Task-Based Language Teaching As A Suitable Didactic Method For The Teaching And Learning Of Second And Foreign Languages, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

This research seeks to highlight that Task-Based Language Teaching is a suitable didactic method for the teaching and learning of second and foreign languages. The development and implementation of a teaching module for Spanish as a foreign language, in the face to face environment, is contemplated. The primary objective is to portray how methodological principles from Task-Based Language Teaching can be combined effectively in designing activities for face to face contexts. In this regard, empirical evidence is analysed in order to determine the effectiveness of the mixed methodology in the teaching-learning of Spanish as a foreign language, in the said …

El Enfoque Cooperativo Y Su Idoneidad Para La Enseñanza-Aprendizaje De Segundas Lenguas Y Lenguas Extranjeras, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

Artificial Intelligence And Error Correction In Second And Foreign Language Pedagogy, Kerwin A. Livingstone Oct 2012

Artificial Intelligence And Error Correction In Second And Foreign Language Pedagogy, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

This paper is an attempt to ascertain the suitability of computers for second and foreign language (SL/FL) error correction, especially those made by SL/FL learners. For this purpose, the handling of such errors proposed in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) literature will be examined. Subsequently the technologies capable of evaluating student output and identifying and correcting Non-Native Speaker (NNS) errors will be examined. Though it will be made quite clear that the computer cannot substitute a human being in total language processing, some strengths of artificial intelligence in partial language processing will be pointed out and their suitability for L2 error …

Journeys To Self And Lessons Of Other: Carlos Castaneda, Indigenismo, And The Politics Of A New Age, Ageeth Sluis Oct 2012

Journeys To Self And Lessons Of Other: Carlos Castaneda, Indigenismo, And The Politics Of A New Age, Ageeth Sluis

Ageeth Sluis

During the 1960s and 1970s, Carlos Castaneda’s work on shamanism introduced a large international readership to Mexico at a time when the Americas saw pronounced socio-political and cultural changes: mounting social unrest, political instability, civil rights movements, the counterculture, and the sexual and other revolutions. While heavily criticized by contemporary scholars, Castaneda's work became instrumental in the construction of an imagined Mexico, which, in addition to drawing counterculture tourists, featured new ways of conceptualizing race and gender. Seeking to understand the Castaneda phenomenon within a larger transnational context, the study sheds light on how new conceptions of indigenous identity informed …

The Imminent Death Of The São Miguel Dialect? Hardly…, David Silva Aug 2012

The Imminent Death Of The São Miguel Dialect? Hardly…, David Silva

David Silva

Anybody who has had the opportunity to visit the island of São Miguel and converse with the locals can’t help be struck by some extremely remarkable speech patterns.

There’s the French-sounding “u” in words such as fruta, lula, tudo and uma, as well as the German-like ö pronunciation in forms such as couve, pouco, oito, and noite.

Then there’s there are English-esque vowels in words such as sete or festa (often pronounced with a short-a sound, as in “sat” and “fasht-uh”).

And even when the vowels are, in themselves, Portuguese-sounding-enough, it often seems as they have been somehow misaligned, such …

Including Latino Communities In The Learning Process: Curricular And Pedagogical Reforms In Undergraduate Spanish Programs, Felisa Guillén Jun 2012

Including Latino Communities In The Learning Process: Curricular And Pedagogical Reforms In Undergraduate Spanish Programs, Felisa Guillén

Felisa Guillén

Since the fall semester of 2003, the Spanish program at Occidental College has been incorporating a community-service learning component in its intermediate and advanced language classes, as well as in all literature and culture courses. Based on the idea that culture-sensitive language instruction should include frequent and meaningful interactions with a language community, the Spanish program has developed a strong partnership with two local schools that have predominantly Latino enrollment. This mutually beneficial relationship helps college students improve their communication skills in Spanish while rendering a service to the Latino community through tutoring and mentoring programs, along with cultural presentations …

Fencing Off Love/ Feeding Off Love: Men In Love And The Women They Distrust In Machado De Assis's Ressurreição And Dom Casmurro, Diana Anselmo-Sequeira

Diana Anselmo-Sequeira

The Importance Of Feedback And Reinforcement In Computer Assisted Language Learning, Kerwin A. Livingstone May 2012

The Importance Of Feedback And Reinforcement In Computer Assisted Language Learning, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

A major focus of research in Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) has been the identification and implementation of Feedback Strategies that facilitate student learning. Much of this research has been carried out on procedural skills teaching systems in areas such as algebra, physics or computer programming. Nonetheless, very little emphasis has been placed on studies and research on these types of strategies for language learning (Intelligent Tutoring Systems for Foreign Language). This article is an attempt to clearly establish the importance and necessity of feedback and reinforcement in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). A brief description will be given about CALL, …

Gender And Heritage Spanish Bilingual Grammars: A Study Of Code-Mixed Determiner Phrases And Copula Constructions, Elena Valenzuela, Ana Faure, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo, Ewelina Barski, Yolanda Pangtay, Adriana Diez Feb 2012

Gender And Heritage Spanish Bilingual Grammars: A Study Of Code-Mixed Determiner Phrases And Copula Constructions, Elena Valenzuela, Ana Faure, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo, Ewelina Barski, Yolanda Pangtay, Adriana Diez

Alma P Ramirez-Trujillo

There has been a growing interest in the examination of the steady state of simultaneous bilinguals. An understanding of what leads to the possible weaknesses in the grammar of early bilinguals can contribute to our understanding of the possible causes of the apparent characteristic ‘failures’ in second language acquisition (Montrul 2008). Spanish has a gender feature for nouns (Carroll 1989) and gender agreement for determiners and adjectives. Problems with the acquisition of gender marking on the noun and/or with gender agreement are well-known in the L2 literature (Hawkins 1998; Fernández–Garcia 1999; Franceschina 2001; Bruhn de Garavito and White 2002; White …

Exile And Identity In Autobiographies Of Twentieth-Century Spanish Women, Karla Zepeda Dec 2011

Exile And Identity In Autobiographies Of Twentieth-Century Spanish Women, Karla Zepeda

Karla P Zepeda

In Exile and Identity in Autobiographies of Twentieth-Century Spanish Women, Karla P. Zepeda studies the experience of exile and its effects on identity in three autobiographies: In Place of Splendor by Constancia de la Mora, Memoria de la melancolía by María Teresa León, and Seis años de mi vida by Federica Montseny. These three prominent Spanish women of the Second Republic became exiles at the conclusion of the Spanish Civil War due to the onset of the Francisco Franco regime. The political expatriation caused their relocation into various countries: the United States, France, Argentina, and Italy. The repositioning initiated a …

Contributions Of Medieval Food Manuals To Spain’S Culinary Heritage, Carolyn Nadeau Dec 2011

Contributions Of Medieval Food Manuals To Spain’S Culinary Heritage, Carolyn Nadeau

Carolyn A Nadeau

This article examines and compares the contributions of five Medieval Muslim and Christian recipe manuscripts to Spain‘s culinary history. Specifically, it explores notions of authorship and implied reader; the works ‘structures and shared culinary lexicon; strategies of imitation from vague, shared cultural tastes to exact ―borrowings‖ of recipes; and diverse narrative voices that express pride, satisfaction or even disappointment in describing different recipes. In addition, it examines unique features that contribute to Spain‘s culinary history. For example, it points to Jewish contributions as recorded in the Kitab al-tabij, unique bread recipes from the Fadalat found in no other medieval …

“What Else Happened In The Early Modern Kitchen? Reading Celestina’S Kitchen Through The Manual De Mugeres.”, Carolyn Nadeau

Carolyn A Nadeau

Using both Fernando de Rojas’ Celestina and the anonymous Manual de mugeres en el qual se contienen muchas y diversas reçeutas muy buenas as primary sources, this article explores products women regularly prepared in their domestic space in addition to daily meals. Specifically, it examines items that deal directly with cosmetics for the skin, aromatics, products for the hair and mouth, and remedies for common ailments, including relief for women after childbirth. Responding to the research of Peter Russell and others on Celestina’s witchcraft and drawing from that of Alicia Martínez Crespo and Jesús Terrón González on cosmetics and concepts …

They Need Nothing: Hispanic-Asian Encounters Of The Colonial Period., Robert Ellis

Robert Ellis

The first comprehensive study of Spanish writings on East and Southeast Asia from the Spanish colonial period, They Need Nothing draws attention to many essential but understudied Spanish-language texts from this era. Robert Richmond Ellis provides an engaging, interdisciplinary examination of how these writings depict Asia and Asians as both similar to and different from Europe and Europeans, and details how East and Southeast Asians reacted to the Spanish presence in Asia.

They Need Nothing highlights texts related to Japan, China, Cambodia, and the Philippines, beginning with Francis Xavier's observations of Japan in the mid-sixteenth century and ending with José …

Sacrificio, Violencia Y Nación En Lituma En Los Andes De Mario Vargas Llosa, Cesar Valverde

Cesar Valverde

This paper addresses gender, nation and sacrifice as central elements in Lituma en los Andes (1993), a novel published by Mario Vargas Llosa after he ran unsuccessfully for the Peruvian presidency. The book presents a number of masculine models that are either inadequate, romanticized or brutal and sets them against a backdrop of a Peru deep in the economic and physical violence of war against the Maoist guerrillas of Sendero Luminoso, a Peru forced to live in a “superstitious and obscurantist cultural fog” because of its indigenous past. My study shows how the narrow worldview of the protagonist is challenged …

Merengue, Lujuria Y Violencia: El Espectáculo De La Barbarie En El Imaginario De La Nación Dominicana, Medar Serrata

Medar Serrata

This essay has two purposes. The first is to analyze the representation of popular music in the Dominican Republic since the mid-nineteenth century to the 1930s. The second is to explore the incorporation and subversion of the notion of merengue as a symbol of "barbarism" in the works of the Dominican writer Ramón Marrero Aristy.

Acquisition Of The Non-Generic Definite Article By Spanish Learners Of English As A Foreign Language, Christina Isabelli, Rachel Slough Dec 2011

Acquisition Of The Non-Generic Definite Article By Spanish Learners Of English As A Foreign Language, Christina Isabelli, Rachel Slough

This study explains the acquisition of the non-generic uses of the English definite article the by L2 learners. Chilean university students completed a questionnaire containing deleted obligatory uses of the. in all, four identified categories showed to have different accuracy rates. Of the four categories, the one most similar to the L1 was the least difficult to acquire while the most different resulted as the most difficult. This concurs with other research and can be explained by L1 rules that are transferred to the L2. The other two categories did not show the same acquisition rate as compared to previous …
