A History Of The Kentucky Mountain Mission Work Of The Evangelical United Brethren Church, David W. Weinert May 1959

A History Of The Kentucky Mountain Mission Work Of The Evangelical United Brethren Church, David W. Weinert

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Throughout its history, the Evangelical Church has always been concerned for the underprivileged and unreached. Through a comprehensive survey of the needs of the mountains of Kentucky, it was decided that this was a logical place to do missionary service. The underprivileged of the mountains of Kentucky had long since been neglected. The Evangelical Church accepted that area to further its Missionary enterprises.

This paper was written with three objectives in view. First, the writer desired a better understanding of the work which is part of the missionary outreach of his denomination. Secondly, the writer hopes some day to become …

The Study Of The Problem Of Teaching Christian Moral Behavior, Lester A. Wetzstein May 1959

The Study Of The Problem Of Teaching Christian Moral Behavior, Lester A. Wetzstein

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Christian living from its inception has been challenging by the relationship between learning and moral living. The problem of this study was involved with a statement of the principles of Christian Moral Behavior and the implementation of those principles in the life activity or behavior of the individual. It was the contention of the author that the teaching process has not attained its ultimate objective until the life has been reoriented.

A Critical And Comparative Analysis Of John Calvin's And The Early Friends' Doctrine Of The Word Of God, Peter R. Schuler May 1959

A Critical And Comparative Analysis Of John Calvin's And The Early Friends' Doctrine Of The Word Of God, Peter R. Schuler

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The question has been raised since the inception of the Friends or Quaker movement, "What position do the Friends hold in reference to a basis of authority for their proposed and propounded doctrines?" This basis of authority was first questioned by various religious leaders of the day when George Fox went about preaching against the cold, dead, formalism of the churches in England, and remains a matter of some debate today.

Since the beginning of the Friends movement, it has held the Bible in great reverence and has used it as a basis of their teaching. Other groups, too, considered …

A Comparative Study Of Pauline And Johannine Conception Of Sin, Homer C. Snyder May 1959

A Comparative Study Of Pauline And Johannine Conception Of Sin, Homer C. Snyder

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The Bible as a whole establishes the doctrine of sin. The New Testament doctrine of sin is developed on the foundation of the Old Testament doctrine of sin. Paul and John speak particularly on the doctrine of sin as a whole. So a study of their doctrine of sin would contribute to a total Biblical understanding. The problem of this study is the Biblical doctrine of sin limited to the New Testament writers, John and Paul, as they speak of the doctrine of sin, in relation to the doctrine of sin as a whole. Since the problem concerns the doctrine …

The Philosophies And Procedures In Church Camps, David G. White May 1959

The Philosophies And Procedures In Church Camps, David G. White

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The lack of uniformity exists in contemporary American Protestant summer camp programs. These programs are the products of varying church camp philosophies and procedures. A rather complex pattern of criteria has arisen to differentiate these camp programs. For example, some authorities suggest that a church camp exists only when a majority of its activities are conducted in the out-of-doors, and when such is not the case, a camp should be called a conference. It was the purpose of this research to define and clarify the philosophies and procedures used in contemporary American Protestant summer church camps.

There were three basic …

A Proposed Program Of Local Sunday School Administration In The Evangelical Methodist Church, George E. Petersen May 1959

A Proposed Program Of Local Sunday School Administration In The Evangelical Methodist Church, George E. Petersen

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The Evangelical Methodist Church is a very young denomination. It was organized by a small group of laymen and ministers in Memphis, Tennessee, on May 9, 1946. It came into being with the conviction to preserve the doctrines of Methodism and be an evangelical witness in the world. Under the blessing of God she has grown steadily. There are Churches and Sunday Schools scattered across the United States, many of them struggling for want of administrative helps with a denominational emphasis. The demands upon the denominational leaders have made it impossible for them to write the material which is needed …

A Philosophy Of Religious Authority, G. Richard Powell May 1959

A Philosophy Of Religious Authority, G. Richard Powell

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The object of this study is to explore the philosophical basis of religious authority. The intent is to set forth an apology for the pre-eminence of the Christian faith according to the popularly-designated "evangelical" interpretation. There is recognized in the oft-repeated usage of the term "evangelical" within ecclesiastical circles a certain ambiguity of understanding. The purpose of its employment here is to establish a working basis with the intention that particular distinctions will become apparent in the text of the study.

A Critique Of Adult Christian Education, Paul Kuhn May 1959

A Critique Of Adult Christian Education, Paul Kuhn

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Until a few years ago the age group known as young adults was a neglected area in Christian Education. Today there is an increased awareness and interest in the need for adequate young adult Christian Education in the local church.

The distinctive mark of the American society is the young married couple and its family. A glance at the many advertisements shows that they are keyed to young adults. But the church, until very recently, has made little difference in the grading of adults. Because the interests and needs of adults are so widespread young adults often feel that there …

An Analytical Examination Of Contemporary Missionary Motives Objectives And Methods, Donald L. Jeter May 1959

An Analytical Examination Of Contemporary Missionary Motives Objectives And Methods, Donald L. Jeter

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Christianity has been a missionary religion from New Testament times. It has claimed to be a religion unique from all other religions of the world because it has God's only revelation of the answer to the spiritual needs of mankind, and because of this claim to uniqueness it has been a proselyting religion. In recent years there have been some from within the ranks of Christianity who have not been too sure whether the missionary imperative is valid today. They feel that missions should be curtailed if not discarded because of the lack of a motive that is unique. Not …

A New Inductive Study Of The First Epistles Of John, Gary M. Higbee May 1959

A New Inductive Study Of The First Epistles Of John, Gary M. Higbee

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

It is the never-ending task of Christian scholarship to interpret the sacred Scriptures in the light of an increasing understanding of the situation contemporary to their writing. The task is attempted anew in each generation, and no single pronouncement upon a given book is accepted as final. The men of each generation desire also to interpret the Scriptures so that they speak relevantly to their own day. Such is the task of this study.

A New Testament Study Of The Charisma, Donald E. Everson May 1959

A New Testament Study Of The Charisma, Donald E. Everson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The Day of Pentecost was the beginning of the charismata or spiritual gifts. This was the day that had been looked forward to for hundreds of years, the day that God poured out His Spirit on all flesh as He had done in a measure for His holy prophets. The disciples, at Jesus command, had done many wondrous signs and miracles but the power to do these things was given to them only for a season. Now the Holy Spirit was to abide in the Church forever.

A number of the charismata were demonstrated on that first day and those …

A Study Of Paul's Interpretation Of The Old Testament With Particular Reference To His Use Of Isaiah In The Letter To The Romans, James A. Field

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

One of the most obvious characteristics of the New Testament which greets the eyes of even the casual reader is its great dependence upon the Old Testament. Words, phrases, topics, personalities, and events from the Old Testament are carried forward into the New on almost every one of its pages. It has often been stated that neither of the Testaments can be understood apart from the other. Centuries ago Augustine declared that, "The New Testament lies hidden in the Old, and the Old is made plain in the New."

The dependence of the New Testament upon the Old is especially …

A Proposed Program Of Teacher Training For Friends, Howard E. Harmon

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

One of the greatest challenges that the church faces today comes from within. When the average Christian thinks of the challenges facing the church, his mind generally thinks of the various needs connected with foreign missions, home missions, church extensions, orphanages, Sunday school activities, young people's work, denominations' special social work, or evangelism. Each of these areas carries its special challenge in its own right, but there is a problem within every church that must be met if the church is to adequately carry on these numerous activities.

A Comparative Study Of Progressive Education With Contemporary Religious Education, Melvin N. Olson Apr 1959

A Comparative Study Of Progressive Education With Contemporary Religious Education, Melvin N. Olson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

During this writer's years spent in the several areas of seminary study, a growing interest has developed concerning the basic philosophical structure of education, whether secular or religious. A realization has grown upon this writer that no educational viewpoint or system developed without being based upon some particular philosophy. This was evidenced by both secular and religious systems of education.

A class in "History of Christian Education," and limited study on the history of progressive education brought to this writers focused attention the fact that basic presuppositions in an educational theory profoundly effect the final outcome. With this in mind, …

Recommendations For Lay Leadership Training In Central Brazil, Ralph W. Wilde Mar 1959

Recommendations For Lay Leadership Training In Central Brazil, Ralph W. Wilde

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Evangelical pastors in central Brazil who pertain to the Brazilian denomination known as the "União das Igrejas Evangélicas Congregacionais e Cristãs" do Brasil(the U.I.E.C.C.B.) serve charges with as many as twenty-eight preaching points. Distances are great. Roads, communications and means of transportation are poor. Outpost stations, outpost Sunday schools and outpost congregations do well to see their pastor once a month. Some see him only once a year.

Since these U.I.E.C.C.B. pastors are overburdened with responsibility for sermons, sacraments and supervision, most of the speaking, teaching, witnessing and administering in the local church is done by laymen. Very few of …
