Bridging General Education And The Business Discipline: Surfacing Central Themes Through A Core Course, Jennifer Dose

General education and business major courses often follow parallel paths with little intersection or appreciation of the other. Students benefit, however, by seeing key themes and skills linked to both general education and specialized disciplinary courses. Giving specific attention to Christian institutions, this paper argues for more intentional connections between these two parts of the curriculum, highlighting their common ideals of shared learning, shared connections as human beings, practical skills, institutional distinctiveness, and integration. In many respects, the US economy bears little resemblance to a genuine free market system. The economic policy-making process has been captured by powerful interests, resulting in regressive arrangements that redistribute wealth upward. The inequality generated is sanctioned in popular discourse by a confusing of ideal free markets with real world markets. “Market fundamentalism” imagines the market as self-regulating, governed by economic laws inscribed into the natural order, and thus a free and fair system. This rhetoric disguises how the system’s structure favors some at the expense of others.

This edited collection of fifteen essays grapples with the potential value and ramifications of unruliness as a rhetorical method for efficient activism. Jonathan Alexander and Susan C. Jarrett propose “that ‘unruly’ might be one word that, while hardly totalizing or encompassing all political striving, marks how speech, action, and bodies coalesce in time and space, enacting the works of politics in the ways .. . rhetorical critics have imagined” (13). Asserting that the potential reception of unruliness hinges primarily on the various definitions of democracy, they suggest that protests, uncivility, and unruliness are not necessarily antithetical to democracy but rather …

The Faith at Work Movement started in the 1980s to address the needs of Christians who felt like their life was being segmented between their work and faith (Miller, 2003). As Christians have been searching for meaning at work, they have accepted servant leadership as the ideal form of leadership because it has been taught as the leadership of Jesus (Niewold, 2007). In this paper, an ideological exegesis of Luke 9:57-62 reveals that the true leadership of Jesus does not fit into the construct of servant leadership. The idea of friendship projects a range of timeless human emotions and values, some prized and others abhorrent viz. love, trust, compassion, reconciliation, betrayal, and loss. Throughout human experience, and across cultures, this theme of friendship has found expression in historical accounts, literature, poetry, religion, ritual, and performance. The men and women who forged these ties of friendship had to cross differences of culture, ethnicity, caste, class, race, nation, religion, and gender in order to build relationships that were based on dialogue, mutual trust and respect. Scholars have postulated that leadership based on the Bible would be divisive and produce negative results for the organization, but no studies have been performed to actually support those assertions (Hicks, 2002). Globally religious diversity is on the rise yet the place of religion in public schools is often heatedly debated. This study examined the experiences of fifth graders in regards to religion in public schools in the United States and Israel. The juxtaposition of diverse countries and school settings opens the dialogue to examine how children and their teachers perceive the impact of religion while in school. The findings suggest that the impact of minority status, school curriculum, and the political and geographical contexts of schools impact the ways that religion is conceptualized in public elementary schools. Janice Holt Giles (1905-1979) has more to say about the Brethren in Christ than any other novelist or popular writer;' in fact, she stands alone. Her 25 books, written from 1950 to 1975, sold four million copies in her lifetime, and some remain in print and have recently attracted renewed interest. Primarily noted for her historical fiction about the Western frontier, she is also noted for novels and memoirs set in her adopted state of Kentucky. Teaching theology within academic institutions with confessional commitments and theologically conservative students requires holding together, in creative tension, two pedagogical goals. The challenge is to promote rigorous academic inquiry by encouraging student openness to engagement with perspectives that challenge their own beliefs while simultaneously constructing a course that is experienced as a safe space where students do not feel their personal faith is under attack. When this book arrived from the Milton Quarterly office, I nearly decided to return it with the afternoon mail after my first cursory look at it. That would have been a mistake. My initial response flouted the old cliché: don’t judge a book by its cover. The cover photo—misty woodland and mountain landscape with luminous autumn foliage, location unidentified, and the author’s name in cursive font under the subtitle—had me suspecting, and expecting, something more like a devotional book than a work of scholarship.
