Architecture In Religion: The History Of The Hagia Sophia And Proposals For Returning It To Worship, Andrew Jonathan Cohen
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For nearly fifteen hundred years, the Hagia Sophia has been a constant figure in Istanbul, Turkey. The building has been the symbol of Christianity for the Byzantine Empire, Islam for the Ottoman Empire and Secularism for Republic of Turkey. It is rare that one building has had the ability to symbolize both religion and politics in the manner in which the Hagia Sophia has. One of the goals of this research is to examine the historical circumstances that have allowed this symbolism to occur. The other goal of this research is to examine the current voice that wishes to return …
La Kábala Dentro Del Discurso Contemporáneo Y Urbano: El Ejemplo De Marcos Ricardo Barnatán, Janet Otero Toledo
La Kábala Dentro Del Discurso Contemporáneo Y Urbano: El Ejemplo De Marcos Ricardo Barnatán, Janet Otero Toledo
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes the relationship between several mystic Sephardic texts called the Kabalah which include the three basic mystic books of Judaism: Sefer Yetsira, Sefer Bahir, and Sefer Zohar, and Argentine writer of Jewish descent, Marcos Ricardo Barnatan´s experimental work. The premise is that several mystic Sephardic texts have certain literary characteristics that make them fertile sources for the inspiration of writers like Barnatan. This thesis proves that Barnatan’s poetry and his first novel El Laberinto De Sion both use the most general concepts of the Kabalah in developing his literary and artistic creations.
This study is focuses on the …

Shi'a Women's Participatory Roles In The Establishing And Sustaining Shi'a Religious Identity In South Florida : Islamic Jaffaria Association, Ivanessa Maria Arostegui
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The research on the Muslim American community is largely Sunni specific and the purpose of this thesis is to add upon the limited scholarly work concerning the Shi'a Muslim American community. This study looks into the American Shi'a Muslim education experience at the Islamic Jaffaria Education Center (IJEC) and how it establishes and sustains a Pakistani Shiite Muslim identity. In addition, research on widespread American Muslim education shows high female participation on all levels, including, but not limited to, board and teaching positions. To see if this situation exists inside the Shi'ite communities an ethnographic study was conducted over the …
Implicit Metaphysis Of The Visuddhimagga : Assāsa-Passāsa As A Vital Animating Force, Elena Cecelia Amato
Implicit Metaphysis Of The Visuddhimagga : Assāsa-Passāsa As A Vital Animating Force, Elena Cecelia Amato
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research examines how assasa-passisa and its surrounding concepts are discussed in Buddhaghossa's 5th century Theravada work, the Visuddhimagga (The Path of Purification) to determine if there is metaphysical use of the term in the text and to determine if the concept of assasa-passasa is similar to the better-known Indian concept of prana (metaphysical vital animating force), indicating whether Theravada Buddhism more closely resembles other Indian religions in terms of metaphysical content. Text analysis reveals how assasa-passasa is described in the Visuddhimagga as an animating vital force, suggesting that Theravada Buddhism has an implicit ontology similar to other Indian schools …

The Hindu-Jewish Relationship And The Significance Of Dialogue : Participants' Reflections On The 2007 And 2008 Hindu-Jewish Summits At New Delhi And Jerusalem, Michael Mclean Bender
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not new and significant developments for the Hindu and Jewish faiths, and the relationship that exists between them, can be demonstrated from the results of the Hindu-Jewish Leadership Summits of 2007 and 2008 in Delhi and Jerusalem. I argue that new and significant developments can be observed with this Hindu-Jewish encounter with regards to official rulings of Halacha (Jewish law), proper understandings of sacred symbols of Hinduism, and even improved Islamic-Jewish relations.
After analyzing the approaches, themes, and unique framework found within this encounter, it is clear that the Hindu-Jewish …
Imah On The Bimah: Gender And The Roles Of Latin American Conservative Congregational Rabinas, Valeria N. Schindler
Imah On The Bimah: Gender And The Roles Of Latin American Conservative Congregational Rabinas, Valeria N. Schindler
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this research is to analyze the impact of gender on the work of Latin American rabinas within Conservative congregations in Latin America. The fact that women’s roles in Latin America and in Judaism have been traditionally linked to nurturing and caring serves as the point of departure for my hypothesis, which is that the role rabinas play within their congregations is also linked to those traits. In this research I utilize a social scientific approach and qualitative methodology, conducting personal interviews with the rabinas. While this work proves that Conservative congregations in Latin America are gendered, my …

Extended Program Notes For A Thesis Recital, Miroslav Daciċ
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis recital is to focus on an integral perfornance of Chopin's op.28 prelude cycle which consists of a CD of the recital and an analytical paper on the set. The point of the analysis concentrates on two-part and three-part formal strategies and the ways in which these divisions are motivated by features left incomplete in the first formal section. This sense of incompletion, always causing a formal division, leads to the second attempt scenario and its successful outcome. Additionally, there is an introductory discussion on the title issues and several remarks about the Prelude throughout the …

An Analysis Of Six Original Latin Jazz Compositions And Arrangements, Ruben Caban
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the cross-cultural fusion of jazz harmony and Afro Caribbean rhythms. These six compositions were chosen for the composers Master's recital to demonstrate how his writing technique was influenced by his cultural and musical experience during his years of study and performance in the United States and abroad. The instrumentation was chosen to exemplify the fusion of the traditional percussive sounds of Latin music with jazz harmony, melody and improvisation. It is important to note that even though one of the compositions, E.T., is not written in a Latin style, it was nonetheless …

Twisted Straight: A Memoir, Nicholas Garnett
Twisted Straight: A Memoir, Nicholas Garnett
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
TWISTED STRAIGHT is a 103,000 word memoir, which chronicles the author’s ten-year relationship to the ebullient, witty, but destructive woman he married, and their subsequent immersion in gay culture, specifically the circuit-party scene.
TWISTED STRAIGHT is set in the heyday of the gay circuit scene, and the 90s, the decade in which it became hip to be gay. It is a unique perspective on a sub-culture off limits to most heterosexual men. Just as importantly, the story describes a man’s search for himself, for a real connection with his electrifying but emotionally damaged wife, for a break from his past, …

Being Blue In Hawai‘I: Politics, Affect, And The Last Queen Of Hawai‘I, Bruce Harvey
Being Blue In Hawai‘I: Politics, Affect, And The Last Queen Of Hawai‘I, Bruce Harvey
Department of English
For Hawaiian self-rule activists, who retain ties to the land and forms of sociality emerging out of the land, the US is regarded as an occupier force, and nonnative ownership, whether white or Japanese, a blighting catastrophe justifying resentment and rage. The demise of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i, when an oligarchy of US white settler businessmen overthrew Queen Liliʻuokalani (1838–1917) in 1893, reduced aloha ‘āina (or land-cherishing) to a ghostly affect; to be blue in Hawai‘i, today, is to be in a state of ongoing and implacable mourning. This essay explores several affective historical scenes of Hawaiian injury: from the …
