New Buddhist Silk Roads, Rosita Dellios, R. James Ferguson
New Buddhist Silk Roads, Rosita Dellios, R. James Ferguson
Rosita Dellios
As China embarks on its One Belt, One Road Initiative it is recreating not only the economic Silk Road of the past but incorporating a Buddhist-based regionalism that stretched from Eurasia to maritime kingdoms in the southern seas. It was a mandalic world of trade and a dharma of easy communication between cultures and religions. After outlining China’s One Belt, One Road Initiative, this paper provides the historical setting of silk road regionalism with its Buddhist contribution, and then moves to the possibility of a new silk road mandala. The paper concludes with a Buddhist geopolitics of peace. Here Buddhism’s …

Manual Of Arms, Kate Walker
Kate Walker
“Manual of Arms” is a video project of a choreographed performance where 16 women perform a series of moves based on drill routines. Questions are raised in the work about the roles and relationships between sports, gender and guns in this culture. The project involved weeks of rehearsal, culminating in a videoed performance involving students and faculty from the Department of Art.

Divination And Sacrifice In Song Neo-Confucianism, Joseph A. Adler
Divination And Sacrifice In Song Neo-Confucianism, Joseph A. Adler
Joseph Adler
The earliest known form of Chinese religion is the ritual dyad of divination and sacrifice practiced by the rulers of the Shang Dynasty (fourteenth to eleventh centuries b.c.e.). This chapter explores how teachers can highlight the continuity of the Confucian tradition with this central core of Chinese religiosity. Sacrificial offerings to ancestors and sages, on the one hand, and divination using the Yijing (Scripture of Change), on the other, have been the major forms of these rituals practiced by Confucians. Introducing the theories and practices of Yijing divination of some of the leading Confucians of the Song Dynasty (960–1279 c.e.)—scholars …

"Bite On Boldly": Staging Medieval And Early Modern Heretics, Cameron Hunt Mcnabb
"Bite On Boldly": Staging Medieval And Early Modern Heretics, Cameron Hunt Mcnabb
Cameron Hunt McNabb
My dissertation explores the parodic Biblical language employed by medieval and early modern staged heretics. The plays' coupling of parody and heresy forges ideological connections between the two, as when they disrupt authorized, orthodox models of the Word, as both the Scriptures and the Host. My Introduction addresses the theological controversies over the relationship between language and meaning that arise from Lollard, Catholic, and Protestant heresies. Chapter two analyzes how, in the Chester cycle, Antichrist's theological and verbal dissents are eerily similar to orthodox models. That framework forces the audience to depend on the context of the heretic's words and …
Hocus Pocus And The Croxton Play Of The Sacrament, Cameron Mcnabb
Hocus Pocus And The Croxton Play Of The Sacrament, Cameron Mcnabb
Cameron Hunt McNabb
This article addresses how heresy and parody intersect in the Croxton Play of the Sacrament through its religiously and verbally dissenting characters. The play’s highly theatrical depiction of a host miracle both enforces and undermines its emphatic endorsement of the real presence. The play ameliorates this tension by the privileging of words over deeds, aligning the transformative power of the consecratory words with the transformative power of believers’ confessions at conversion wherein both words and actions enact a transubstantiation, thus manifesting the real presence of Christ. The play’s language becomes a moral marker and the vehicle for the heretics’ dissent …
Enlightening The Bats: Sound And Place Making In Burmese Buddhist Practice, Andrew Dicks
Enlightening The Bats: Sound And Place Making In Burmese Buddhist Practice, Andrew Dicks
Andrew Dicks
In Burma (Myanmar), the Abhidhamma, a rigorous and abstract soteriological treatise situated within the vast Pali Buddhist canon, is the focus of both monastic and lay practitioners’ close study and popular veneration. In particular, the Paṭṭhāna, the last and most complex volume of the Abhidhamma, is envisioned as a keystone in the long-term preservation of the Buddha’s teachings, which are also understood to inevitably disappear. As a result of these conditions and understandings, a popular ritualized and amplified recitation of this difficult text has developed in order to maintain the text’s presence in popular consciousness. This is a conscientious move …

To Live Like Fighting Cocks: 'Fight Club' And The Ethics Of Masculinity, Andrew Slade
Andrew R. Slade
David Fincher's 1999 adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel Fight Club has prompted many academics to write about this film and has captivated many of their students. As Warren Rosenberg, chair of English at the all-male Wabash College has said, "This seems to be a movie that they all adore so we'll see if we can deconstruct it, and hopefully get them to like it less" (Students, A10). While we may take this flippant comment from a 2001 story in The Chronicle of Higher Education as just that and dismiss it as quickly as it passes, Rosenberg's sentiment reflects a widespread …
Violence And Beauty: Jacques Lacan's 'Antigone', Andrew Slade
Violence And Beauty: Jacques Lacan's 'Antigone', Andrew Slade
Andrew R. Slade
If Jean-Luc Nancy was able to write in "The Sublime Offering," in 1993, that the sublime was fashionable (25), then academic and theoretical tastes have changed, and beauty has come back in style. Throughout the late 1990s, cultural critics and theorists undertook a return to beauty against the fashion for the sublime that returned in twentieth-century theory and philosophy of art in works by Jean-François Lyotard and Theodor Adorno, among others. The interest in the sublime has been grounded in violent historical experience. Not that violence was new, or that the kinds of violence that the twentieth century bequeathed us …
Remake As Erasure In 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', Andrew Slade
Remake As Erasure In 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', Andrew Slade
Andrew R. Slade
Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) was remade as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) by Marcus Nispel. The remake erases the progressive critique of gender and family life in the United States that Hooper’s film screened and replaces that critique with a reactionary vision of sex, gender and family in the United States of the early twenty-first century.
