Accountability As A Key Virtue In Mental Health And Human Flourishing, John R. Peteet, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, C. Stephen Evans

We propose that accountability plays an implicit, important, and relatively unexamined role in psychiatry. People generally think of accountability as a relation in which one party is held accountable by another. In this paper, we examine accountability as a virtue, drawing on philosophy, psychiatry, and psychology to examine what it means to welcome being accountable in an excellent way that promotes flourishing. When people manifest accountability as a virtue, they are both responsive to others they owe a response, and they are responsible for their attitudes and actions in light of these relationships. Psychiatric treatment often aims to correct disordered …

Jewish Eschatology And Early Islamic History, Kenneth Atkinson
Jewish Eschatology And Early Islamic History, Kenneth Atkinson
Faculty Publications
The arrival of the first Muslims in Palestine had profound effects for the country’s Jewish population. The decline of Christian rule, and the appearance of a new religion by a monotheistic prophet from Arabia, initially led to close relations among the country’s Jews and first Muslims. Many Jews sought to explain the ministry of Muhammad (ca. 610- 632 C.E.) through eschatology and viewed his message as a sign that the end of days was near. Muslims, moreover, initially held a similar theological understanding of the eschaton, which may have been influenced by their contacts with Jews. The Islamic reverence for …

Refugees From War: Interviews With Elsa And Max Siegmund, Richard Hacken, Marianne Siegmund
Faculty Publications
In 1987, Marianne Siegmund interviewed her parents (Elsa and Max Siegmund) about their lives, which included her own life experiences as well. The family members are of Transylvanian Saxon origins, coming from a minority German-speaking group that has lived in Transylvania (within Hungary and Romania) since the early Middle Ages. This family saga extends in time from World War One through the 1950s and beyond. (The interviews do not necessarily follow chronologically, however.) The family history begins in Székelyudvarhely, a town in Transylvania that has been divided and redivided between Hungary and Romania a number of times. Because of both …

For over fifty years, Roman Catholics who are interreligious leaders have been guided by the Second Vatican Council document, Nostra Aetate. The author, a retired university lay minister in the United States, was one such interreligious leader who worked with students, faculty, and staff of all faiths and none on a small Catholic campus to create an atmosphere open to diversity, inclusion, and respect for all. Her office facilitated campus programs that encouraged service, dialogue, and spiritual growth. In twenty years, campus ministry involvement grew from three dozen primarily Catholic students to over 400 students of many different faiths. …

Discursive Incarceration: Black Fragility In A Divided Public Sphere, Meili Steele
Faculty Publications
The expression of fragility has always been a difficult and complex matter for African Americans, for the discourse of mainstream media is set up to both sustain and misrecognize their fragility . Even though the black public sphere split off from the dominant public sphere after the Civil War to enable distinctive forms of expression, the “practiced habits” of which Coates speaks continued working within the structures of the dominant discourse. My essay will analyze the structure of America’s indifference to fragility in six parts. In the first section, I will introduce a normative problematic that can track how the …

A Three-Story Approach To Teaching Scripture, Scott R. Ward

As we interact with youmg people, we must remember that as Christian educators, our primary goal is to help them find their place in the story of God. We must show them where they appear and how choosing Jesus can change their lives. Then we must show them where they fit into the community of believers and provide opportunities for them to “live” their stories in mission and outreach opportunities in the world around them. We must play our part by being ready daily to share how our devotional times with Jesus each day are impacting our lives and decisions …

How Excellent Is Thy Lovingkindness: The Gospel Principle Of Hesed, Dan Belnap, Daniel L. Belnap

The concept of hesed (pronounced khesed) 1 is unfamiliar to most Bible readers. This is partly due to the fact that it is a Hebrew word found in the Old Testament; thus, we will never come across the word hesed anywhere in our King James Version (KJV). Moreover, the term is difficult to translate, the KJV providing no less than fifteen different terms to signify the presence of hesed in the text, the most common being mercy, kindness, and lovingkindness.2 Yet the principle of hesed may be one of the most important doctrinal concepts in the Old Testament, …

Sanctuary In Time: Shabbat As The Soul Of Modern Jewry And The Essence Of “Doing” Judaism, Trevan G. Hatch, Loren D. Marks

According to the Hebrew Scriptures, Shabbat was established from the foundations of the world. It was the climax of God’s creation (Gen 1:1– 2:3; Ex 20:11). God “hallowed” the seventh day “because on it, [He] rested from all the work that he had done in creation” (Gen 2:3, NRSV). Shabbat is also associated with the Exodus from Egypt (see Deut 5:12– 15; cf. Ex 23:9– 12). God commanded Israel to observe Shabbat as a remembrance that they “were slaves in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there” (Deut 5:15, NRSV). After the Exodus, …

Salt, Smurthwaite, And Smith: The Origins Of The Modern Legal Identity Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Nathan B. Oman

In 2019 there existed a legal entity known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This fact will likely strike most readers as unexceptional. More interesting, however, prior to 2019 there had been no such legal entity as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for over 150 years, the last of that name likely having been disincorporated in 1862. Even more strangely, although there were millions of people around the globe who identified themselves as Latter-day Saints, in 2019 the only member of the legal entity known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints …

The authors are family scholars who study the nexus of religion and family relationships ( Dollahite and Marks, 2020 ; Marks, Hatch, and Dollahite, 2018 ). We have conducted inhome, in- depth interviews (about two hours each) with 30 Jewish couples and families across several states. In this chapter we share many fi rst- person quotations about ritual and practice in Jewish families from three major branches of Judaism: Conservative, Orthodox, and Reform. A unique aspect of these quotes is that a number are from observant Jewish children, youth, and young adults, a group that has been largely overlooked in …

“You Don’T Belong In Nashville!”: Politics, Country Music, And The Reception Of Robert Altman’S Nashville, Dan Blim
Faculty Publications
Robert Altman’s film Nashville (1975) generated a prodigious amount of press commentary following its release. Early on, critics praised the film, but a disappointing box office led many to assume a split between big-city liberal audiences and small-town conservative audiences. Subsequent press coverage connected this divide to both the film’s politics and its use and portrayal of country music, as political pundits, music critics, country music stars, and general audiences weighed in. This essay situates the reception of the film within a shifting country music industry, which was growing increasingly aligned with the Republican Party and increasingly suspicious of new …
