Blessed Are The Peacemakers: Transnational Alliance, Protective Accompaniment And The Presbyterian Church Of Colombia, Michael C. Brasher
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to explore how Christian networks enable strategies of transnational alliance, whereby groups in different nations strive to strengthen one another’s leverage and credibility in order to resolve conflicts and elaborate new possibilities. This research does so by analyzing the case of the Presbyterian Church of Colombia (IPC). The project examines the historical development of the IPC from the initial missionary period of the 1850s until the present. Specifically, the purpose of the study was to consider how the historical struggle to articulate autonomy and equality vis-à-vis the U.S. Presbyterians (PCUSA) and paternalist models of …

A Phenomenological Exploration Of Black Male Law Enforcement Officers' Perspectives Of Racial Profiling And Their Law Enforcement Career Exploration And Commitment, Gregory A. Salters
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This phenomenological study explored Black male law enforcement officers’ perspectives of how racial profiling shaped their decisions to explore and commit to a law enforcement career. Criterion and snow ball sampling was used to obtain the 17 participants for this study. Super’s (1990) archway model was used as the theoretical framework. The archway model “is designed to bring out the segmented but unified and developmental nature of career development, to highlight the segments, and to make their origin clear” (Super, 1990, p. 201).
Interview data were analyzed using inductive, deductive, and comparative analyses. Three themes emerged from the inductive analysis …
Pirates, Exiles, And Empire: English Seamen, Atlantic Expansion, And Jamaican Settlement, 1558-1658, Amanda J. Snyder
Pirates, Exiles, And Empire: English Seamen, Atlantic Expansion, And Jamaican Settlement, 1558-1658, Amanda J. Snyder
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A life of piracy offered marginal men a profession with a degree of autonomy, despite the brand of “outlaw” and the fear of prosecution. At various times throughout history, governments and crowned heads suspended much of their piracy prosecution, licensing men to work as “privateers” for the state, supplementing naval forces. This practice has a long history, but in sixteenth-century England, Elizabeth I (1558-1603) significantly altered this tradition. Recognizing her own weakness in effectively prosecuting these men and the profit they could contribute to the government, Elizabeth began incorporating pirates into the English naval corps in peacetime—not just in war. …
The Japanese History Textbook Controversy Amid Post-War Sino-Japanese Relations, Maria Gabriela Romeu
The Japanese History Textbook Controversy Amid Post-War Sino-Japanese Relations, Maria Gabriela Romeu
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The relations between China and Japan are strained and continue to foster negative emotions partly because of China’s grievances about Japan’s actions during World War II and the allegedly false historiographical accounts found in Japanese history textbooks. This study will utilize historical analysis of the events leading up to the Nanjing Massacre in December of 1937, examine the Japanese Ministry of Education’s (MEXT) critical and contentious role in the selection of textbooks, used for primary and secondary schools, and will also juxtapose the controversial 2001 Atarashii rekishi kyōkasho with current Japanese history textbooks. The study will also include a syntactical …

The Evolution Of The Muslim Monarchy In El Príncipe Constante, Ricardo E. Castells
Department of Modern Languages
Don Fernando, the main character of El príncipe constante, has received most of the attention of the specialists in the works of Calderón, but many critics had also analyzed the extraordinary transformation of the King of Fez, but with significant differences of points of views and conclusions. The Muslim monarch treats the captive prince with exquisite courtesy as long as he thinks that the prince can be exchanged for the city of Ceuta. But at the end he behaves like a tyrant as soon as he realized that don Fernando refuses the exchange. This article uses the Prospect Theory …
