The Bureau of Labor Education (BLE) at the University of Maine is a state-funded department of research and advocacy for Maine laborers and their issues. First established in 1966 by the Maine Legislature, the original aim of the Bureau was to foster education about the history and current issues of labor in today's techno-capitalist society, as well as advocate on behalf of labor. The Bureau teaches courses in Labor studies, contributes to and facilitates publications in labor studies and economics, and has retained robust relationships with some of Maine's most important labor allies, like Maine AFL-CIO. Irvin "Buzz" Caverly, Jr. began working at Baxter State Park in 1960 as Park Ranger I immediately after graduating from Lee Academy in Lee, Maine. In 1982, 22 years after first being hired as a ranger, Caverly was selected to be the Baxter State Park Director, a position he would remain in until his retirement in 2005. Caverly remained active with the park, accepting an appointment from Governor Baldacci in 2007 to serve as the Baxter Park Wilderness Trust Fund Commissioner.

Collection, (1917-2023) includes papers, personal correspondence, and publications regarding former Governor Percival P. Baxter (1876-1969) and Baxter State Park. …

William S. Cohen was born on August 28, 1940 in Bangor, Maine. His father Reuben, a baker, was a Russian-Jewish immigrant and his mother, Clara, is of Irish-Protestant extraction. Cohen graduated from Bangor High School in 1958, and from Bowdoin College with an A.B. cum laude in Latin in 1962. An accomplished athlete, he was named to the Maine all-state high school and college basketball teams, and, while at Bowdoin, he was inducted into the New England All-Star Hall of Fame. This collection consists of personal and professional correspondence primarily addressed to Clyde M. Reed from various political figures.

Clyde Martin Reed was born on October 19, 1871 in Illinois. His family moved to Kansas when he was four years old. He married Minnie E. Hart in 1891 and they had ten children. In 1919, Reed became the personal secretary of Kansas Governor Henry J. Allen. In 1929, Reed was elected the 24^th Governor of Kansas and served until 1931. Reed also served as a Kansas Senator from 1939-1949. He died on November 8^th, 1949.

He received an M.Ed. in 1956 and an M.A. in history and government in 1958 from the University of Maine. He received a Ph.D. in history in 1965 from Cornell University. He taught five years at Hobart and William Smith College, Geneva, N.Y., then returned to teach at the University of Maine. In 1965 he joined the University of Maine history faculty. The Pittsburg Bicentennial-Centennial was the celebration of the 200^th anniversary of the United States and the 100^th anniversary of the city of Pittsburg, Kansas in 1976. The celebration was spearheaded by Edward T. McNally of McNally Pittsburg Manufacturing Corporation. He said the objective was “to celebrate our past in a unique town and instill a sense of pride in the past and the present.” A feature of the Centennial celebration was the Pittsburg Hall of Fame. Carthage, Missouri was platted in 1842 when it was chosen as the county seat for Jasper County, formed in 1841. By the Civil War, the town had 500 residents and many businesses. John W. Stalker was born in 1868. He was the Justice of the Peace in Girard, Kansas between 1935 and 1949. In 1892 he married Rena E. Myers in Crawford County. They had six children. John Stalker also worked independently as an insurance agent for Stalker’s Realty, “the Preferred Fire Insurance Co.” He passed away in 1959 in Girard.

Doris Rachel (Gibson) Schlacks, born in 1932, grew up in Pittsburg, Kansas. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Monmouth College in Illinois. She and William H. Schlacks were married in 1954, but later divorced. Doris lived in Houston, Texas for 25 years before moving back to Pittsburg. She was a member of many organizations like Kappa Kappa Gamma and the PEO Sisterhood. Doris passed away in 2009. The family documents belonged to Doris’ great-grandfather Archibald “Archie” Burns (1836-1921). …

The pottery business in Pittsburg began in 1888 when a smelting company provided a section for stonemasonry. In 1913, this section became independent and was named the Pittsburg Clay Works. Originally owned by A. K. and E. V. Lanyon, the company was bought by a group of people, including Henry Matarazzi, in 1925. Matarazzi gained complete ownership in 1944 and the name changed to the Pittsburg Pottery Company. Matarazzi passed the business on to his son in 1952 who sold it …

David White Trafford was born in Blaine, Maine, in 1916. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1939 and received MA and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University. He joined University of Maine faculty teaching history and was appointed chair of the University of Maine Study Abroad Program in 1965.

Trafford was affiliated with the Institute of American Studies Abroad, serving as an honorary fellow of the Institute, vice president for admissions and, during the early 1980s, as director of the Institute-Affiliated British Studies Centre in Kent, England. He retired from UMaine in 1979 and died in Florida in 1993. …

This research was undertaken in the mid-1970s by Anthony M. (Tony) Kaliss to provide supporting data for use as a part of the land claims suit by the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot Tribes. The suit has long been settled and the tribes were federally recognized. Both tribes had been recognized and dealt with continuously since at least the 1700s first by the Massachusetts colony, then by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a state and then the State of Maine when it separated from Massachusetts in 1820. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and his doctorate from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He was a professor of political science, specializing in international relations at the University of Maine in Orono. He authored the book, Decision of Destiny, a Political Analysis of the Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb.
