of the Vanitas of Human Life from 1640, depicts an intricate, Japanese sword at the center of a still-life table scene surrounded by objects that allude to the theme of vanitas, like the yellowed skull and pocket watch, and other objects that signify the romanticized Orient, like the supple fuchsia-colored silk and sparkling seashell (Fig. 1). Although still-life paintings are usually decoded with an emphasis on the theme of vanitas, I chose …

Family Foundation Of Faith Mentoring Environment Grant (2015-2016):, Dr. Justin Dyer, Dr. Michael Goodman, Dr. Mark Ogletree

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The project met several academic objectives. The first was to collect the initial round of data for the Family Foundations of Faith project. Data were collected from over 600 families and were cleaned and prepared for use. With students, three paper proposals were created and accepted to the 2017 National Council on Family Relations conference. These papers will also be submitted to academic journals for publication. Given the extensiveness of the data, they will be mined for years to come, answering critical questions about youth faith development. In sum, the academic objectives of the project have been realized.

Siena And The Other: Looking At The Tenshō Embassy In Siena, Lydia Breksa, Eric Dursteler Sep 2018

Siena And The Other: Looking At The Tenshō Embassy In Siena, Lydia Breksa, Eric Dursteler

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the early modern period in Italy (1400s-1700s), nobles and organizations (e.g., guilds, oligarchies etc.) established a pattern of using artwork to demonstrate their power, standing in society, and relevance to current events. The exchange of diplomatic visitors, known as embassies, was common at this time and interactions with these dignitaries from other states in Europe, are examples of events recorded in the form of art or literature. Interactions with unusual visitors, such as moor slaves, were also recorded. While the pattern of recording interactions in the form of art and literature was pervasive, it was curiously lacking for the …

Examples Of Egyptian Iconography Of Late Bronze Age Canaan, Amanda Buessecker, Jeff Chadwick Sep 2018

Examples Of Egyptian Iconography Of Late Bronze Age Canaan, Amanda Buessecker, Jeff Chadwick

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The globalized Late Bronze Age world was one of sophisticated trade, conquest, and foreign influence in many of the Old World’s nations. Archaeological excavations in modern Israel have revealed numerous artifacts of Egyptian origin and style within Canaan’s Late Bronze Age. The Late Bronze Age in Canaan encompasses the 18th through 20th dynasties in Egypt, and evidence of Egyptian control in Canaan is manifest throughout the reigns of Tutmoses III, Amenophis III, Akhenaten, Ramses II, and Ramses III. Egyptian administrative centres have been recorded at Megiddo, Beth Shean, Jaffa, and Deir el-Balah. My intent was to determine the nature of …

Postmodern And Early Modern Theology: Derrida Meets Calderón The Derridean Parergon And Painting Theory In Calderón’S El Pintor De Su Deshonra, Camilo Mejia, Matthew Ancell, Phd. Sep 2018

Postmodern And Early Modern Theology: Derrida Meets Calderón The Derridean Parergon And Painting Theory In Calderón’S El Pintor De Su Deshonra, Camilo Mejia, Matthew Ancell, Phd.

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Simone Heller-Andrist’s The Friction of the Frame ingeniously employs the Derridean parergon as a methodological approach to analyze the mechanisms involved in the reading process. In The Truth in Painting, Derrida uses the term parergon in the context of a frame in a painting. The parergon is the frame of a painting and a part of the work that is commonly disregarded but influences and manipulates the interpretation of the work. Hence the parergon presents an interaction between the canvas of a painting, and its surroundings. It is neither purely inside nor outside, but it performs and operation that acknowledges …

Oral Fluency Through Writing, Janae Campbell, Stephen J. Moody Sep 2018

Oral Fluency Through Writing, Janae Campbell, Stephen J. Moody

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Learning a second language is difficult. While learning, writing and speaking are treated as though they are two totally separate things. It is evident that people do not speak the same way they write, but that does not mean that speaking and writing should be divided. What if it was possible to create written assignments that would help increase the oral fluency of the learner? This would make home-work assignments more efficient by optimizing how students use their time studying at home. It would take away the pressure of having to learn all verbal communications within the confines of the …

Investigating The Black Hours: Finding Deeper Significance, Caroline Ferrell, Dr. Elliott Wise Sep 2018

Investigating The Black Hours: Finding Deeper Significance, Caroline Ferrell, Dr. Elliott Wise

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Created around 1470, the Morgan Black Hours (MS M.493) is part of a rare group of manuscripts with black pages, gold lettering, and luminous miniatures painted in blue, green, and pink (see Fig. 1). My initial paper, which led me to this project, examined the way this unique and enigmatic color scheme contributes to the spiritual argument of the prayer book.

Telling The Story Of A Forgotten Martyr: Step One, Caleb Deppermann, Stephen Bay Sep 2018

Telling The Story Of A Forgotten Martyr: Step One, Caleb Deppermann, Stephen Bay

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of the our research was to establish the date of the authorship of the ancient martyrdom Passio Sanctorum Adriani et Nataliae. This text is an early Christian martyrdom account that was widely read in antiquity and in the middle ages. The two martyrs featured in the text, Adrian and Natalie, were canonized in both the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Christian communities and the text was widely represented in medieval art. Regrettably, however, the text has received almost no scholarly attention in the modern era. This is especially unfortunate because the text is a fascinating literary document in …

A Look At Peruvian Theater: A Translation Of And Reflection On No Hay Isla Feliz, Rachel Draut, Marlene Esplin Sep 2018

A Look At Peruvian Theater: A Translation Of And Reflection On No Hay Isla Feliz, Rachel Draut, Marlene Esplin

Journal of Undergraduate Research

No hay isla feliz (1954) is a significant part of Sebastián Salazar Bondy’s repertoire and a valuable work of Latin American literature that deserves to be known to the English-speaking world. The play’s author was one of most influential Peruvian authors of his time and a North American audience would benefit from getting to know his brilliance. I was instantly intrigued by No hay isla feliz , with a captivating plot full of social commentary about modern Peruvian life and compellingly tragic characters. However, I found that this play had not gotten much attention: it had neither been translated into …
