Sanctuary Support, Flora Chubbs, Dan Tarakanov, Jonathan Cheung

Egypt Migrations Partnership and Comparative Immigrant Experiences

Our StoryMap, Sanctuary Support, showcases the importance of religion and places of worship for immigrants, and demonstrates how religiosity contributes to facilitating a smooth integration into newcomers’ adopted cultures. Religion is a powerful aid that can help to ground us in our identity, morals, spirituality, and community. Firstly, we delve into Canada's immigration history, exploring how faith-based organizations have played a crucial role in meeting the burgeoning demands of support for newcomers during immigration waves. Through secondary sources, we researched what types of support are available currently and how these pertain to immigrants’ needs. Finally, in our Case Studies: Fostering …

Social Media “Ghosts”: How Facebook (Meta) Memories Complicates Healing For Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Nicolette Little Jan 2023

Social Media “Ghosts”: How Facebook (Meta) Memories Complicates Healing For Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Nicolette Little

Publications and Scholarship

This paper contributes to feminist conversations about algorithms and design justice by examining ways Facebook’s (Meta) Memories affordance, when it draws on previously posted photographs of abusive former partners, is problematic for gender-based violence (GBV) survivors. With analyses drawn from semi-structured interviews with twelve “survivor-users” and a walkthrough of Memories’ settings to better understand what opportunities users have to control this function, this paper finds that Memories triggers survivors, makes their abuser seem inescapable and reduces survivors’ sense of agency, among other challenges to their well-being. By extending abusers’ intimidation back into survivors’ lives, Memories unintentionally supports perpetrators’ aims: to …

Barriers And Facilitators To Arts Participation In Older Adults, Kate Dupuis Jan 2022

Barriers And Facilitators To Arts Participation In Older Adults, Kate Dupuis

Arts Participation in Canadian Older Adults

Despite a growing literature showcasing the benefits of arts participation for older adults, data on potential barriers to participation are limited. A survey was developed to assess key facilitators and barriers to participation in the arts in Canadian older adults. One hundred and ninety-four residents of Ontario, Canada aged 55 years+ completed the survey. Almost half of the participants (45%) were participating in the arts, with the most common activities in the domains of visual arts and dance. Barriers to participation included lack of interest in available programs, cost, and not wanting to participate alone. Facilitators to participation included a …

Arts Participation In Canadian Older Adults During Covid-19, Kate Dupuis, Emma Bender Jan 2022

Arts Participation In Canadian Older Adults During Covid-19, Kate Dupuis, Emma Bender

Arts Participation in Canadian Older Adults

Arts participation can be incredibly beneficial for the health and well-being of older adults. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many arts organizations were unable to provide in-person activities, and moved to alternate forms of program delivery. We examined whether and how Canadian older adults continued participating in the arts during the initial wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. A 28-item survey was completed by 141 individuals (M = 70.5 years, range = 55-94, 66% female). Although the majority of respondents (70%) were engaging in the arts during the first wave of the pandemic, their engagement had declined compared to …

Connecting Alzheimer’S Patients And Caregivers Through Music And Support Programs Designed Into The Built Environment, Carly Board

Featured Student Work

Alzheimer's disease is an incurable neurological disorder that not only affects the individual diagnosed with this disease but their family members and caregivers as well. This research study examines how the relationship between Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers can be improved through various types of therapy and design. More specifically, how music therapy, support programs and familiar spaces can better connect individuals with Alzheimer’s disease to their family or caregivers when properly designed into the built environment. To determine if the built environment can better connect individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their families or caregivers, a survey was conducted. The …

Changing The Game: The Continuous Adaptation Of Resilient Single Mothers, Lea Caragata, Elizabeth C. Watters, Sara Cumming Feb 2021

Changing The Game: The Continuous Adaptation Of Resilient Single Mothers, Lea Caragata, Elizabeth C. Watters, Sara Cumming

Publications and Scholarship

This paper explores theoretical and conceptual developments in our understanding of resilience as these apply to single mother-led families. Rather than the earlier and simpler notion that resilience implied 'bouncing back' we suggest, consistent with work by other resilience scholars, that the varied demonstrations of resilience are a ‘changing of the game’. By this we mean that resilience involves the creation of new outcomes, or, new ways of being through constant adaptation. Further, we argue this transformation to resilient ways of being occurs across all categories of resilience. This is a significant contribution of this work as we submit that …

Sensory Interventions For Older Adults Living With Dementia, William Tigno, Leigh Hayden, Christina Passarelli, Susan Shepley Feb 2021

Sensory Interventions For Older Adults Living With Dementia, William Tigno, Leigh Hayden, Christina Passarelli, Susan Shepley

Publications and Scholarship

This tool maps out existing literature on sensory interventions for people living with dementia. It allows users to select a sensory intervention that might be feasible in their context, produce outcomes that are relevant to them. It is based on a scoping review of the literature. Our scoping review identified what interventions exist to produce particular outcomes, in particular contexts. It did not address effectiveness. As such, this tool will help you identify what others have done in a particular context, and to produce particular outcomes. It will not tell you which options are most effective.

Developing Global Education Opportunities At Sheridan College Using Coil (Collaborative (Collaborative Online International Learning), Dr. Genevieve Amaral, Kelly Mclay Jan 2021

Developing Global Education Opportunities At Sheridan College Using Coil (Collaborative (Collaborative Online International Learning), Dr. Genevieve Amaral, Kelly Mclay

COIL Resources and Reports

International educational experiences are widely recognized as vital to both student educational development and the Canadian economy. However, only one in ten students in Canada studies abroad during their post-secondary programmes; at colleges, this number drops to one percent. Meanwhile, historically-underrepresented groups including racialized and Indigenous students, students with disabilities, and lower-income students continue to face additional barriers to study abroad and therefore have limited access to international education. The last decade has seen increased interest in “Internationalization at Home” – strategies for supporting global learning that do not require physical mobility - arising, at least in part, from efforts …

The 3d Acid Test: Perceptual Attributes Vs Renderable Elements, Kathryn Wehrle Oct 2020

The 3d Acid Test: Perceptual Attributes Vs Renderable Elements, Kathryn Wehrle

Publications and Scholarship

The Romantics artificially embellished light and colour to convey emotion in their artworks. Light and colour were used to ignite a sense of enchantment and to stir an emotional response from the viewer. 3D software operates within this established visual tradition: current digital artistic representation involves a similarly embellished reality. This is a testament to what we continually want to see and how we would like to be visually entertained and informed, and physically based 3D renderer Arnold provides the tools for this continuation. Inherent in the world’s most-used 3D rendering programme Arnold are light and surface attributes which have …
