De Rechtsstaat In Cyberspace?, Mireille Hildebrandt

Cyberspace is inmiddels overal. Intussen raakt iedereen via de smartphone ‘always on(line)’. Deze …

Greeted Like Liberators: Media, Myth, And Metaphor In The Rhetorical Construction Of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Revised. Sed., Charles Franklin Bisbee
Greeted Like Liberators: Media, Myth, And Metaphor In The Rhetorical Construction Of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Revised. Sed., Charles Franklin Bisbee
Charles Franklin Bisbee
Journalistic performance in covering the presidential argument to undertake Operation Iraqi Freedom drew almost instantaneous criticism from within the profession. The general line of criticism held that journalists failed a “watchdog” standard of applying scrutiny to the rhetoric of public officials in terms of fact-based and legitimate argumentation. Alleged causes were usually rooted in al-Qaeda’s September 11, 2001 terroristic attacks inside the United States. Some critics submitted that post-attack journalistic “patriotism” granted President George W. Bush an overly-generous benefit of doubt in framing an American response. Others faulted journalistic norms. But the criticism, however admissible, remained far from conclusive. My …

Tripartism In Ireland, Jon Foster

Over the past few years, the term “PIIGS” has become synonymous with economic concerns and fears of collapse. The acronym, which currently refers to the European countries of Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain: was originally just ‘PIGS’ , used to group the similar economies of Southern Europe when considering them for acceptance into the European Monetary Union. Nevertheless, as a result of the global financial crisis, this term soon came to identify economically weak and overly indebted nations. However, unlike Italy, Greece, and Portugal, who had before the crisis demonstrated relatively slow growth, modest unemployment, and a propensity to …

Landownership problem and control of resources remains as a political development issue in the Philippines. Agrarian reform is a necessary condition for agricultural modernization and rural industrialization and the fundamental mooring for global competition. Agrarian Reform has contributed to improvement of the socio-economic conditions of landless farmers and political development of the Philippines in terms of engaging the landless in the process of policy making and distribution of large private landholdings to the landless. Modalities giving peasants a stake in society such as decisive role in agrarian legislations, engaging them in dialogue to resolve agrarian cases, presenting manifesto pinpointing their …

Labor Unions And Climate Change, Jon Foster
Jon Foster
The challenge of climate change and the need for a shift to more ecologically sustainable methods of production and innovation can dramatically redefine the strategy and objectives of the labor movement as a whole. Furthermore, within the specific sectors of: Agriculture, Construction, Utilities, and Automobiles, the reality of a changing environment, and social views, has already begun redefining what the future of these industries will mean in relation to labor unions.

Differences Between The Water Baptism And The Moment Of Receiving The Holy Spirit, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor
Differences Between The Water Baptism And The Moment Of Receiving The Holy Spirit, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor
Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor
From the New Testamental’s point of view, there are some differences between the time of the water baptism and the time of receiving the Holy Spirit. Even if chronologically the two acts can be very close, we can always make a clear temporal distinction between them. Using the most relevant passages from Acts, this article intends to prove that in all cases the baptism with the Holy Spirit was a distinct experience from the water baptism. The article also describes tangentially the receiving of the Holy Spirit.

La Construccion Social Del Cientifico, Jorge Gibert-Galassi

The interview-based paper describes structures and mechanisms which link market, State and the university, in order to explain, in principle, what a scientist is meant to be in Chile. By analysing four communities (astronomers, molecular biologists, sociologists, and communication scientists), it attempts to uncover the social and cultural reasons why there are these scientific communities with patent social and intellectual identity; latent but constituted identities, evolving; and communities in path-searching definable identity. Reinforcing a utilitarian historical relationship between university and society, and exacerbated by Neo-liberalism, these structures and mechanisms have been precipitated during the last 20 years. Finally, the paper …

Growing Apart? Ethno-Regional Identity Politics, Tensions And Threats To The Nigerian State, 1960-2010, Ali Simon Yusufu Bagaji
Ali Simon Yusufu Bagaji
The notion of democracy, the motive behind party formation, ethno-regional spread of parties, voting behaviour and pattern of electoral results, and pre and post election crises among other fissiparous tendencies are all indications that Nigeria is a highly divided society. This article examines manifestation of ethno-regional identity politics, and how identity has re-focused political participation, struggles and conflicts in the Nigerian federation. It concludes that despite institutionalisation of measures aimed at preventing the use of any form of divisive identity in the Nigerian body politic. Nigeria, after over fifty years of state-building and political engineering, appears to be growing apart.

Abstract The present paper is designed to shed light on the intricacies of English- Arabic subtitling. The data comprises a video clip of an interview with Mr. Galloway conducted by the Sky News TV station. The sample of the study consists of twenty MA translation students enrolled in the second semester of the academic year 2008/2009 at Al-Quds University. The paper reveals that subtitling students are faced with several linguistic, cultural and technical problems which may jeopardise communication, thought to be crucial for target audience. The study concludes with some pedagogical implications that will hopefully help subtitling students deal with …

Elementos Para Una EconomíA PolíTica Del Republicanismo: Un AnáLisis CríTico De La Renta BáSica De Alaska, David Casassas, Jurgen De Wispelaere
Jurgen De Wispelaere
