Black Women Matter: Assessing Scales To Examine Minority Stress And Intersectional Microaggression, Vanessa N. Jones
SEWSA 2016 Intersectionality in the New Millennium: An Assessment of Culture, Power, and Society
Greater understanding of minority stress and intersectional microaggression in African American women’s lived experience may contribute to improved health outcomes. To date, there is a scarcity of research exploring intersectionality and psychometric instruments. This review examines purpose, format, psychometric properties, and cultural applicability of seven measurement scales that assess gendered racism and sexual identity. Future research should include diverse samples of African American women to improve external validity. In clinical practice, measurement scales provide an objective tool to evaluate and differentiate minority stress.

Background & Purpose: Many victims of sexual assault are rising to advocate for sexual assault prevention on college campuses, including Christian college campuses. Some reports indicate that Christian campuses shy away from the topic and refuse to allow needed programs on sex or sexual assault to be introduced to their campuses, even though it is so adamantly needed. The purpose of this study was to increase the promotion of sexual assault awareness and prevention to students on the campus of Charleston Southern University.

This attention has not been about their nature of offering reasonably priced hotel lodging for tourists visiting the neighbouring major cities, but due to the killings of black men in America. Since the election of President Barack Obama in 2009, the notion of a post-racial America has circulated. With Congress members referring to the president as a tar baby to the numerous killings of black people by law enforcement and civilians these actions contradict this notion.

The purpose of this research project is to fill the lack of information on the physical components, amount of pain experienced, and past injuries of competitive dancers under the professional level. Little research has been performed in this population. A total of 15 female competitive dancers were tested between the ages of 15-18 years old. Body mass index (BMI), height, weight, muscular endurance, aerobic endurance, flexibility, and alignment were measured, and then a pain rating survey and injury questionnaire were anonymously completed by the subjects. This research proposes a model that represents a synthesis of various choreographic evaluation principles and education reform curricula. Considering key concepts within education reform and arts education, this model attempts to provide insight on how choreographic pedagogy could possibly enhance student motivation, the needs of students at risk of dropping out, the curricular goals of reformation, and how choreographic pedagogy meets these goals. Through qualitative research, points of connection have been made between curricula specifically designed for efforts of reformation and the choreographic evaluation process used in the dance classroom. The “Question Bridge: Black Males” is an interactive, transmedia dialogue among a critical mass of black men. The project began in 2012 as a documentary and has since evolved into an interactive website and mobile app in which black males of all ages and backgrounds ask and respond to questions about experiences via a video camera. The project is designed to breakdown the negative perceptions of black males and create a safe space for honest dialogue and healing. Today’s classroom demands a different style of engagement and assessment, primarily due to the changing nature of today’s learners. In fact, according to Liz Dwyer in “How Gaming is Changing the Classroom,” by the time students are age 21, they will have participated in over 10,000 hours of video gaming. As a result, using traditional pedagogies and “skill and drill” teaching strategies aren’t as effective with students who are more inclined to favor a controller over a book. The Blackboard course management system includes the tool "statistics tracking." An instructor can use this tool to generate a report that "displays the summary of usage for that content item and [the students] enrolled in the course. The access date, hour and day of the week are all reported for the selected item and [students]." In this case study the researcher will correlate aggregate data about students' visits to numerous content items in a course and their final grade in the course. In a digital environment, teachers and students have access to a wide variety of material that can be used to create discussion, spark inquiry, and prompt critical thinking. The Arnold Shankman Papers are a treasure trove of historical research in a variety of areas. Within the American Civil War era, Shankman had extensively researched the “copperhead” movement of northern opposition to the war and was an expert on one of its leading members, Clement Vallandigham. Pursuing his interest in ethnic history, Dr. Shankman was a pioneer in the study of how ethnic and immigrant groups viewed each other. The Ten Tribes of Wier in America was compiled and printed by William Swansea Wier in Atlanta, Georgia in 1933. The book covers the family and descendants of Thomas and Mary Withrow Wier from the 1700s through 1933. They eventually settled in Greenwood, S.C. There are handwritten notes in the book presumably added by the author. Other surnames found in the volume include: Blake, Britt, Dunbar, Gregg, Peden, McDill, McDowell, Mull, and Scott. The book includes photographs and a folding generational chart. Please see the attached document.

The collection consists of a booklet of letters to the editor from George A. Trenholm and William Gregg concerning The Blue Ridge Railroad. This railroad was to be built to complete the connection of the line that was to run from Charleston, SC to Cincinnati, Ohio. This line would have run from Anderson, SC to Knoxville, TN. Construction began in 1854 and ceased just before the beginning of the Civil War. The railroad was never completed. The letters appeared in the Edgefield Advertiser, Charleston Courier, and Charleston Mercury in 1860.
