Truffle Cakes: A Family Tradition, Sam Haygood

ENGL 1101 Showcase

What looks to be an ordinary chocolate cake sits unassumingly on a plate, but as the spoon pushes in for the first bite, it cracks through the outer crust of the cake and unexpectedly sinks into the center. Something special is about to come. As the spoon pulls out, the cake appears to be almost melting off the edge, and the prospect of waiting to eat it seems near impossible. This is the experience of my family’s best special occasion dessert, the truffle cake.

Braedon's Day, Braedon Baker

ENGL 1101 Showcase

The sound of my 7:00 a.m. alarm brought me back to consciousness and out of my dreams. My mouth was parched, making my desire to fall right back asleep irrelevant. The water felt healing as it went down. I got up in a daze, struggling to find my way to the small orange dot indicating the light switch in my dorm room. A singular bulb illuminated the entire room, blinding me briefly. With my vision returned, I twisted off the top of the smooth glass container to obtain one of my morning supplements. Moringa to start, then comes the probiotics, …

So, I get up and reach for my phone to turn off this new soothing alarm. I scroll on my phone watching TikTok’s repeatedly for a while until the constant scrolling and different sounds gets annoying and I then play music by Feid to get ready. I make my way down three flights of stairs, walk out the University Village suites, and walk past …

An Ordinary Day Of Sheldon Jerome Downing Ii’S Life At Marietta High School, Sheldon Jerom Downing Ii

ENGL 1101 Showcase

I am jarred awake by the piercing mechanical sounds of a pinball rattling away in a pinball machine. Every few seconds, a flurry of concussive noises plays. As I face the ceiling, I try to ignore it, still tired after 5 inadequate hours of rest. I bargain with the consequences of just hitting the Stop button on my phone and retreating to the covers. Then I sigh when I realize that not only had I not checked how much time I had, but it was also hot. No, it was unbearably hot. The reality that spring was now summer and …

The Average Tuesday, Tucker Johnson

The numbers on the screen read that it was 8:30. Just a few moments ago I was awoken by a sudden alarm from my phone. I stared at the screen and a scowl formed on my face. I knew that my 8:00 alarm had not awoken me or if the 8:00 alarm even worked. Anyway, I unplugged my grey rectangle from its long, white charger. I sat up in my bed with my brown and orange blanket still covering me. I looked forward towards the wall.

The sun shines through my curtains, with its light waking me up from my sleep. The feeling of being able to wake up naturally through sunlight is something that I’m going to miss. Being awoken by an alarm and the greasiness and unpleasantness that comes with it is something I’m not looking forward to. The first thing I do when I wake up is grab my phone. I then check the group chat I have with my friends for making plans. I’m normally the one now that urges to make plans. This summer I’ve lived a carefree life that’s out …

As my alarm blares at 8:30 a.m. on a cold autumn morning, I groan and reluctantly open my eyes. My bed is entrapping me in its warmth, and the thought of getting up feels like a betrayal to my body. I look around my room and see a soft, golden hue as the sun peeks through the blinds. I lay in my bed contemplating, “Should I get up for class? Or should I go back to bed?” Just as I start to drift back to sleep, the roar of leaf blowers echoes outside. The ear-piercing sound cuts through the silence, …

Calisthenics is a form of strength training in which you master your body weight. Some examples are push-ups, sit ups, and pullups. Fountains should be the unofficial, official architectural feature of Kansas City. Some fountains are more prominent and grander than life, while others are simple. When I lived in Kansas City, I would always love to look for fountains and see their many variations in the city. I enjoyed seeing each fountain and how they related to the structures around them. Fountains are an essential feature within this city, and the decision to include fountains in different architectural structures adds character and a distinctive theme to Kansas City.

Puppy Love And [Information] Play: An Intersection Of Theatre, Queer Kink, And Consent, Emily Kitchens Dec 2023

Puppy Love And [Information] Play: An Intersection Of Theatre, Queer Kink, And Consent, Emily Kitchens

Faculty Articles

This note from the field centers on a nexus of queer kink subcultures and consent-based intimacy work in theatre. I report, investigate and wrangle with the process of incorporating queer kink aesthetics into the production of Love and Information by Caryl Churchill I directed at KSU February 2023. What I have learned and hope to demonstrate throughout the paper, is that queer kink subcultures are often paradigmatic examples of communities built on consent, and we as performing arts practitioners can more visibly expand the margins of our cultural competency dialogues to not only include them but look to them as …

Forbidden Temporalities: The Wayward Aesthetics Of Punchdrunk’S Sleep No More, Thomas Fish Aug 2022

Forbidden Temporalities: The Wayward Aesthetics Of Punchdrunk’S Sleep No More, Thomas Fish

Faculty Articles

Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More is an immersive theatrical adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Hitchcock’s Rebecca that has been staged in New York since 2011 with over 2000 performances. Sprawled over a hundred rooms within three intricately designed warehouses, the event offers a visceral exploration of a labyrinthine space and the potential for anonymous—even erotic—one-on-one encounters with a performer in the dark. This paper offers a new angle on Punchdrunk’s immersive style by considering the embodiment of temporality in performance and its concurrent aesthetic politics. Borrowing from queer theory’s temporal turn, it details how the company manipulates time in the space …

Social Media And The Demotic Turn In Africa's Media Ecology, Farooq Kperogi Jan 2022

Social Media And The Demotic Turn In Africa's Media Ecology, Farooq Kperogi

Faculty Articles

Social media platforms have exploded in the last decade and have emerged as the arenas for discursive democracy, sociality, and digital dissidence across Africa. This article historicizes and genealogizes the exponential, if slightly imperceptible but nonetheless phenomenal, growth, maturation, and spread of social media on a continent that had been described in the scholarly literature as the blackhole of informational capitalism. It argues that the progressive centrality of social media in the quotidian lives of Africans, which has invited consternation and censorship from many African governments and inspired precarity in the traditional media sphere, instantiates the materialization of the demotic …

Material Format Preference Of Music Faculty At Kennesaw State University, A. Carey Huddlestun

Historically, collection development has focused on what material to purchase. However, with the maturation of web-based music audio databases, web-based video databases, online music scores, electronic books and reference material, and commercial audio/visual streaming services, the format of material is also now an important collection consideration. Faced with difficult collection development decisions due to the Performing Arts Library’s (PAL) limited space being filled beyond capacity with physical material, PAL librarians at Kennesaw State University (KSU) sought to discover the material and format preference of music faculty. This was done to see if faculty would use digital material, requiring no physical …

The ‘Other’ In The Bowels Of The Hegemon: Us Media Portrayals Of Guam During The United States-North Korea Tensions.Pdf, Eduard Fabregat, Farooq Kperogi

Faculty Articles

This article explores how America’s mainline institutional media portrayed Guam, an unincorporated US territory in the Pacific Ocean that is home to important American military bases, in a time of heightened tensions between the United States and North Korea. Guamanians represent marginal racial ‘others’ who are nonetheless ensconced in a consequential part of the US military architecture. Using a combination of topic modelling and network analysis, our study analysed 2480 articles from 44 different mainstream newspapers in the United States between April 2017 and June 2018 in order to examine the contradictory depiction of an ‘other’ that is simultaneously foreign …

“Sharia Or Death”: The Mass Mediated Hegemonic Rhetoric Of Theocratic Populism In Nigeria’S Muslim North, Farooq Kperogi Jan 2020

“Sharia Or Death”: The Mass Mediated Hegemonic Rhetoric Of Theocratic Populism In Nigeria’S Muslim North, Farooq Kperogi

Faculty Articles

This paper explores the genealogy and contours of theocratic populism in Nigeria’s Muslim North from 1999 to2007. It examines the mass-mediated rhetorical articulations of Islamic theocratic populist politics in the region while laying bare its motivations in a religiously plural polity such as Nigeria. It argues that the introduction of Sharia laws in Nigeria’s Muslim majority northern states was a populist response by a traumatized hegemonic power bloc in Nigerian politics — which had hitherto taken for granted its right to dominate the social and politicalspace —to regain its political and discursive high ground against an emergent, competing power bloc. …
