Retainers Of Anarchy: In Conversation With Howie Tsui, Michael Brendan Baker

Faculty Publications and Scholarship

Michael Brendan Baker interviews Vancouver-based artist Howie Tsui. His latest work, Retainers of Anarchy, is a multidisciplinary project — including paperworks, sculpture, built structures, animation, and video — organized around a large-format video projection and an interactive installation component to be exhibited at the Vancouver Art Gallery in spring 2017. It will be Tsui’s first solo museum exhibition and, in terms of its scope, the largest work he has yet produced. The project is a response to a video project commissioned by the Chinese government for the 2010 World Expo that depicts a Song Dynasty festival in a manner that …

Design As Choreography: Information In Action, Heidi Overhill Jan 2015

Design As Choreography: Information In Action, Heidi Overhill

Faculty Publications and Scholarship

Museum exhibitions are conventionally understood to be educational, meaning that they convey information to visitors. The content of this information is understood to include visual, auditory, and written media, as well as content from tactile, spatial, and social encounters. This article asserts that visitors also gain knowledge through bodily kinesthetic experiences while in the exhibition setting. Emerging research in other areas has revealed connections between physical posture and cognitive issues, such as emotion and attitude, but this has not yet been applied to museum practice. This article suggests that exhibition planning could exploit bodily experience more explicitly as a form …

Notes On The Rockumentary Renaissance, Michael Brendan Baker Jul 2014

Notes On The Rockumentary Renaissance, Michael Brendan Baker

Faculty Publications and Scholarship

Rockumentaries are, generally speaking, documentary films about rock music and related idioms, and usually feature some combination of performance footage, interviews, and undirected material. The genre arrived when it did because of the profile of rock music within youth culture and the transformation of the music industry, and it was delivered to the screen with tools and technology newly available to filmmakers at the time. Rockumentary emerges in the 1960s as part of a larger shift in the character and content of Western youth culture and popular music and ascends to the status of the theatrical documentary par excellence through …

Juxt - Suppose: A Graphic Definition Of The Creative Process, Ken Snell Jan 2014

Juxt - Suppose: A Graphic Definition Of The Creative Process, Ken Snell

Faculty Publications and Scholarship

This paper is a photographic and poetic interpretation of what creativity means to me (Ken Snell) as an architectural educator. It is a like a window that affords a view upon creativity but also it provides a glimpse inside the imaginative world of its author. By viewing the images and reading the resulting poems viewers insert themselves into the process. Hopefully they will find personal meaning that lies between the selected pairs of images…It is like hearing the implied 5th note in a harmonic chord.

The Politics Of Podcasting, Jonathan Sterne, Jeremy Morris, Michael Brendan Baker, Ariana Moscote Freire Dec 2008

The Politics Of Podcasting, Jonathan Sterne, Jeremy Morris, Michael Brendan Baker, Ariana Moscote Freire

Faculty Publications and Scholarship

Our essay historicises the term “podcast” and offers some new contexts for understanding the history of the term, the practices it designates and its relation to broadcasting.[4] [4] The paper proceeds in four sections. We first analyse the origins and emergence of the word podcasting among the press and the digerati. We dispute the standard argument that podcasting’s main innovation is a marriage of RSS and Apple’s iPod by presenting podcasting as a practice that arose from a network of actors, technologies and behaviours. In the second section, we discuss how podcasting works and why we need to look beyond …

Dresden Story And The Emergence Of The Talking Head In The Nfb Documentary, Michael Brendan Baker Oct 2008

Dresden Story And The Emergence Of The Talking Head In The Nfb Documentary, Michael Brendan Baker

Faculty Publications and Scholarship

Numerous surveys of the development of documentary cinema and analyses of its transitional moments exist especially those concerning technological evolution and shifts in representational strategy. And yet few histories clearly mark out a space for the emergence of the interview subject as one of the standard rhetorical devices in nonfiction film. These “talking heads” ranging in appearance from speaking subjects directly addressing the camera to the testimony of witnesses addressing an on-screen or off-screen interviewer are a dominant feature of contemporary documentary cinema and a basic component of film and television language. While there are various discussions concerning the ideological …

Hermeneutics Of The Archaeological Artifact: Destruction And Reconstruction Of The Lost Meaning, Anna K. Boshnakova Jan 2007

Hermeneutics Of The Archaeological Artifact: Destruction And Reconstruction Of The Lost Meaning, Anna K. Boshnakova

Faculty Publications and Scholarship

The understanding of an epoch’s tradition and culture depends on the complex interpretation and understanding of each surviving artifact that can contribute to the reconstruction of a coherent notion of the past. Therefore, from the point of view of cultural hermeneutics, any archaeological artifact may be regarded as a creative expression of thought fixed in various forms (in a text or an inscription, in an image or an object) that belongs to a definite cultural and historical environment. Such creative expressions of thought in the form of images, objects, texts or apparently meaningless inscriptions come to us as hermeneutic problems …
