Feminist Oral History Practice In An Era Of Digital Self-Representation, Margo Shea May 2018

Feminist Oral History Practice In An Era Of Digital Self-Representation, Margo Shea

Margo Shea

Beyond Women’s Words unites feminist scholars, artists, and community activists working with the stories of women and other historically marginalized subjects to address the contributions and challenges of doing feminist oral history.

Feminists who work with oral history methods want to tell stories that matter. They know, too, that the telling of those stories—the processes by which they are generated and recorded, and the different contexts in which they are shared and interpreted—also matters—a lot. Using Sherna Berger Gluckand Daphne Patai’s classic text, Women’s Words, as a platform to reflect on how feminisms, broadly defined, have influenced, and continue to …

Indefinite Detention, Colonialism, And Settler Prerogative In The United States, Natsu Taylor Saito May 2018

Indefinite Detention, Colonialism, And Settler Prerogative In The United States, Natsu Taylor Saito

Natsu Taylor Saito

The primacy accorded individual civil and political rights is often touted as one of the United States' greatest achievements. However, mass incarcerations of indefinite duration have occurred consistently throughout U.S. history and have primarily targeted people of color. The dominant narrative insists that the United States is a political democracy and portrays each instance of indefinite detention in exceptionalist terms. This essay argues that the historical patterns of indefinite detention are better explained by recognizing the United States as a settler colonial state whose claimed prerogative to expand its territorial reach and contain/control populations over which it exercises jurisdiction inevitably …

Independent Christian Colleges And Universities, William Vance Trollinger Apr 2018

Independent Christian Colleges And Universities, William Vance Trollinger

William Vance Trollinger Jr.

The category independent Christian colleges and universities is not a very large one. The reason for this is rather simple: as William Ringenberg has noted in the introduction to his helpful 1988 bibliography on such schools, "there are not many contemporary colleges and universities that are both continuing Christian in philosophical orientation and independent of denominational ties in governance." While this may change in the future, given the weakening of denominational loyalties among American Protestants, the fact remains that there are not too many independent Christian colleges.

For purposes of this essay I will I be looking at fourteen institutions. …

Unconscionability, Freedom, And The Portrait Of A Lady, Jennifer Nadler Apr 2018

Unconscionability, Freedom, And The Portrait Of A Lady, Jennifer Nadler

Jennifer Nadler

The doctrine of unconscionability allows a court to refuse to enforce a contract because of its unfairness. Although well settled in contract law, the doctrine remains controversial. Critics of the doctrine argue that it is impermissibly paternalistic: it rescues responsible agents from the consequences of their own mistakes.' Defenders of the doctrine admit its paternalism but insist that the unfairness in cases of unconscionability makes paternalist intervention legitimate. Critics say that the doctrine is sentimental and wonder if the resort to expressions such as "shocks the conscience" conceals the defenders' inability to articulate the standard these agreements supposedly transgress.' Defenders …

Response: Are American Christians Persecuted?, William Vance Trollinger

William Vance Trollinger Jr.

With an eye toward reuniting the church and the academy, this book focuses on the role that scholarship can play in making good preachers into really great preachers. This is the bridge between scholarly and popular writing that informs the sermon and makes it more powerful and meaningful for the people who regularly listen to sermons. Preachers are challenged to raise the level of their commitment to scholarship as well as overcome any pre-existing prejudices with scholarship. The preacher as scholar is the perfect way for the pulpit to respond to the challenges of a secular, post-modern world that often …

Žumberak: A Sixteenth-Century Refugee Settlement Zone, Nicholas J. Miller Feb 2018

Žumberak: A Sixteenth-Century Refugee Settlement Zone, Nicholas J. Miller

Nick Miller

This article examines the movement of Orthodox Christian refugees from Bosnia to the Habsburg Monarchy in the 1530s and their settlement in a district called Žumberak. The movement of these Uskoks has never been examined in the context of refugee studies. This study of a refugee movement and settlement over a five-century period offers the possibility of reaching a better understanding of the long-term outcome of refugee movements. Ultimately, this article suggests that the refugees affected the land they settled as much as the settlement zone affected them, and that, in this case, the refugees were able to define their …

The Prospect Of Human Spiritual Unity Through The Cosmic Story, Philip Novak Feb 2018

The Prospect Of Human Spiritual Unity Through The Cosmic Story, Philip Novak

Philip Novak

Thomas Berry and Brian Swimme have noted that, “we seem to be moving beyond any religious expression so far known to the human into a meta-religious age that seems to be a new comprehensive context for all religions.” That “new comprehensive context” is of course now known as Big History -- a.k.a. the Evolutionary Epic, Universe Story, or New Cosmic Story—the astonishing contemporary synthesis of modern sciences that tells a coherent story of the evolution of the universe from the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago to the present.

Yet with the notable exception of the writings of Berry and …

Monuments To A Lost Nation, Theodore Karamanski Feb 2018

Monuments To A Lost Nation, Theodore Karamanski

Theodore J. Karamanski

With the bright orange glow of the setting sun at their backs, the chiefs and headmen of the Potawatomi people faced the commissioners of the United States government. Most were grave and morose as they signed the treaty ceding their homelands in the Chicago area and agreeing to removal beyond the Mississippi. The 1833 Treaty of Chicago was one of a series of agreements that terminated the native title to the American heartland and seemed to end Native American presence in the life and culture of Chicago. But a rediscovery of the city's native roots emerged in the late nineteenth …

Mother Jones: Ireland To North America To Ireland, Elliot Gorn Jan 2018

Mother Jones: Ireland To North America To Ireland, Elliot Gorn

Elliot Gorn

Although we don't hear her name so often anymore, Mother Jones was one of the great figures of the early twentieth century. She and her family were refugees from the Famine, and I want to argue here that her early life in Ireland, Canada, and the United States molded her, made her the great crusader for social justice and tribune of the working class that she became as an old woman. "Freedoms just another word for nothing left to lose," Kris Kristofferson has written, words that well describe the life of Mother Jones.

Pulse - A Consultation, Barry J. Mauer Jan 2018

Pulse - A Consultation, Barry J. Mauer

Barry Mauer

On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen killed 49 people and injured 53 at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. We may never know or understand what was in Mateen’s mind, but we can situate his attack within the history of eliminationism in America. Islamist terrorism is just part of a larger phenomenon: right wing eliminationism. But despite centuries of right wing eliminationist words and deeds in the U.S., there is little or no mainstream recognition of the phenomenon. Instead, we are treated to more denial, more distraction, more obfuscation. Until we look this problem squarely in the face, it will …

Patrick Henry: The Revolutionary Hero, Bailey A. Gillespy Dec 2017

Patrick Henry: The Revolutionary Hero, Bailey A. Gillespy

Scott T. Allison

This chapter explores several factors that drove Patrick Henry towards heroism,
examines what kind of hero he was, and addresses how his heroic action
impacted America. I will discuss the various steps of Henry’s heroic journey
using Christopher Vogler’s (2007) twelve step model, based on Joseph
Campbell’s (1949) hero’s monomyth. I will identify the attributes that enabled
Henry to achieve heroic status, drawing from Allison and Goethals’ (2011)
conceptualization of the great eight traits of heroes, and I will examine the
events of his life that led to the acquisition of these traits. I will examine how
Henry’s self-transformation and …

May Keller: The Hero Who Defied All Odds, Aliya J. Sultan Dec 2017

May Keller: The Hero Who Defied All Odds, Aliya J. Sultan

Scott T. Allison

In this chapter, I will explore Keller’s heroic traits and examine what factors
specifically make her a Richmond hero. I will describe the stages of Keller’s
heroic journey and discuss Joseph Campbell’s monomyth, which includes
three major events: departure, initiation, and return. From there I will look at
how Keller exhibited the great eight heroic traits from Allison and Goethals’
(2011) list of eight qualities that every hero possesses. I will also discuss how
Keller’s leadership affected her social identity and why her gender had an
influence on her leadership as well. I will also describe the nature of Keller’s …

John Marshall: The Supreme Hero Of Justice, Emmalyn G. Dressel Dec 2017

John Marshall: The Supreme Hero Of Justice, Emmalyn G. Dressel

Scott T. Allison

The goal in this chapter is to uncover the true story of John Marshall by
focusing on his life story and dispositional characteristics that gave rise to
his heroism. This analysis will begin with a description of his heroic journey,
focusing on his childhood and on those who played a central role in his heroic
formation. Crucial points that led to his transformation of self and society
will also be described, highlighting the important characteristics prevalent
in his heroic transformations. Our analysis will then turn to a description his
avowed purpose in life, also showing how his sense of meaning …

Lawrence Douglas Wilder: The Black Pioneer, Janell M. Spigner Dec 2017

Lawrence Douglas Wilder: The Black Pioneer, Janell M. Spigner

Scott T. Allison

This chapter seeks to unlock the intriguing complexity of Wilder’s heroism
and strives to give Wilder’s heroism the methodical reveling it deserves.
Specifically, the chapter will begin by exploring Wilder’s heroism through
the metaphorical lens of Joseph Campbell’s hero monomyth. Following that
exploration will be an analytical look at the qualities Wilder possesses that
place him among the pantheon of heroes. Then I will delve into the major
transformations that Wilder underwent internally, and how he also use his
transformations to transform others. Finally, the chapter will look at the lasting
imprint that Wilder is still in the process of …

Mary Sue Terry: The Hero Who Defied The Double Bind, Thomas J. Villani Dec 2017

Mary Sue Terry: The Hero Who Defied The Double Bind, Thomas J. Villani

Scott T. Allison

This chapter focuses on Mary Sue Terry’s heroism. Specifically, the goal of this chapter is to
demonstrate how Terry’s life followed Joseph Campbell’s classic monomyth
of the hero, how she underwent important personal transformations, how
she transformed others in meaningful ways, what type of hero she was, and
what heroic traits she displayed. From this analysis, the unmistakable conclusion
that one can reach is that Mary Sue Terry is one of the most inspiring
Richmond heroes in the city’s history.

Mary Elizabeth Bowser: The Humble Hero, Morgan E. Caron Dec 2017

Mary Elizabeth Bowser: The Humble Hero, Morgan E. Caron

Scott T. Allison

In this chapter, I will detail the heroic life of Mary Elizabeth Bowser. In doing
so, I will describe her life story and note the many ways that it parallels the
hero's journey as described by comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell
(1949). I will also discuss the central characteristics of Bowser that correspond
to the traits of a hero. Moreover, my goal is to delve into her heroic transformation,
noting the sources of her transformation and the many people who
helped her grow and evolve in significant ways. Finally, I will apply several
other theories and principles of heroism science with …
