Mechanomyography; Lasers For Non-Invasive Quantification Of Muscle Recovery From Exercise Induced Fatigue, Nicholas Rosser, Darryl Mcandrew, Donald Iverson

Darryl J McAndrew

Muscle fatigue is a common clinical sign and possible precursor to musculoskeletal injury. Existing methods of detecting muscle fatigue qualify changes within muscle or across joints, but are expensive, invasive or difficult to use. A technique of mechanomyography utilising maximal percutaneous stimulation (known as the Muscle Displacement Laser {MDL}) is an easy non-invasive assessment tool, which may have considerable application in measuring muscle fatigue and determining recovery. Specifically, this study attempted to validate the MDL as a tool to measure muscle fatigue and determine the time-course of recovery from Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness in human biceps brachii muscle. Methods: …

The Effect Of Elbow Flexion Speed And Partial Limb Occlusion On Emg Activity, John Sampson, Herbert Groeller, Darryl Mcandrew, R Achttien, J Stege Aug 2014

The Effect Of Elbow Flexion Speed And Partial Limb Occlusion On Emg Activity, John Sampson, Herbert Groeller, Darryl Mcandrew, R Achttien, J Stege

Darryl J McAndrew

This investigation aimed to determine the neuromuscular response of the bicep brachii during heavy (6RM) dynamic resistance exercise performed to volitional exhaustion. Electromyographic (EMG) activity was compared in twelve male subjects performing dominant-limb elbow flexion exercise during four conditions: i) Explosive concentric and eccentric (SSC); ii) Explosive concentric, control eccentric (EC); iii) control (C); and iv) control with limb occlusion (CO) (110mmHg). CO and SSC are reported to increase motor unit activity when compared to control exercise (2 second flexion, 2 second extension). It was hypothesised that EMG activity will be higher in conditions of explosive exercise. Surface EMG activity …

University Of Wyoming Wool Laboratory, 1907-2012, David Kruger

David Delbert Kruger

The University of Wyoming Wool Laboratory operated on campus from 1907-2012, in which time the sheep and wool industry experienced great change. For over a century, the faculty of the Wool Lab carefully cataloged research associated with sheep and wool, accumulating a collection of over 1,000 individual titles, 10,000 bound journal articles, correspondence, equipment manuals, and data notebooks, and a set of 872 preserved wool samples dating from 1837. This collection, now housed at the Emmett D. Chisum Special Collections Library at the University of Wyoming, is thought to be one of the most unique and complete collections of sheep …

Wild Rides And Wildflowers: Philosophy And Botany With Bikes, Scott Abbott, Sam Rushforth Mar 2014

Wild Rides And Wildflowers: Philosophy And Botany With Bikes, Scott Abbott, Sam Rushforth

Scott Abbott

This book bears only passing resemblance to any book we have read to date. We hope it is comical, perhaps in ways that will remind readers of NPR’s “Car Talk,” where listeners share the good natured and sometimes acidic banter between brothers who also know a lot about cars. We hope it is moving, not in the extended ways Terry Tempest Williams often achieves, but through surprising comments and stories that accompany the bike rides and that, over the course of four years, add up to a larger picture. We hope it is informative, not in the comprehensive way John …

A Coastal Companion: A Year In The Gulf Of Maine, From Cape Cod To Canada, Catherine Schmitt Mar 2014

A Coastal Companion: A Year In The Gulf Of Maine, From Cape Cod To Canada, Catherine Schmitt

Catherine Schmitt

A Coastal Companion is a journey through the year in the Gulf of Maine and its watershed, which includes land from eastern Massachusetts to southwestern Nova Scotia. A chronicle of changes through the seasons both above and within the sea, A Coastal Companion follows the arrival and departure of migrating shorebirds in spring and fall, schools of fish as they move in and out of our region, and the natural cycles of our bays, rivers, marshes, and coastal forests. Part field guide, part almanac, the book also highlights writers, artists, and scientists who have chosen the Gulf of Maine as …
