“Apostle Of Ethnology”: Agnes C. L. Donohugh’S Missiological Anthropology Between The World Wars, Benjamin Hartley
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Agnes C. L. Donohugh (1876–1966) taught at Hartford Theological Seminary’s Kennedy School of Missions between 1918 and 1944, the leading graduate program in mission studies in North America prior to World War II. The first missionary student of Franz Boas at Columbia University, Donohugh influenced the shape of graduate anthropological education for missionaries in America more than anyone else in the interwar period. Donohugh’s story provides a window into understanding how anthropology was first used in mission education in America.

An Other-Typological Illustration Of The Exodus Story According To Dr. King’S Perception Of Universal Reconciliation In His Sermon On Exodus 14:30, Sunggu Yang
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The article contends that Dr King makes an other-typological illustrative use of the Exodus story in his preaching – one of the most significant biblical narratives that the Black church in the US holds dear. This peculiar use of the Exodus story differentiates itself from the conventional typological understanding and use of the same story in the Black church’s history. While in the latter the Exodus story has a symbolic meaning of the irreconcilable conflict between the oppressed and the oppressing reality, in the former the same story contains a spiritual lesson that what is really hoped for in the …
The Abrahamic Pilgrimage Story In Sermons: An Ontological-Narrative Foundation Of Asian American Life In Faith, Sunggu Yang
The Abrahamic Pilgrimage Story In Sermons: An Ontological-Narrative Foundation Of Asian American Life In Faith, Sunggu Yang
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Sang Hyun Lee and many other Asian American scholars have found that the Abrahamic pilgrimage story has been an ontological-narrative backbone of Asian American faith constructs. This article further explores their previous research by suggesting three distinct theological narrative styles of the given Abrahamic pilgrimage saga: the allegorical- typological narrative style, the illustrative narrative style, and the eschatologicalsymbolic narrative style. However, though distinct, the styles are closely associated with one another. I will show sermon excerpts by Asian American preachers that are good examples of the theological-spiritual embodiment of the three styles.
Human Rights And The Bible, Sunggu Yang
Human Rights And The Bible, Sunggu Yang

Do contemporary Jews see the Bible as a source for a modern language of human rights?
At first glance, there are overwhelming differences between the thought world of the Bible and that of modern human rights. The HB/OT is essentially theocentric, whereas the discourse of human rights is anthropocentric. The very word “rights,” as it is used today, does not appear in the HB/OT. The nearest equivalent is perhaps the biblical word mitswah, a concept whose closest equivalent among modern secular concepts would be “obligation.”
Deut 27 And Ancient Media: The Torah Stones And The Meaning Of Covenant, Melissa Ramos
Deut 27 And Ancient Media: The Torah Stones And The Meaning Of Covenant, Melissa Ramos
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The tablets of the covenant are one of the most enduring symbols of the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy 27 the command is given to inscribe on stones “all the words of the this torah”: וכתבת על–האבנים את–כל–התורה הזאת . These stones are potent visual symbols in the Hebrew Bible, symbols of the enduring nature of the binding oath of the covenant made between God and the people. This paper will explore this connection between the ratification of covenant and the crafting of an iconic representation of the covenant on visual media. Special attention will be given to the command to …
Truth And Liberation 1.2: A Part Of My Story, Paul Anderson
Truth And Liberation 1.2: A Part Of My Story, Paul Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
In contrast to both religious and political approaches to power, truth is always liberating, and that’s what Jesus came to bring. However, if truth is personal, it is not a static reality, but a dynamic one. Therefore, in following Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life, the question is not simply how can we seek the truth; rather, we also must be open to being found by the truth. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must do so in Spirit and in truth; those are the sorts of people that God actively seeks, desiring to draw …

Jesus says in the Gospel of John, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” (John 8:32) But what did he mean by that? And, what does that saying mean to you and me today? On one hand, we in the modern era might take this to mean that the discovery of truth about the world, science, and technology will help us do problem-solving in ways that lead to progress. After all, modern science has led to the eradication of many illnesses, food and drinking water are more available now than ever before in human history, …
