Working For And With Latino/Latina Immigrant Newcomers In The English Language Arts Classroom, Bernadette Musetti, Spencer Salas, Theresa Perez

The article discusses how the English language arts practitioners work with the Latin immigrants who are newcomers in learning English language in middle and high school in the U.S. Accordingly, practitioners provide more instructional time to contextualized learning and literacy on first and second language and advocate them to attain a high level of literacy. Moreover, it states that the literacy development of the newcomers must be anchored in patience, flexibility and conscientiousness.

The author discusses "chiaroscuro," which refers to the balance of brilliance and warmth in the timbre of the singing voice. He offers exercises and approaches to help singers discover and foster optimal resonance in their voices. Resonance is explained, techniques for recognizing optimal "chiaroscuro" are shared, and methods of digital palpitation of the buccal and laryngeal regions to tune the resonance tract are detailed.

This essay examines the cultural and promotional production of the individual story in Vienna's self-marketing to the contemporary tourist. The author argues that, in presenting the city's attractions, Vienna's tourist board has shifted its focus from history to a form of memory based on Pierre Nora's concept of the lieu de mémoire.

Making History In The Bedroom: Americo-Liberians And Indigenous Liberians Sexual Unions, 1880s- C. 1950s, William E. Allen

The article discusses sexual unions between black American settlers and majority indigenes in Liberia. According to the author, these unions forged political alliances between indigenous Liberians and Americo-Liberians, furthered the so-called civilizing mission of the colony, and created space for social mobility. Details related to the different groups living in the region, including indigenous Africans, recaptives who had been taken off illegal slaving vessels and resettled in Liberia, and free and formerly enslaved blacks from the U.S., are presented. Other topics include Christianity, polygamy, and illegitimate children.

For a century, Citizens & Southern Bank was a fixture in Georgia. In 1991, the C&S brand name disappeared in a merger with North Carolina National Bank. This was one of the bittersweet consequences of the slow, confusing swirl of bank deregulation after 1970, when institutions such as C&S simply disappeared, swallowed by the "winners" in the new competitive environment of interstate banking in the 1980s and 1990s. Pets In Print Advertising - Are We Seeing More Of Rover And Fluffy? A Content Analysis Of Four Popular Magazines, Charles M. Mayo, Donna T. Mayo, Marilyn M. Helms

This content analysis of advertising in four popular magazines investigates whether the role of pets-specifically dogs and cats-has changed as they have grown in popularity and power in American culture. Analysis of print advertisements from 1994 and 2004 suggests that although the frequency with which household pets appear in print advertisements has declined slightly, portrayals of "Rover" and "Fluffy" have changed to reflect society's growing fascination with and devotion to our furry family members.
