The Darker Side Of Americas Wonderland A Study Of The First Four Decades Of Yellowstone National Park, Elizabeth M. Sargent Jun 2011

The Darker Side Of Americas Wonderland A Study Of The First Four Decades Of Yellowstone National Park, Elizabeth M. Sargent

Honors Theses

Those who first stumbled across the steaming, bubbling land of Northwestern Wyoming in 1860s and early 1870s described it as “Hell on Earth.” Over the course of a few decades, the land underwent a vast transformation, which replaced “Hell” with “Wonderland” in visitors’ minds. The year 1872 represents a turning point in environmental legislation and marks the conception of Yellowstone, America’s first national park. While creating a national park preserved, for the first time, the country’s natural wonders, the 1872 act included no direction for management, no allocation of funds for upkeep, and no system set in place to manage …

Robots Are People Too: Posthumanism In Battlestar Galactica, Rebecca Seel Jun 2011

Robots Are People Too: Posthumanism In Battlestar Galactica, Rebecca Seel

Honors Theses

The science fiction television series Battlestar Galactica explores the differences between human and machine and the nature of identity. It expresses both our fascination with machines and our technophobia. In a society of explosive technological advances come technological anxieties. What will happen when we create life? As BSG posits, with autonomous machines come destruction and a new race of people who, not unlike us, are trying to define who they are. As the series progresses, an overarching question emerges: what is a "person"? Is personage determined by biology or by decision? Can machines have souls? This thesis approaches BSG through …

Rediscovering Prigg V. Pennsylvania, Andrew J. Trochanowski Jun 2011

Rediscovering Prigg V. Pennsylvania, Andrew J. Trochanowski

Honors Theses

The concept of federalism serves as the foundation for the American political system. The framers laid a foundation for balancing state and national tensions; and during the antebellum era American political actors wrestled with the proper application of these concepts. This paper traces the evolution of federalist principles beginning at the founding and culminating with the commonly misperceived Supreme Court case Prigg v. Pennsylvania by analyzing transformative historical moments and political regimes. Prigg v. Pennsylvania currently exists within contemporary political and constitutional scholarly literature as a slavery case decided upon moralistic bias and the Court’s commitment to the institution of …

Evolution Of Flow In Games, Paul J. Tunison Jun 2011

Evolution Of Flow In Games, Paul J. Tunison

Honors Theses

Every one wants to play a fun game, but ”fun” is a subjective quality. Flow, a psychological theory to define what ”fun” is, states that, for an activity to be considered fun, the chal-lenge it presents must correlate with that participant’s abilities such that the activity is neither too easy or too difficult. One of the biggest problems for game designers is balancing the difficulty of its content in such a way that it appeals to the largest audience possible. In order to broaden audiences, de-velopers need to invest effort into creating numerous, discrete balances that are aligned to varying …

Lyndon Johnson: A Psychological Character Study, Stephanie L. Vacchio Jun 2011

Lyndon Johnson: A Psychological Character Study, Stephanie L. Vacchio

Honors Theses

This thesis centers on Lyndon Johnson and his character traits and how they are translated into his leadership abilities. The ways in which he handled issues as president, his personal relationships with others, and his own personality traits all define who Johnson was as a man. These aspects combined can be viewed as “character”, or the result of the environment someone has been exposed to for a prolonged period of time. In the case of Johnson, it is his childhood that has played the largest role in shaping his character and in turn his personality. My thesis explores the psychological …

Las Malinches De Laura Esquivel Y De Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda: Una Reexaminación De La Malinche Y La Política Sexual En Estos Textos Modernos, Elizabeth R. Ackley Jun 2011

Las Malinches De Laura Esquivel Y De Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda: Una Reexaminación De La Malinche Y La Política Sexual En Estos Textos Modernos, Elizabeth R. Ackley

Honors Theses

One of the first women to appear in Mexican post-Hispanic history is La Malinche, the indigenous "language" of the Spanish conquistador, Hernán Cortés. Historically, Mexicans have associated La Malinche with betrayal because it helped Europeans at least with translation during the conquest of Mexico. In addition, over time, she has become a symbol of both motherhood and the tempting woman in whose hands lies the destruction of Mexico. Although there is not much historical information about this important woman in physical texts, a symbolic image of her has been developed on a large scale in Mexican culture through social institutions. …

The Political Properties: Pro- And Anti-Augustan Readings Of Propertius Book Four, Matthew Angelosanto Jun 2011

The Political Properties: Pro- And Anti-Augustan Readings Of Propertius Book Four, Matthew Angelosanto

Honors Theses

Propertius was a Roman elegist writing during the early years of Augustus’ reign as emperor. His fourth and final book of elegies has long confounded scholars due to its drastic shift in subject matter from love elegy to aetiology. So, too, did the poet’s political stance seem to change: vehemently anti-Augustus in his earlier books, a number of poems in his fourth seem to extol both the sociopolitical climate of Augustan Rome as well as the emperor himself. But should we take the poet’s words at face value? In light of his inexplicable change in political allegiance, this thesis examines …

Women Against Dictatorship And Repression: A Comparative Study Of The Women’S Organizations Formed In Chile And Argentina Respectively Between 1973-1990 And 1976-1983, Ariana L. Awad Jun 2011

Women Against Dictatorship And Repression: A Comparative Study Of The Women’S Organizations Formed In Chile And Argentina Respectively Between 1973-1990 And 1976-1983, Ariana L. Awad

Honors Theses

This project is a comparative case study between the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo in Argentina who formed during the dictatorship of the military junta from 1976 to 1983 and the groups of women that formed organizations in Chile under Pinochet beginning in 1973. The thesis looks at the roles of specific institutions, such as their respective governments, the United States and the Catholic Church and how they differed in each country. The thesis not only examines the institutional influences on the movements but also how both of their coalitions’ outcomes were influenced by historical factors. At first glance, …

La Formulación De Una Identidad Mexicana Fronteriza En La Frontera De Cristal: Un Proceso De Reconciliación, Alexander W. Brockwehl Jun 2011

La Formulación De Una Identidad Mexicana Fronteriza En La Frontera De Cristal: Un Proceso De Reconciliación, Alexander W. Brockwehl

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the concept of Mexican identity on the border between Mexico and the United States. The essay focuses on two stories by Carlos Fuentes - "La capitalina" and "La frontera de cristal" - but also considers the theory of Mary Pat Brady, Gloria Anzaldúa, Pablo Vila, and some other theorists to understand and better articulate the message of Sources. Important to the concepts that are discussed in the essay is the phenomenon of globalization and its role in motivating relations between the two countries. The main argument of the essay consists of two parts. The first focuses on …

The Music Industry And The Internet: The Effects Of Online Social Networking Sites On Record Labels And Aspiring Artists, Carolyn S. Canetti Jun 2011

The Music Industry And The Internet: The Effects Of Online Social Networking Sites On Record Labels And Aspiring Artists, Carolyn S. Canetti

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the ways that the Internet’s social networking sites have affected the music industry and aspiring artists. In the past ten years there has been an upsurge in the use and importance of social networking sites such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. This revolution in social connection has yielded drastic changes in the ways both labels and musicians share and search for music. I had internships with Universal Music Group and Smithsonian Folkways in their online marketing department and was able to study first hand the way record labels utilize social networking sites to benefit their artists. I …

Coco Chanel : De La Rue À La Haute Couture – Adaptant La Nouvelle Femme, Shannon R. Funkhouser Jun 2011

Coco Chanel : De La Rue À La Haute Couture – Adaptant La Nouvelle Femme, Shannon R. Funkhouser

Honors Theses

The current project sought to analyze the life and work of the designer Coco Chanel. Through investigation into her life course, values, contributions to art, theater, dance, fashion, and women’s rights, it is argued that Chanel embodied the time period in which she lived ; she both influenced, and was influenced by the cultural forces that predominated. Particular attention is paid to the time periods following World War I and World War II, two events that drastically changed artistic aesthetics, social norms, and life values. The post-war eras provided the fuel for the women’s liberation movement, ushering in the idea …

Reconstructing The Concept Of Terrorism After 9/11: The Case Of Farc-Ep In Colombia, Leland Garivaltis Jun 2011

Reconstructing The Concept Of Terrorism After 9/11: The Case Of Farc-Ep In Colombia, Leland Garivaltis

Honors Theses

Las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia- Ejército del Pueblo (FARC-EP) is a Marxist-Leninist guerrilla group that formed in the rural sections of Colombia in 1966. The guerilla group has claimed to fight for the marginalized Colombian. Because this insurgent group disrupts the status quo, more recent hardliner governments of Colombia and the United States have vilified the organization publicly to denounce the legitimacy and goals of the Leftist guerillas as well as labeled them terrorists and narco-terrorists. This thesis provides analysis and research to negate the comparison between the rural guerilla fighters and terrorist organizations, while it also provides evidence …

Analyzing The Parallelism Between The Rise And Fall Of Baseball In Quebec And The Quebec Secession Movement, Daniel S. Greene Jun 2011

Analyzing The Parallelism Between The Rise And Fall Of Baseball In Quebec And The Quebec Secession Movement, Daniel S. Greene

Honors Theses

My Senior Project examines the parallelism between the movement to bring baseball to Quebec and the Quebec secession movement in Canada. Through my research I have found that both entities follow a very similar timeline with highs and lows coming around the same time in the same province; although, I have not found any direct linkage between the two. My analysis begins around 1837 and continues through present day, and by analyzing the histories of each movement demonstrates clearly that both movements followed a unique and similar timeline. The project is separated into six chapters, each containing three parts, including …

Le Moi Double: Les Inconscients (Post)Coloniaux Chez Césaire Et Breton, Emma A. Krosschell Jun 2011

Le Moi Double: Les Inconscients (Post)Coloniaux Chez Césaire Et Breton, Emma A. Krosschell

Honors Theses

This thesis analyzes the poetic works of two French-speaking surrealist poets of the twentieth century, Aimé Césaire and André Breton. Despite their common point of surrealism, Césaire and Breton's poems differ because of their identities in a society afflicted by Western colonization. Using the literary theories of postcolonialism as a perspective for the analysis of Breton and Césaire's poems, I show that both men have a double consciousness based on the complicated influence of a colonizing society. Literary criticism of postcolonialism examines individual identities in colonial societies in relation to their symbolic position as "colonist" or "colonized." Césaire, a Martinican …

After The Studio: The Politcal Influence Of Visual Imagery, Katherine A. Macewan Jun 2011

After The Studio: The Politcal Influence Of Visual Imagery, Katherine A. Macewan

Honors Theses

Seeking to understand the role of art outside the studio, this paper examines the political effects of visual art in public space. With four artists serving as case studies, the paper interprets these artists’ work using the text of a political theorist to understand both how the public absorbs their pieces and what importance this process has. Fist, using political theorist Hannah Arendt to examine the work of the graffiti artist Banksy, the paper explores the relevance of artist’s intention to the public understanding of an image. Moving to socially conscious photographer Aaron Huey paired with author Susan Sontag, the …

A Lost Land: The Jewish Experience In The Catskills, Briana H. Mark Jun 2011

A Lost Land: The Jewish Experience In The Catskills, Briana H. Mark

Honors Theses

By the early twentieth century, the fruitful farmlands of Sullivan and Ulster Counties became home to hundreds of hotels and bungalow colonies that served the Jews of New York City. Yet these hotels were unlike most in America, for they not only represented an escape from the confines of the ghetto of the Lower East Side, but they also retained a distinct religious nature. The Jewish dietary laws were followed in most of the colonies and resorts, and religious services were also a part of daily life. It was within this cultural context that a summer haven was created in …

The Girl In The Postfeminist World: Rethinking The Impact Of Chick-Lit Fiction, Sarah T. O'Connor Jun 2011

The Girl In The Postfeminist World: Rethinking The Impact Of Chick-Lit Fiction, Sarah T. O'Connor

Honors Theses

This thesis discusses “chick-lit” series in relation to popular culture, adolescent development, and feminist theory. The role of the female in the United States is currently dominated by both neo-liberal and conservative postfeminist ideology. Postfeminism advocates female empowerment via consumption, sexual attractiveness and physical beauty, while at the same time valorizing passive femininity and the roles of wife and mother. Chick-lit fiction provides a means by which postfeminist messages can be examined as they are presented to adolescent girl audiences, and reveals that the influence of this discourse over female subjectivity is inherently patriarchal. As a genre, chick lit is …

Une Approche Lourde Ou Légère? : Les Habitudes Alimentaires Malsaines Et La Proposition Du Valérie Boyer Contre Le Niveau Maigre, Eva M. Pogosian Jun 2011

Une Approche Lourde Ou Légère? : Les Habitudes Alimentaires Malsaines Et La Proposition Du Valérie Boyer Contre Le Niveau Maigre, Eva M. Pogosian

Honors Theses

It's no secret that in today's society, one of the main concerns among women is the way they look. Although society tells us from a young age that "inside that counts", women, and now even young girls as five have a concern about their appearance. Society tells us to be happy with who we are and to be true to ourselves, but in fact we want to please the world. Where does this worry come from? And maybe this question is more important. Why is we consider thinness as the ideal of beauty. It was only 60 years ago that …

Kwame Nkrumah And The Making Of National Identity In Ghana, Amanda B. Powers Jun 2011

Kwame Nkrumah And The Making Of National Identity In Ghana, Amanda B. Powers

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the role of national identity in the development of modern Ghana. It uses secondary and primary sources in order to determine the role that political identity, ethnicity, religion, and Pan-Africanism played in nation-building following independence. In exploring the making of the Ghanaian state in the post-colonial period, this thesis argues that political identity and its growth during this time was central. More specifically, the focus of this thesis is the relationship between Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana, and the various bases of political identity. In the 1960s Nkrumah attempted to implement a socialist state, and …

If You Label It This Then It Cant Be That: Revisiting New Journalism In Mailer, Didion, And Wolfe, Jill E. Radwin Jun 2011

If You Label It This Then It Cant Be That: Revisiting New Journalism In Mailer, Didion, And Wolfe, Jill E. Radwin

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the works of Norman Mailer, Joan Didion, and Tom Wolfe, a group of writers most often defined as the “New Journalists” for their untraditional blending of fictional techniques with reportage. I refer primarily to three texts: Mailer’s The Armies of the Night, Didion’s The White Album, and Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, and then go on to analyze the authors’ later careers through a study of their more recent essays and essay collections. I examine the ways in which these three authors break conventions of traditional journalism, most notably through their rejection of ethical boundaries, the …

The Impacts Of Terror Management And Self-Monitoring On Religiosity, Caitlin M. Silvia Jun 2011

The Impacts Of Terror Management And Self-Monitoring On Religiosity, Caitlin M. Silvia

Honors Theses

Previous research has shown that the cultural worldview a person holds has an impact on his or her attitudes and behaviors throughout life. Terror management theory posits that this worldview functions as a cultural anxiety-buffer from the overwhelming anxiety and terror that results from a person becoming aware of his or her own mortality. In particular, terror management theory suggests that there is a master motive behind religion, and that when placed in a mortality salience condition, a person’s beliefs and worldview will strengthen. Another personality variable that requires a strong worldview or framework is self-monitoring, which allows a person …

Fashion And Cosmetic Advertising In Three Magazines In The 1950s: How Advertising Shaped Societal Expectations Of Beauty, Lindsey B. Sloan Jun 2011

Fashion And Cosmetic Advertising In Three Magazines In The 1950s: How Advertising Shaped Societal Expectations Of Beauty, Lindsey B. Sloan

Honors Theses

Since its creation, print advertising has affected how women perceive beauty and has shaped the trend of consumer purchasing, as well as the social status of women. This thesis analyzes three women’s magazines—Life, Ladies’ Home Journal and Ebony and evaluates how the advertising of fashion and cosmetics portrayed ideals of beauty in the 1950s and how the advertisements may have shaped or reflected class differences and racial perceptions in mid 19th century America. In order to accomplish this analysis and to evaluate how fashion and cosmetic advertising may have differed based on targeted demographic, advertisements from the months April and …

Hijos, Muerte Y La Histeria Femenina: La Historia De La Malinche A Través De Dos Representaciones De La Llorona En El Cine Mexicano, Aria D. Walfrand Jun 2011

Hijos, Muerte Y La Histeria Femenina: La Historia De La Malinche A Través De Dos Representaciones De La Llorona En El Cine Mexicano, Aria D. Walfrand

Honors Theses

This thesis is an exploration of two very famous Mexican legend figures, La Malinche and La Llorona, and the connection between women through two films: La Llorona (1960) and Las Lloronas (2003). These films, although they are about the myth of La Llorona, have very strong connections to La Malinche. These connections are based on the representation of them in the film and the themes of the children's background, the hysteria, and the effect that La Llorona's curse has on future generations. First, information is given on the history of La Malinche. There is not much concrete information about her …

The Family And Medical Leave Act: Effects On Women's Wages And Employment, Andrea E. Miller Jun 2011

The Family And Medical Leave Act: Effects On Women's Wages And Employment, Andrea E. Miller

Honors Theses

For many years, women's labor force participation and issues of parental leave have been of great importance not only to families and individuals, but also to policy makers, researchers, and employers alike. The Family and Medical Leave Act was the first federal policy enacted in an effort to accommodate medical leave for employees. The Family and Medical Leave Act allowed both men and women to take extended, unpaid leaves due to personal or family medical and health issues. The FMLA establishes a federal, minimum leave threshold in order for employees to take such an extended leave to include the following …

Schenectadys New Deal: The Wpa In The City Of Schenectady, Scott F. Power Jun 2011

Schenectadys New Deal: The Wpa In The City Of Schenectady, Scott F. Power

Honors Theses

When President Roosevelt assumed office in March of 1933, he faced an unemployment rate of twenty-five percent, homelessness, and the malaise of a nation stuck in a deepening state of poverty. His solution, aimed at alleviating the circumstances resulting from the Great Depression, was to institute a series of economic programs known as the “New Deal.” Roosevelt proposed the creation of a variety of social welfare programs, including “work relief” that would provide government jobs for the unemployed. The best known program was the Works Progress Administration, or simply, the WPA, created in 1935. Through projects ranging from building roads …

Imperial Infringement Or Self-Destruction? The Demise Of The Caribbean's Black Power Socialist Experiment, Georgia E. Swan-Ambrose Jun 2011

Imperial Infringement Or Self-Destruction? The Demise Of The Caribbean's Black Power Socialist Experiment, Georgia E. Swan-Ambrose

Honors Theses

The Caribbean’s experimentation with Black Power and socialism was the highest expression of its self-emancipation and self-definition. This thesis explores the reasons why this experiment, the dawning of a new day as it freed the masses from the grips of colonial constraints, was suppressed. It deconstructs which factor had a greater impact on the failure of the Caribbean’s nation-building process, internal strife and contradictions, or U.S. imperialistic hegemonic greed. Beginning with the exploration of intellectual and inspirational rhetoric of freedom, equality and black liberation, these ideological thinkers inspired the Caribbean to fight for independence. A case study evaluating four Caribbean …

The Lunar Society Of Birmingham And The Practice Of Science In 18th Century Great Britain, Scott H. Zurawel Jun 2011

The Lunar Society Of Birmingham And The Practice Of Science In 18th Century Great Britain, Scott H. Zurawel

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the scientific and technological advancements facilitated by members of the Lunar Society of Birmingham in eighteenth-century Britain. The study relies on a number of primary sources, which range from the regular correspondence of its members to their various published scientific works. The secondary sources used for this project range from comprehensive books about the society as a whole to sources concentrating on particular members. The Lunar Society comprised only fourteen members throughout its existence, but for the purposes of this study, three of them were analyzed: Joseph Priestley, James Watt and William Withering. These three individuals played …
