Drumbeats And Tides The Salvation Army Crestmont College A Better Model For Preparing Leaders In The Emerging Age, Raymond L. Peacock
Drumbeats And Tides The Salvation Army Crestmont College A Better Model For Preparing Leaders In The Emerging Age, Raymond L. Peacock
Doctor of Ministry
Christian higher education in general and Salvation Army higher education Vll specifically are undergoing a learning revolution. Most organizations in general and The Salvation Anny specifically are simultaneously experiencing a leadership revolution. Crestmont College was given two mandates in 2000 and a third mandate in 2002 to address these two revolutions. But what is it about learning and leadership that the mandates need to address? Moving towards connecting transformative learning with transfonnationalleadership development within the context of an institution and an organization requires sorting out the structure, strategic plmming, and linking the plan to implementation. The dissertation works itselfthrough these …

A History Of The Ordination Of Women In The Episcopal Church, And Its Effects On Anglican-Roman Catholic Dialog, Cynthia M. Reynolds
A History Of The Ordination Of Women In The Episcopal Church, And Its Effects On Anglican-Roman Catholic Dialog, Cynthia M. Reynolds
Doctor of Ministry
Our Lord Jesus Christ prayed that those who share in His calling "may become completely one" (John 17:23 NRSV). Unity is a major goal of many Christian denominations, both within those groups and with other churches. The second half of the twentieth century was an extremely active period of dialogue between the Anglican Communion and the Roman Catholic Church. However, the question of authority has been a significant roadblock in this quest for ecumenical recovery. Traditional faith practices in each church are determined by markedly different models for arriving at final decisions in matters of doctrine. By way of an …
Echoes Of Scripture In The Emmaus Road Encounter Of Luke 24:13-35, Gilbert A. Cloud
Echoes Of Scripture In The Emmaus Road Encounter Of Luke 24:13-35, Gilbert A. Cloud
Doctor of Ministry
The encounter between the risen Jesus and two disciples on the Emmaus Road in Luke 24: 13-35 offers rich textual interpretive possibilities when compared ·with the Bible overall. What model(s) or method(s) might the writer of the third gospel have employed to proclaim the presence of the risen Jesus? The method of textual and intertextual dialogue used to examine the Luke 24: 13-35 pericope is that of identifying echoes of Scripture. This thesis examines God's Word to point out a few of the many echoes of Scripture that contribute to the exegetical and hermeneutical process. Echoes of Scripture are reflections …

“Untiring Joys And Sorrows”: Yeats And The Sidhe, Kathleen A. Heininge
“Untiring Joys And Sorrows”: Yeats And The Sidhe, Kathleen A. Heininge
Faculty Publications - Department of English
Excerpt: "In popular culture, the idea of Irishness has long been associated with the idea of fairies and leprechauns. This association has been explored by scholars who treat the Sidhe—also known as the daoine maithe, or the “good people”—as either a sociological or a literary construct. Most often, the sociological con- struct is somewhat insidious and the literary construct tends to be romantic. Recently, Angela Bourke has explored how the folkloric understanding of the fairies may be used to explain the otherwise inexplicable—for instance, when hormonal changes that come about through puberty or menopause were explained by saying that …
Angling For Repose: Wallace Stegner And The De-Mythologizing Of The American West, Jennie A. Harrop
Angling For Repose: Wallace Stegner And The De-Mythologizing Of The American West, Jennie A. Harrop
Faculty Publications - Department of Professional Studies
When Wallace Stegner published his first book in 1937, a stereotypical Western novel invariably included a gun-slinging cowboy hero, a near-mythical gunfight at dusk, and a formulaic, predictable plot that rarely left readers unsure of who would prevail in the end. Stegner recognized the limitations of such archetypal assumptions and sought to achieve something different with his work. In this paper, I argue that Wallace Stegner asked the nuanced questions necessary to further this nation’s understanding of western archetypes and, as a result, to begin to debunk the misleading mythologies of the American West.
In this study, I look first …

Teaching History As Creational Development, Paul Otto
Teaching History As Creational Development, Paul Otto
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
My object in this article is to share ways that my faith commitments are mamfest m my teaching of history It should be made clear from the outset that I currently teach, and have taught, at explicitly faith-based institutions—George Fox University and Dordt College—and this fact doubtless shapes what I have done m my classes, and how I have done it First, I will briefly summarize my understanding of history m terms of creational development and the exercise of human cultural formative power and its results Then I will share a few ways my pedagogy reflects this understanding or is …
James Wilson: Presbyterian, Anglican, Thomist, Or Deist?: Does It Matter? (Chapter 7 Of The Founders On God And Government), Mark Hall
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
Excerpt: "James Wilson is buried in America's Westminster Abby-Christ Church, Philadelphia. This Anglican church is only blocks away from the First Presbyterian church in Philadelphia, where Wilson rented a pew until the end of his life. Some scholars report that Wilson joined the Anglican Communion in 1778, perhaps at the behest of one his best friends, William White, the first Anglican bishop of Philadelphia. Others claim he that never abandoned the Presbyterianism of his native Scotland. Still others pay no attention to his denominational commitments, arguing that he was actually a Thornist or a deist. Finally, some scholars say nothing …
James Wilson's Law Lectures, Mark David Hall
James Wilson's Law Lectures, Mark David Hall
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
Excerpt: "A major problem faced by students of political theory, philosophy, or law in the founding era is that many of America's intellectual leaders did not write systematic essays or books. Accordingly, scholars often have to reconstruct their subjects' thoughts based on their actions, contributions to public debates (e.g., speeches in conventions and newspaper articles), and private correspondence. Works like Jefferson's Notes on Virginia, Adams's Thoughts on Government, and The Federalist Papers are partial exceptions to this rule, and scholars have made good use of them. Perhaps the clearest exception to the rule, however, is James Wilson's series of law …
Columba And Spiritual Proximity, Alexander Rolfe
Columba And Spiritual Proximity, Alexander Rolfe
Faculty Publications - George Fox University Libraries
This essay argues that nearness to other monks is a dominant theme in Adomnan's Life of St. Columba. Spiritual proximity is of much greater concern in early Irish monasticism than in Benedictine or Pachomian monasticism, even though the Irish are noted for lonely peregrinatio.
