Applications Of Information Literacy To Teaching Independent Music Analysis, Katrina Roush Mar 2024

Applications Of Information Literacy To Teaching Independent Music Analysis, Katrina Roush

School of Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

Undergraduate and graduate music students learn many tools beneficial for music analysis, and they practice applying these tools to music in their music theory classes. However, they often struggle to perform useful analysis on their own without the guidance of an instructor. They can have trouble understanding that analysis should communicate their personal interpretation of a work, and they may not realize that independent analysis usually requires some preparatory work (analytical research),such as discovering if others have analyzed the work and learning new analytical methods. This article shows that there is a strong connection between various steps in the music-analytical …

Approaching The Norns Shield As A Laptop Alternative For Democratizing Music Technology Ensembles, Anthony T. Marasco

School of Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

Music technology ensembles—often consisting of multiple laptops as the performers’ primary instrument—provide collaborative artistic experiences for electronic musicians. In an effort to remove the significant technical and financial barriers that laptops can present to performers looking to start their own group, this paper proposes a solution in the form of the Norns Shield, a computer music instrument (CMI) that requires minimal set-up and promotes immediate music-making to performers of all skill levels. Prior research centered on using alternative CMIs to supplant laptops in ensemble settings is discussed, and the benefits of adopting the Norns Shield in service of democratizing and …

Benedicto Sáenz 'Libera Me': Occidentalisms In Latin America Nineteenth-Century Sacred Music, Andrés R. Amado Jan 2022

Benedicto Sáenz 'Libera Me': Occidentalisms In Latin America Nineteenth-Century Sacred Music, Andrés R. Amado

School of Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article uses concepts of Occidentalism and the musical analysis of a funerary responsory by nineteenth-century Guatemalan composer Benedicto Sáenz (1807-1857) to examine possible reasons why music from nineteenth-century Latin America remains relatively neglected in the region and beyond, unlike the better explored repertoires from colonial times and from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Based on Latin American postcolonial notions of Occidentalism as the construction of the Western Hemisphere by Western Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and analysis of Sáenzs responsory Libera Me within the context of changing political, social, and musical trends in nineteenth-century Guatemala, I argue …

Designing Collaborative And Mediated Experiences With Networked Circuit-Bent Devices, Anthony T. Marasco, Tate Carson, Matthew A. Bardin Jun 2020

Designing Collaborative And Mediated Experiences With Networked Circuit-Bent Devices, Anthony T. Marasco, Tate Carson, Matthew A. Bardin

School of Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

Circuit bending provides creative methods of generating sound by subverting a device’s normal operation through hacking. While the means of interacting with hacked devices in performance are primarily limited to tactile controls and explicitly mapped actions, exploring alternative methods of engaging with these instruments would allow for mediation systems and collaborative performance design to enhance the use of nostalgic devices in audio/visual art. This paper discusses the artistic benefits of blending the musical and aesthetic practices of circuit bending with the field of networked musical performance. We present the artistic benefits of traditional circuit bending and methods of extending networked …

Curricular Change In Collegiate Programs: Toward A More Inclusive Music Education, Bryan Powell, Donna Hewitt, Gareth Dylan Smith, Beatrice Olesko, Virginia Davis Jan 2020

Curricular Change In Collegiate Programs: Toward A More Inclusive Music Education, Bryan Powell, Donna Hewitt, Gareth Dylan Smith, Beatrice Olesko, Virginia Davis

School of Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite decades of discussion, debate, and incremental gains, acceptance of popular music education in collegiate institutions is still in its inception. Higher education (and indeed, education in general) in the United States is rife with pervasive inequality and injustice, excluding large numbers of potential students on the basis of race, class, income, and cultural orientation. If music education is to continue and thrive in the 21st century and beyond, widespread curricular changes are needed in preservice music teacher education to move toward a model that is inclusive, equitable, diverse, and culturally responsive. The purpose of this paper is to illuminate …

Más Allá Del Nacionalismo: Fronteras Disciplinarias De Los Estudios Musicales Centroamericanos [Beyond Nationalism: Disciplinary Frontiers Of Central American Music Studies], Andrés R. Amado Jan 2020

Más Allá Del Nacionalismo: Fronteras Disciplinarias De Los Estudios Musicales Centroamericanos [Beyond Nationalism: Disciplinary Frontiers Of Central American Music Studies], Andrés R. Amado

School of Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

Toward A Multiple Mentor Model In Music Education, Kristina R. Weimer Dec 2017

Toward A Multiple Mentor Model In Music Education, Kristina R. Weimer

School of Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

Literature supports the importance of mentoring relationships in making meaningful contributions to novice teacher induction, and that especially important in the relationship is matching mentor/mentee by subject and grade level and in close proximity. The physical location of mentors to mentees and their availability impacts the relationship. Proximity is necessary to view the mentor as accessible and provide opportunities for interactions during the school day.

In music education, matching mentor/mentee by subject and grade level and in close proximity can be challenging. Because of music's specialization, music teachers are often the only one in their building. I previously examined two …

Harnessing The Power Of Failure In Your Music Classroom: Grit, Growth Mindset, & Greatness, Virginia Davis, Diane C. Persellin Feb 2017

Harnessing The Power Of Failure In Your Music Classroom: Grit, Growth Mindset, & Greatness, Virginia Davis, Diane C. Persellin

School of Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

No pain, no gain. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. These and other similar phrases represent attitudes most teachers hope will inspire their students. Surrounded by walls adorned with such inspirational quotes, we music teachers walk a fine line between identifying students’ musical mistakes and encouraging them to keep trying. We may wonder during this process why some students seem to crumble under criticism while others never quit, despite constant difficulty. What can we do to encourage students to learn from their mistakes? What roles do talent and hard …

The Effects Of Musical Ensembles-In-Residence On Elementary Students’ Auditory Discrimination And Spatial Reasoning Skills: A Longitudinal Study, Daniel C. Johnson, Virginia Davis Jun 2016

The Effects Of Musical Ensembles-In-Residence On Elementary Students’ Auditory Discrimination And Spatial Reasoning Skills: A Longitudinal Study, Daniel C. Johnson, Virginia Davis

School of Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this longitudinal project was to investigate the effects of a program combining musical ensembles-in-residence with regular classroom music instruction on elementary students’ auditory discrimination and spatial intelligence scores. In combination with regular, sequential general music classes as part of their school curriculum, participants in the program received two half-hour lesson each week, from musical-ensembles-in-residence. These chamber ensembles provided aural models for reinforcing fundamental concepts for four consecutive years. Researchers collected data from a stratified, random sample of students in grades K-2 and 4-5 receiving the experimental program and demographically similar comparison schools, which did not receive any …

Cape Verdeans In The Atlantic: The Formation Of Kriolu Music And Dance Styles On Ship And In Port, Susan Hurley-Glowa Nov 2015

Cape Verdeans In The Atlantic: The Formation Of Kriolu Music And Dance Styles On Ship And In Port, Susan Hurley-Glowa

School of Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

Working from the premise that Cape Verde is a member of the Black Atlantic musical family whose styles flowed freely from port to port, this study has delved deeper into the styles and time frames that figured into the mix, verifying that periods of intense transatlantic port activity correspond to the emergence of new genres. Cape Verde’s musical history might be viewed as a sandbar on the beach that is continually reshaped and born a new by waves of musical influences circling between the continents. The ideas of individual Cape Verdeans ultimately created the music, of course, and a comparative …

"Rockin’ Around The Clock: An Exploratory Study Of Music Teachers' Personal Listening Choices, Virginia Davis

School of Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study aimed to explore the personal music listening choices of music teachers. Specifically, in which formats do teachers listen to music for personal pleasure, how do they obtain the music they choose, and how frequently do they choose to listen to certain genres of music. Using an online survey, music teachers answered questions about their listening and purchasing habits. Results were then analyzed using simple statistics and Analyses of Variance (ANOVAs) to discover listening preferences for the group as a whole, as well as what differences may occur with regards to age, teaching situation or other factors. Through this …
