Kurt Tucholsky: Left-Wing Intellectual And Politically-Engaged Journalist, David Johnson
Kurt Tucholsky: Left-Wing Intellectual And Politically-Engaged Journalist, David Johnson
Anthós Journal (1990-1996)
Critics of intellectuals have focused on the naive idealism of intellectuals and their tendency to withdraw from the political theater, instead concentrating on their respective specialties. Tucholsky did not fit into this group of intellectuals, as he was an active participant in the political debates of the day. He polemicized, satirized and criticized. He wrote poems and cabarets. When he saw a theme which needed to be addressed, he tackled it; often many times. He focused on real issues. His methods of satire and criticism were purposefully used to highlight the real problems faced by Germany. Tucholsky may have not …
Socrates' Embassy To Cratylus, Jason Lohr
Socrates' Embassy To Cratylus, Jason Lohr
Anthós Journal (1990-1996)
Plato, in the Cratylus, promotes truth as the principal men should aspire to. Socrates beckons us to, by example, smash the dialogue in search for meaning. In doing so; one cannot be sure if one has exited through the same door one has entered or not. It is certain, however, that Socrates would have approved of the search for Plato's truth.
Language Typology And Reconstruction: The Prenasalized Stops Of Kisi, George Tucker Childs
Language Typology And Reconstruction: The Prenasalized Stops Of Kisi, George Tucker Childs
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The findings of language typologists can contribute to understanding synchronic variation where no diachronic facts are available. By establishing what happens universally, one can extrapolate as to the past and perhaps as to the future of a language on the basis of synchronic evidence. One approach within such a framework concentrates on a typologically unusual or marked feature on the assumption that its derivation may be established from less highly marked features. This paper discusses the typologically unusual prenasalized stops of Kisi, a Mel language belonging to the Southern Branch of (West) Atlantic. The approach adopted here is based on …

A Taxonomy Of Types Of Uncertainty, Byrne Elliot Lovell
A Taxonomy Of Types Of Uncertainty, Byrne Elliot Lovell
Dissertations and Theses
This study considers an expanded meaning of "uncertainty" as it affects decision-makers. The definition adopted is based on a decision-maker who is uncertain, i.e. aware of the insufficiency of her knowledge for the purpose of rationally determining which option to choose. A taxonomy of uncertainties is developed from this definition. The first stage is a Generalized Decision Model, which expands on a standard decision model often assumed in technical works by allowing uncertainty over components of the model that are assumed to be perfectly known in the standard model. These additional potential "subjects" of uncertainty include the feasibility of options, …
A Study Of Two Attempts By President Plutarco ElíAs Calles To Establish A National Church In Mexico, Roger David Gouran
A Study Of Two Attempts By President Plutarco ElíAs Calles To Establish A National Church In Mexico, Roger David Gouran
Dissertations and Theses
In the one-hundred years between 1810 and 1926 there were many civil wars in Mexico. The last of these wars. La Cristiada, was not fought, as were the previous civil wars, by groups seeking political control of Mexico. Rather, the genesis of this war was a question of who would control the Church in Mexico. The war began when President Plutarco Elias Calles attempted to enforce rigorously certain articles of the Constitution of 1917 as well as two laws which he promulgated. If Calles had succeeded, he would, in fact, have created a church in Mexico controlled by the federal …

Learning Work In The Esl Classroom : An Evaluation Of Textbooks Designed To Teach Esl In The Workplace, Amy Taylor-Henry
Learning Work In The Esl Classroom : An Evaluation Of Textbooks Designed To Teach Esl In The Workplace, Amy Taylor-Henry
Dissertations and Theses
A growing number of American businesses are offering ESL courses at the work site; likewise, more and more textbooks designed specifically for teaching ESL in the Workplace (EWP), are being written and published. The need for an evaluation of these new texts with regard to current teaching methodology, the particularities of EWP, and the social implications of EWP is a vital one. A good EWP text, besides serving as a guide and resource for learners, can also facilitate intercultural understanding, increase awareness of workers' rights and unions, and promote participation in training programs for job flexibility and promotion. Most importantly, …
