Bridging General Education And The Business Discipline: Surfacing Central Themes Through A Core Course, Jennifer Dose Feb 2019

Bridging General Education And The Business Discipline: Surfacing Central Themes Through A Core Course, Jennifer Dose

Business Educator Scholarship

General education and business major courses often follow parallel paths with little intersection or appreciation of the other. Students benefit, however, by seeing key themes and skills linked to both general education and specialized disciplinary courses. Giving specific attention to Christian institutions, this paper argues for more intentional connections between these two parts of the curriculum, highlighting their common ideals of shared learning, shared connections as human beings, practical skills, institutional distinctiveness, and integration. One strategy to overcome the bifurcation of general education and business curricula has been to ground institutional distinctives within a core course experience, which can then …

Review: M.B.B. Biskupski, The United States And The Rebirth Of Poland, 1914-1918, Robin Lauermann Jan 2019

Review: M.B.B. Biskupski, The United States And The Rebirth Of Poland, 1914-1918, Robin Lauermann

Educator Scholarship

By the turn of the 20th century, a significant wave of immigrants from Poland had fled their homeland as it marked over one hundred years under partition rule by the Austro-Hungarian, German and Russian empires. As they resettled in diaspora, including a significant number in the United States, they formed a significant base of political activity to influence other nations’ foreign policies In this scrupulously detailed work, M.B.B. Biskupski characterizes the activities by various civic associations of Polonia and their leaders to raise American consciousness, first for relief and military support of the war-ravaged lands of Poland and then for …

Enslaved Imaginations: The [Pelagian] Heresy Of Market Fundamentalism And Christian Moral Discernment, Richard Crane Jan 2019

Enslaved Imaginations: The [Pelagian] Heresy Of Market Fundamentalism And Christian Moral Discernment, Richard Crane

Biblical, Religious, & Philosophical Studies Educator Scholarship

In many respects, the US economy bears little resemblance to a genuine free market system. The economic policy-making process has been captured by powerful interests, resulting in regressive arrangements that redistribute wealth upward. The inequality generated is sanctioned in popular discourse by a confusing of ideal free markets with real world markets. “Market fundamentalism” imagines the market as self-regulating, governed by economic laws inscribed into the natural order, and thus a free and fair system. This rhetoric disguises how the system’s structure favors some at the expense of others.

Evaluating market fundamentalism with a theological lens reveals resemblances to the …

Unruly Rhetorics: Protest, Persuasion, And Publics, Danny Rodriguez Jan 2019

Unruly Rhetorics: Protest, Persuasion, And Publics, Danny Rodriguez

Language, Literature & Writing Educator Scholarship

This edited collection of fifteen essays grapples with the potential value and ramifications of unruliness as a rhetorical method for efficient activism. Jonathan Alexander and Susan C. Jarrett propose “that ‘unruly’ might be one word that, while hardly totalizing or encompassing all political striving, marks how speech, action, and bodies coalesce in time and space, enacting the works of politics in the ways .. . rhetorical critics have imagined” (13). Asserting that the potential reception of unruliness hinges primarily on the various definitions of democracy, they suggest that protests, uncivility, and unruliness are not necessarily antithetical to democracy but rather …

Toward A Theory Of Biblical Leadership, Andrew Babyak Sep 2018

Toward A Theory Of Biblical Leadership, Andrew Babyak

Business Educator Scholarship

The Faith at Work Movement started in the 1980s to address the needs of Christians who felt like their life was being segmented between their work and faith (Miller, 2003). As Christians have been searching for meaning at work, they have accepted servant leadership as the ideal form of leadership because it has been taught as the leadership of Jesus (Niewold, 2007). In this paper, an ideological exegesis of Luke 9:57-62 reveals that the true leadership of Jesus does not fit into the construct of servant leadership. As a result of the ideological exegesis, this paper proposes a new theory …

Practicing Faith & Reconciliation Through Friendship: Remembering Charles Freer Andrews (1871-1940), Bernardo Michael, Saramma Michael Jan 2018

Practicing Faith & Reconciliation Through Friendship: Remembering Charles Freer Andrews (1871-1940), Bernardo Michael, Saramma Michael

History Educator Scholarship

The idea of friendship projects a range of timeless human emotions and values, some prized and others abhorrent viz. love, trust, compassion, reconciliation, betrayal, and loss. Throughout human experience, and across cultures, this theme of friendship has found expression in historical accounts, literature, poetry, religion, ritual, and performance. The men and women who forged these ties of friendship had to cross differences of culture, ethnicity, caste, class, race, nation, religion, and gender in order to build relationships that were based on dialogue, mutual trust and respect. One could argue that the human capacity to build friendships holds great promise in …

For Such A Time And Place As This: Christian Higher Education For The Common Good, Cynthia Wells Jan 2018

For Such A Time And Place As This: Christian Higher Education For The Common Good, Cynthia Wells

Higher Education Faculty Scholarship

One might argue that this is not a wise time to raise queries of the common good for Christian higher education. Our in-boxes and newsfeeds provide persistent reminders of the crises facing higher education today, many of which uniquely impact Christian colleges and universities. A crisis of the humanities, as students turn away from areas of study traditionally associated with the liberal arts. A crisis of cost, as independent colleges wrestle with an unsustainable financial model and an increasingly skeptical constituency. An enrollment crisis amid declines in the number of high school graduates, especially in the northeast and midwest. Colleges …

Biblical Leadership At Work Scale Development, Andrew Babyak Apr 2017

Biblical Leadership At Work Scale Development, Andrew Babyak

Business Educator Scholarship

The faith at work movement began in the 1980s (Miller, 2007) and has been growing at a fast pace in recent years, but most of the work done in these fields has been religion neutral. Scholars have postulated that leadership based on the Bible would be divisive and produce negative results for the organization, but no studies have been performed to actually support those assertions (Hicks, 2002). The purpose of this study was to develop a new theory of biblical leadership and a scale that may be used to study it. A thorough review of previous research on leadership and …

“We Don't Talk About That Here": Teachers, Religion, Public Elementary Schools And The Embodiment Of Silence, A Binational United States And Israel Study, Tina Keller, Amy Camardese, Randa Abbas Jan 2017

“We Don't Talk About That Here": Teachers, Religion, Public Elementary Schools And The Embodiment Of Silence, A Binational United States And Israel Study, Tina Keller, Amy Camardese, Randa Abbas

Faculty Educator Scholarship

Globally religious diversity is on the rise yet the place of religion in public schools is often heatedly debated. This study examined the experiences of fifth graders in regards to religion in public schools in the United States and Israel. The juxtaposition of diverse countries and school settings opens the dialogue to examine how children and their teachers perceive the impact of religion while in school. The findings suggest that the impact of minority status, school curriculum, and the political and geographical contexts of schools impact the ways that religion is conceptualized in public elementary schools. In addition, the uniquenesses …

Janice Holt Giles And The "White Caps” Of Kentucky, Michael R. Brown Dec 2016

Janice Holt Giles And The "White Caps” Of Kentucky, Michael R. Brown

Library Staff Presentations & Publications

Janice Holt Giles (1905-1979) has more to say about the Brethren in Christ than any other novelist or popular writer;' in fact, she stands alone. Her 25 books, written from 1950 to 1975, sold four million copies in her lifetime, and some remain in print and have recently attracted renewed interest. Primarily noted for her historical fiction about the Western frontier, she is also noted for novels and memoirs set in her adopted state of Kentucky. Of these, four describe or characterize the Brethren in Christ at varying length and another three mention or make allusions to them. One novel, …

Nonviolent Action: What Christian Ethics Demands But Most Christians Have Never Really Tried (Review), Richard Crane

Biblical, Religious, & Philosophical Studies Educator Scholarship

In this book, Ron Sider breaks no new scholarly ground. But that was not his purpose. Sider’s purpose is to motivate his intended audience—Christian leaders of churches, denominations, parachurch bodies, and other ecclesial groups—to make a bold and sustained commitment to nonviolent activism on a grand scale.

Method, Macintyre, And Pedagogy: Inviting Students To Participate In Theology As A Living Conversation, Richard Crane Jul 2016

Method, Macintyre, And Pedagogy: Inviting Students To Participate In Theology As A Living Conversation, Richard Crane

Bible & Religion Educator Scholarship

Teaching theology within academic institutions with confessional commitments and theologically conservative students requires holding together, in creative tension, two pedagogical goals. The challenge is to promote rigorous academic inquiry by encouraging student openness to engagement with perspectives that challenge their own beliefs while simultaneously constructing a course that is experienced as a safe space where students do not feel their personal faith is under attack. This essay presents the argument that a methodological framework for introductory theology courses informed by Alasdair MacIntyre's reflections on the nature of living traditions holds great promise for achieving these objectives. The essay will also …

A Distinctive Vision For The Liberal Arts: General Education And The Flourishing Of Christian Higher Education, Cynthia Wells Jan 2016

A Distinctive Vision For The Liberal Arts: General Education And The Flourishing Of Christian Higher Education, Cynthia Wells

Higher Education Faculty Scholarship

This article argues that a coherent and inspired general education program, infused with a deliberate vision of the liberal arts, is crucial to the flourishing of Christian higher education. This article begins by describing the context and status of general education, emphasizing how this element of the educational program falls short in embodying a distinctive mission of Christian higher education. This article then contends that a vibrant vision of general education will be grounded in particular aspects of a liberal arts education that fulfill crucial outcomes of the Christian university, specifically cultivating the formal virtues and fostering meaning and purpose. …

A Christian Perspective Of An Ojibwe Sweat For Women, Carol Z.A. Mcginnis, Julie Ogemaanungokwe Smith

Counseling Educator Scholarship

It is a rare privilege to be invited to participate in a Native American Ojibwe sweat and I was fortunate to experience this as an all-female event with other counselors from across the US. As a pastoral counselor who comes from a Methodist Christian worldview, I thought it may be helpful to share my perspective with other counselors who may work with Native American clients who engage in this type of religious experience. Oftentimes we have difficulty in finding “common ground” from which to connect with clients from different cultures, and this experience helped me to see how our shared …

A Teaching Strategy For A Christian Virtual Environment, Andrew Babyak

Business Educator Scholarship

The current landscape in education is changing rapidly as online learning programs are experiencing great growth. As online learning grows, many professors and students are entering into new learning environments for the first time. While online learning has proven to be successful in many cases, it is not a journey upon which Christian professors or students should begin without some preparation. This article articulates a basic Christian teaching strategy by providing recommendations for those who are entering the online environment for the first time or desire to improve their online teaching effectiveness. These principles and recommendations are presented so that …

Milton’S Inward Liberty: A Reading Of Christian Liberty From The Prose To Paradise Lost, By Filippo Falcone., Samuel Smith

English Faculty Scholarship

When this book arrived from the Milton Quarterly office, I nearly decided to return it with the afternoon mail after my first cursory look at it. That would have been a mistake. My initial response flouted the old cliché: don’t judge a book by its cover. The cover photo—misty woodland and mountain landscape with luminous autumn foliage, location unidentified, and the author’s name in cursive font under the subtitle—had me suspecting, and expecting, something more like a devotional book than a work of scholarship. And both the author and the publisher were utterly unknown to me (Falcone is an Italian …
