Efficacy Of Bringing Higher Education To The Tribal Rural Community In Southern Philippines, Miezelle Mae G. Sayson, Gina Fe Causin Ph.D., Grace Marie Patrick

Diversity Conference

Abstract

Bringing tertiary or higher education to the tribal community in Southern Philippines was very effective. There are more tribal members who are now beginning their higher education degrees. This means that there are more tribal individuals who are in their way to get their higher education degree in two to three years. With their higher education diploma, the members of the tribal community will have better access to higher paying jobs. These members will become role models of the younger generation in the tribal communities.

Vacation Home Design, Megan Hall Apr 2020

Vacation Home Design, Megan Hall

Undergraduate Research Conference

A family of four requested a contemporary design for a 900 square-foot vacation home. Due to the husband’s limited mobility, the accessibility standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guided the design because the layout must accommodate a future wheelchair. The two sons requested a loft with a private bath for their sleeping quarters.

“Pretty Is As Pretty Does:” Child Beauty Pageants In Deep East Texas, Taryn Lenert Apr 2019

“Pretty Is As Pretty Does:” Child Beauty Pageants In Deep East Texas, Taryn Lenert

Undergraduate Research Conference

Introduction

Do child beauty pageants affect contestants’ perception of gender norms, gender performance, and confidence? To answer this question, three observations of pageants, three face-to-face interviews, and survey responses from two East Texas pageant Facebook groups will be analyzed through the lens of West and Zimmerman’s theoretical concept of doing gender (1987). Deep East Texas is unique due to the fact that much of its culture originates in old southern views of beauty, the norm of hyper-femininity, and the importance of traditional gender roles in both public and private life.

Exploration Of Gender Portrayals In Marvel Comics, Chiagozie Nwasuruba

Undergraduate Research Conference

Comic books have been a major part of American pop culture since around the 1930s. These comic books depicted ordinary people who, through some sort of accident or happenstance, gained superpowers. People who could lift cars over their heads or leap over buildings in a single bound. Comic books have a long history. The history of comics is divided into six ages: the Golden Age, the Silver Age, the Bronze Age, the Plastic Age, the Revival Age, and the present. There have been many different comic book companies over the years, but at the forefront of comic book culture, there …

The Artist Residency And Lumen Printing, Austin Cullen Apr 2019

The Artist Residency And Lumen Printing, Austin Cullen

Undergraduate Research Conference

The artist residency is a critical and informative experience that is privileged to few, and revered by many. Creating work in a completely foreign environment can yield beautiful and new work that the artists could have never conceived of making. Artwork could be made about anything, but choosing a specific subject matter, or theme, can be very challenging. This difficulty arises from lack of knowledge, experience, or most importantly, being bored with one's surroundings. Artist residencies, often being in other countries and always providing a new atmosphere, can be a great way to jumpstart new artwork. Residencies are incredibly difficult …

Caddo Inspired Coil Pots, Jordan Weaver Apr 2019

Caddo Inspired Coil Pots, Jordan Weaver

Undergraduate Research Conference

When my bosses, John Handley and Alisa Steed, asked me to plan an educational program to go along with the upcoming Contemporary Caddo art show at the Cole Art Center I knew I wanted to find an art lesson to teach children. Creating is a great way to teach children about history because it invites them to take an active role in their education, rather than passively listening. After learning that traditional Caddo potters created coil pots out of clay, I knew I wanted to teach this art form to children in the community. Making coil pots requires children to …

My creative research for this project consisted of building a finished work of art each week during a five-week time period. The intent of the project was to expedite concept development and increase my personal technical speed while focusing on craftsmanship and design. Having seven days to respond to a content prompt, I was challenged to focus on creating without …

“Happiest Delineation:” Literature, Reading Habits, And Characterization In Austen’S "Northanger Abbey", Emily Crider

Undergraduate Research Conference

In response to the strictly gendered society of Regency England, Jane Austen’s 1817 Gothic parody novel Northanger Abbey offers insight to the nuances of gender disparities. As such, the use of a gendered and historical critical approach throughout the project allows for a more comprehensive view of the societal expectations and taboos of 18th-century reading.

The steps I followed in the design process are outlined below.
