Exploring The Role Of Islamic Identity In The Rise Of Boko Haram, Samuel Kayode Atewologun
Exploring The Role Of Islamic Identity In The Rise Of Boko Haram, Samuel Kayode Atewologun
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the roles of Islamic identity in the rise and perseverance of Boko Haram in the northeastern part of Nigeria. This study’s significance is to contribute to the continued research and understanding of Boko Haram as an Islamic identity movement based on the unique political history of northern Nigeria, one drawing on the grievance of Muslim powerlessness in the postcolonial African state. Interpretations for the rise of movements commonly identified with militant extremism in the Islamic World tend to rely on materialist explanations or attribute them to brainwashing. A broader approach explores political …
Reconciling Illness Through Devotion: The Medicalization Of Modern Jain Faith Healing Practice Through Bhaktāmara Stotra, Aashi Jain
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There are numerous accounts of healing abounded with the Jain narratives which on one side determines bodily wellness by healing the physical body and on the other side directs the path of attaining liberation. The Bhaktāmara Stotra (BhS), “Hymn of the Devoted Gods,” composed in Sanskrit by Ācārya Mānatuṅga, (6th century-11th century) holds great relevance as a hymn of devotion in the Jain tradition. Many modern Jains theorize the faith healing potential of the BhS through the language of medical science. In this research, I argue that diaspora Jains in the US have understood the BhS’s effectiveness as working at …

Our Representative On This Island: Local Belonging And Transnational Citizenship Among Syrian And Lebanese Cubans, 1880-1980, John T. Ermer Jr
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Émigrés from Ottoman Syria and Cuba who, beginning in the late-nineteenth century, traveled not unidirectionally, from one nation to another, but between and within multiethnic, polycentric empires. Tracing their history opens a route to better understanding global legal regimes of citizenship. Weaving government records from Cuba, France, and the United States with associational records and oral history interviews, this dissertation reveals how vernacular understandings of citizenship in Cuba and the Levant, based on locally derived conceptions of belonging, but over time contended with liberalizing legal reforms meant to redefine citizenship as a state-focused and legible status. As a mobile population …

We Have The Land Titles: Indigenous Litigants And Privatization Of Resguardos In Colombia, 1870s-1940s, Gloria Lopera
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pressures for the privatization of indigenous lands accompanied the making of nation-states in post-colonial Latin America and boosted the natives' quest for colonial legal documents suitable to prove their rights over indigenous communal landholdings (known in Colombia as "resguardos"). This dissertation compares the experiences of two communities - San Lorenzo and Cañamomo-Lomaprieta - engaging with the law and producing legal and historical evidence to respond to the privatization of their resguardos. These communities inhabit the municipalities of Riosucio and Supía (Caldas) in the Western Colombian Andes. While the study explores the genesis of San Lorenzo's and Cañamomo-Lomaprieta's …
Canadian Banks And Imperialism In The English-Speaking Caribbean, Tamanisha J. John
Canadian Banks And Imperialism In The English-Speaking Caribbean, Tamanisha J. John
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Canadian banks have been important components of an imperialist system since at least the 19th century. However, their long and rich history of operating as purely exploitative entities in the English-speaking Caribbean region is often overlooked— leading to many incomplete and conflicting narratives about Canada’s role within the global system. I argue that Canada is an imperial actor that exerts agency in supporting a Canadian banking oligopoly both within Canada and in the English-speaking Caribbean. Insufficient attention is given to these Canadian banks, especially considering the power they have wielded in the Caribbean over the centuries. By analyzing the …

Primitivismo Y Poesía Femenina En El Cono Sur: Gabriela Mistral, Alfonsina Storni Y Juana De Ibarbourou, Ramon Muniz
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Primitivism is a philosophical attitude and artistic view based on the search for origins. It is linked to a simpler conception of life and has been used as a strategy to critique modernity through literature and art, as well as a means to subvert traditional and academicist paradigms in cultural production. Although most scholars have considered Primitivism as a problem of Western ideology, Erik Camayd-Freixas, Marianna Torgovnick, and Ben Etherington have shown that Primitivism is present in all cultures and that its strategies have been deployed to deal with racial, ecological, economic, artistic, and gender issues.

Criticizing Past And Modern Ideology Through Twisted Comedy Series: A Case Of "Comrade Detective", Damian Winczewski, Slawomir Czapnik
Criticizing Past And Modern Ideology Through Twisted Comedy Series: A Case Of "Comrade Detective", Damian Winczewski, Slawomir Czapnik
Class, Race and Corporate Power
The objective of the paper is to solve the interpretative controversies around Comrade Detective, one of the most original TV entertainment productions of the recent years. This production is a pastiche of American buddy police films. The plot refers to the reality of the socialist Romania in the 1980s and presents in a satirical way the local militia’s fight against the American threat. We have attempted to prove that its not only deriding the reality of the political system, but the series constitutes also a satire on American propaganda films. Although the humour in the series seems vulgar and …
The Potential Of Makerspaces Within The University To Aid In Student Professional Development, Sophia M. Medina
The Potential Of Makerspaces Within The University To Aid In Student Professional Development, Sophia M. Medina
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis demonstrates the potential positive impact makerspaces can have among humanities students who are seeking to pursue careers outside of academia. Although multimodal composition is encouraged within the humanities, lack of experience, resources, and guidance becomes a barrier for students to gain many of the technological expertise required in professional environments. In addition. many students struggle to exercise the work skills necessary within a corporate or technical environment. The makerspace can create opportunities for student development while preparing participants with career skills, such as digital literacy, collaboration, creativity, and networking. Through interviews conducted with facilitators and a company project …
Sacred Herbs And Ancient Healers: Decolonizing Traditional Mexican Medicinal Practices, Julio Carmona Rosales
Sacred Herbs And Ancient Healers: Decolonizing Traditional Mexican Medicinal Practices, Julio Carmona Rosales
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Traditional Mexican medicine is not only plants and herbs but a harmonious balance between man and nature. For the Aztecs, maintaining that balance was imperative to have a sustainable diet and a good relationship with the ecology that surrounds them. Unfortunately, the duality of the "microcosm" and nature has been disappearing from Mesoamerican thought and rhetoric of inferiority to European thoughts such as the philosophy of traditional Mexican medicine. The Aztec diet was rich in nutrients, vitamins, and amino acids. One of the essential Mesoamerican medicine manuscripts is the Badiano Codex, which has more than 150 plants. Phytochemical studies have …
Humanizing Scholarship: Going Public Via Multimodality, Mario L. Avalos
Humanizing Scholarship: Going Public Via Multimodality, Mario L. Avalos
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
“Humanizing Scholarship” offers a look into the ways that multimodality can be used to make the scholarly conversations had within the academy more accessible to members of the public. This thesis acknowledges and echoes the responsibility academics have to bridging the gap between their research and the people who so often serve as the basis for the ethnographic work being done in academia. My project does two things: First, it brings together some of the conversations surrounding multimodality and public scholarship. Second, it offers some first-hand models of multimodal compositions—the short films Don Armando and The Adjunct, and the screenplay …
Tracing The Amerindian Influence On The Caribbean Diaspora’S Beliefs And Practices: A Study Of The African And Indigenous Caribbean Religious Encounter And Its Indelible Signs, Alejandro Casas Reyes
Tracing The Amerindian Influence On The Caribbean Diaspora’S Beliefs And Practices: A Study Of The African And Indigenous Caribbean Religious Encounter And Its Indelible Signs, Alejandro Casas Reyes
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It has been five hundred and twenty eight years since the Spanish colonial presence that occasioned the annihilation of the Amerindians of the Caribbean and portions of Latin America started. Yet, the Amerindian influence is still felt all over the Caribbean and Latin America. Identifying what these influences are and where they are found, however, are questions that have not been fully answered. Passing references have been made in many works to these influences, but there is no comprehensive study on the subject; especially in the Caribbean. In that the scant literature available on the subject matter offers very little …
French Muslim Youth’S Perception Of Their Cultural Identity In A Post-Charlie Hebdo Reality In The 19th Arrondissement., Gaelle Flora Bernard
French Muslim Youth’S Perception Of Their Cultural Identity In A Post-Charlie Hebdo Reality In The 19th Arrondissement., Gaelle Flora Bernard
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
On January 7, 2015, the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical newspaper in France, was attacked by two armed men, Chérif and Saïd Kouachi, who shot and killed 12 staff members and injured another 11. The motive of the gunmen was the defense of their Muslim religion, in response to the newspaper’s history of publishing caricatures of the prophet Mohammed (AFP, 2015). This terrorist attack of January 7, 2015 continues to have a lasting impact on the lives of French people, most particularly French Muslims.
The purpose of this case study was to investigate the negotiation of Muslim youth identity …

El Teatro Cubano Entre Dos Aguas: Dos Siglos Y Dos Orillas (1986-2019), Ivonne O. Lopez Arenal
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My thesis studies a selected group of Cuban dramatists who published in Cuba during the period between 1989-2019 and others who wrote in the USA from 1986 to 2009. Despite not being sufficiently recognized by critics, contemporary Cuban theater played a prominent role in late twentieth-century Hispanic and Latin-American literature. This investigation analyzes how these dramatists reimagined the themes, plot devices, and scenarios used in traditional plays in order to challenge governmental authoritarianism in Cuba and express their experience as a minority in the USA.
My dissertation posits that both the theater written in Cuba and the US by Cuban …
The Use Of Religion In Violent Conflict, Conflict Resolution, And Peacebuilding: Cases From Uganda And Sierra Leone, Sedinam Akosua Kumah
The Use Of Religion In Violent Conflict, Conflict Resolution, And Peacebuilding: Cases From Uganda And Sierra Leone, Sedinam Akosua Kumah
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Noted as one of the most notorious rebels in Africa, The Lord’s Resistance Army has been known to commit inexcusable atrocities in Uganda, raiding villages to kill, kidnap, and loot. Since 1989, Uganda has been in a state of constant conflict because of the activities of the LRA. In this study I identify the political milieu which fomented political unrest in Uganda and neighboring Sudan, leading to the emergence of the LRA. Additionally, I examine the operations of the LRA, while uncovering the spiritual order it professed and also weaponized it its campaign of violence.
