Guy Lockwood (1870-1947) of Michigan was an American cartoonist and political activist, advocating for socialism. Lockwood and his friend Grant Walt Wallace created the company Wallace & Lockwood in 1891 which offered correspondence courses in penmanship and illustrations out of Lincoln, Nebraska, which was the first business of its kind. Both of the men were teachers at Western Normal College, also in Lincoln. Wallace left the company and Lockwood moved the company to Omaha by 1896. Jefferson Davis Mummert (1933-1993) was the son of Lysle Mummert (1903-1945) and Gertrude Robinson VanHercke (1905-1981). Jefferson D. Mummert attended high school in Pleasanton, Kansas, and later studied at the Kansas State College of Pittsburg (later Pittsburg State University), receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education (1960) and, later, a Master of Science in Mathematics. Ron Heilman (1950-2009) grew up near Wichita, Kansas. During his formative years he developed an interest in art and design. During a trip to New York City, the Fifth Avenue retailing, 7th Avenue couture, and Broadway inspired him to pursue designing as a vocation. Ron graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1972 with a BA in Theater, and later received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Costume Design from Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania. John Honstead was born in Van Wert, Ohio, October 1851. He became proficient in carpentry and by the age of 19 was teaching the trade. Honstead came to Neosho County, Kansas in 1879 where he worked as a carpenter and farmed. A few years later, he moved to Moran, Kansas and became a contractor and builder, building the schoolhouse, businesses houses, and residences. The one-volume memoir was handwritten, from 1903 to 1917, by David Stamm, and is a biographical sketch of his life, family history, and hardships. There are also three photographs of Stamm, including one with his wife, Catherine.

David Stamm was born December 22, 1837 in Salt Creek Township, Holmes County, Ohio, to John and Anna Elizabeth Germann Stamm. When he was five years old, the family moved to Van Wert County, Ohio. A collection of minutes, registries, historical notes, and photographs of the First Presbyterian and the United Presbyterian Churches of Pittsburg, Kansas.

In the early days of Pittsburg, Kansas, there were two Presbyterian Churches. While both were technically First United Presbyterian Churches, one was locally called the First Church and the other was called the United Presbyterian (UP) Church. The two churches, despite being the same denomination, were different in organization, style, and heritage. The First United Presbyterian Church was started on March 12, 1879. The first full-time minister was Reverend Francis Symmes who served from 1883 to 1885. The church …

The first draft of this guide was composed during the Pittsburg State University Tilford READ activity in the Fall of 2020.
