Empowered Narratives : Drama Praxis And The Archetype As A Means To Authentic Voice For Women, Beryl Chalk Jan 1997

Empowered Narratives : Drama Praxis And The Archetype As A Means To Authentic Voice For Women, Beryl Chalk

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis contests the status of gender as a social construct by considering how women develop a personal ethnography when engaging in drama and expressive arts practices. There is no known research on drama praxis as a signifier to Australian women's identity, a major focus of this work will be, 'Who has the authority over women's expression and means of expression? Who has the authority to interpret the experience? Who has authority over other people's experience?' This thesis addresses the internalised- oppression which refers to the process by which women internalise the 'fictionalised' reality prescribed to them as women marked …

Pastoral Care For Clergy: The Need, Some Program Directions And Desired Outcomes Among Ministers Of Churches Of Christ In Western Australia, John A. Clapton Jan 1997

Pastoral Care For Clergy: The Need, Some Program Directions And Desired Outcomes Among Ministers Of Churches Of Christ In Western Australia, John A. Clapton

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The purpose of this study was to consider the pastoral care needs of Churches of Christ ministers working in parishes, propose some directions that a programmed approach to that pastoral care could take, and outline the kinds of desired outcomes to be looked for among them in Western Australia. It was demonstrated that, as with other helping professionals within the Human Services domain, ministers experience stressors which impinge on their well-being and their effectiveness as care-givers. This study examined the different contexts within which ministers must function, examining the complexities of their duties, the hazards they face and the effects …

Through A Glass Darkly, Seeking The Common Ground: The Value Of Derrida's Two Interpretations Of Interpretation For Reading Literature In Religious Education, Helen E. Collins Jan 1997

Through A Glass Darkly, Seeking The Common Ground: The Value Of Derrida's Two Interpretations Of Interpretation For Reading Literature In Religious Education, Helen E. Collins

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis investigates and demonstrates the value of using Derrida's "two interpretations of interpretation" (the Rousseauistic and the Nietzschean) to enrich the reading of literature in Religious Education with reference to I.e Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea. Religious Education has responded in recent decades to developments in pedagogy, theology, and various other disciplines such as psychology and sociology. However, religious educators do not seem to have considered the question of the impact of modern literary theory on Religious Education. Such theories have influenced the way in which literature is read and studied in the English classroom. Such developments should be …

Maritime Resource Exploitation In Southwest Australia Prior To 1901, Paul R. Weaver Jan 1997

Maritime Resource Exploitation In Southwest Australia Prior To 1901, Paul R. Weaver

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This ethnohistorical study identifies maritime resources of southwest Australia which were subject to human exploitation prior to 1901 and provides an overview of how, when and why this took. place by integrating historical, archaeological, ethnographic, and natural-science information. The resources included for discussion arc whales, seals, seabirds, guano, oysters and pearls, and fish. An argument is developed that the socio-spatial relationship which existed between peoples and marine• estuarine species in the region was determined by the physiography and climate. This relationship has always been imperfect, if not chaotic because of the unpredictability of the resources through long and short term …

Katharine Susannah Prichard's Coonardoo : An Historical Study, Marion V. Austin-Crowe Jan 1996

Katharine Susannah Prichard's Coonardoo : An Historical Study, Marion V. Austin-Crowe

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The focus of this thesis is Katharine Susannah Prichard's novel, Coonardoo ( 1929), and its capacity to provide a framework for the reconstruction of the historical situation in the North-West region of Western Australia during the period mid-1860s to late 1920s. The thesis has a dual purpose: to contextualise the novel in terms of the historical, political, ideological, and social situation; and to read the novel in ways which reveal its reconstruction of the wider historical context. My approach is a new historicist close reading of the text. Specific events or situations are scrutinised for their power to convey insights …

The 'Stunned' And The 'Stymied' : The P.O.W. Experience In The History Of The 2/11th Infantry Battalion, 1939-1945, Mary R. Watt Jan 1996

The 'Stunned' And The 'Stymied' : The P.O.W. Experience In The History Of The 2/11th Infantry Battalion, 1939-1945, Mary R. Watt

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Stimulated by a pronouncement of Joan Beaumont that prisoners of war are a neglected subject of historical inquiry this thesis undertakes an empirical and analytical study concerning this topic. Within the context of the prisoner of war experience in the history of the 2/11th Infantry Battalion during the Second World War, it puts a case for including non-operational strands of warfare in the body of Australian official military history. To facilitate this contention the study attempts to show the reasons for which historians might study the scope and range of the prisoner of war experience. Apart from describing the context …

The Majority Text Debate: A Study In New Testament Text-Critical Method, Clive E. Govier Jan 1996

The Majority Text Debate: A Study In New Testament Text-Critical Method, Clive E. Govier

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The aim of textual criticism is to recover the original text of the New Testament. By studying and comparing the many extant manuscripts it is hoped to discover which of them, or the variants they contain, arc closest to the original Text In choosing between the many variant readings, New Testament scholars developed the method of grouping manuscripts into different fom1s of text which fit the pattern of their variants. In contrast to this approach, J. W. Burgan propounded a method later identified as "The Majority Text" approach. This focuses on the Byzantine textual tradition, and assumes that its numerical …

Paired Reading : An Investigation Into Using Parents As Tutors In One Mainstream High School, Miguel R. Fernandez

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Contemporary research on reading has investigated the use of parents and peer tutors in assisting schools to improve reading accuracy and comprehension. Some of the techniques that have been used are Hearing Reading, Paired Reading, Shared Reading, Relaxed Reading, Pause, Prompt and Praise and Direct Instruction. Of these techniques, Direct Instruction and Paired Reading have been shown to be the most effective programs using parents within the primary school setting. However, many studies in Paired Reading research have lacked experimental data using parents as tutors in high schools. The aim of this paper was to assess the impact of Paired …

The Influence Of Primary School Music Programmes On Student Choice Of Music Studies In Lower Secondary Schools, Beverley Pascoe Jan 1995

The Influence Of Primary School Music Programmes On Student Choice Of Music Studies In Lower Secondary Schools, Beverley Pascoe

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The omnipresence of music in today's adolescent society in Australia is evidenced by the fact that adolescents, almost without exception, listen to and enjoy music throughout most of their leisure time, and indeed, much of their study time. A large portion of their financial resources is spent on music and its associated promotional material. It could be said that music plays a major part in their sub-culture and their lives. According to Davey (1991, p.ll), "Music is an addiction in our culture" and "the Walkman and ghetto blaster assure access wherever and whenever we choose." The obvious fulfilment and satisfaction …

Science On Television : A Representational Site For Mediating Ideology, Helen C. Singleton Jan 1995

Science On Television : A Representational Site For Mediating Ideology, Helen C. Singleton

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The emergence of a new science paradigm has been identified. It is characteristically described as structuring an organic, holistic and ecological framework for understanding the nature of reality. The modern scientific paradigm with its characteristic underlying inorganic, reductive, and mechanistic vision of reality, discursively dominates Western societies' cultural sense-making with its attempts to unlock the 'mysteries' of nature. The radically different characteristics of the new paradigm science is linked to 'rising culture' articulated in the exploratory social change of alternative social movements. The holistic principles and ecological values found variously in the environment, feminist, and new age/holistic health, peace and …

The Woman In The Dock Is A Monster: An Investigation Of Female Criminality In The Hearings Of The Perth Supreme Court, 1890-1914, Debra A. Fletcher Jan 1995

The Woman In The Dock Is A Monster: An Investigation Of Female Criminality In The Hearings Of The Perth Supreme Court, 1890-1914, Debra A. Fletcher

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Published scholarly works on female criminal activity are limited both by their meagreness and lack of supporting empirical basis, being grounded in stereotypes and assumptions. Accurate studies based on the collection and analysis of data are required to address this paucity and to provide an historical for contemporary studies. It is, however, an accepted fact that historically women commit significantly less crimes than men and their criminal activity is generally of a far less violent nature. However, when women do physically harm others, the act most often involves family members and utilises domestic tools in the commission of the crimes. …

Peggy Glanville-Hicks' Opera Sappho, A Critical Examination, Fiona Campbell Jan 1995

Peggy Glanville-Hicks' Opera Sappho, A Critical Examination, Fiona Campbell

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Over the past ten years there has been a considerable amount of renewed interest in the life and work of Australian-born composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks who wrote five operas and a substantial body of chamber music. Although most of her career as a composer was accomplished abroad, her works were a significant contribution to the development of Australian opera. There is a growing body of literature written about Peggy Glanville-Hicks, but nothing substantial has been written about her last great work, Sappho. The purpose of this minor thesis, therefore, is to examine this last grand, yet unperformed opera. This thesis will …

There he became one of the founders of Rosewood Station, a property which under the guidance of Kilfoyle and son Jack (1893-1962) became an outstanding example of successful owner/management of a north Australian beef cattle station. Among the objectives of this thesis it is important to identify the major features in the Kilfoyles' management policies which enabled them to survive environmental and economic changes which brought many of their neighbours into financial difficulty. An important element was their successful management of Aboriginal labour, …

Legitimating A Theodicy : Peter Berger And The Search For Meaning In Post-Enlightenment Society, James A. Collins

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis seeks to provide an overview and examination of the thought of the significant contemporary sociologist, Peter L. Berger. Berger is concerned with the issue of how meaning is constructed in modern, secular, bureaucratic society. Furthermore, this thesis seeks to outline, and trace the development of, Berger's thought. To achieve this the thesis examines Berger's use of the disciplines of the sociology of knowledge and religion, along with contemporary studies in religion and theology. Berger, by linking the function of a theodicy with that of making meaning, allows for theodicies to be conceived of in the broader context of …

Using a Jungian framework, this psychohistorical thesis analyses cultural trends, in the fields of painting, mental health, religion, world events, science and philosophy, for revelation of psychological content pertinent to the conditions generally favourable for the emergence of the Art Therapy field. A complex understanding of the world leading up to Art Therapy's emergence is, therefore, presented. What was found in this study …

Gals, Guys And Gender Construction: What's In It For Art Therapy, E. A. Jeppe Jan 1994

Gals, Guys And Gender Construction: What's In It For Art Therapy, E. A. Jeppe

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The aim of this thesis is to orient the reader towards an art therapy which is conscious of external dynamics of power in western society. In order to do it is necessary to look at art therapy in the light of feminism and recent post-modern theories, which include critical theory and deconstruction. Critical theory is a social theory integrating the works of Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud, which when merged with a feminist praxis (the active relationship between theory and practice) provides a method of critical analysis to investigate traditional therapeutic theories which gave rise to art therapy. The established …

The Place Of Human Services In The Uniting Church In Western Australia : Perceptions Of The Ministers And Some Consideration Of Issues For Service Delivery, Ki-Soo Jang

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis explores the relationship between the provision of human services and the role of the church with special reference to the Uniting Church's role in Western Australia. The church's involvement in human service is examined as an expression of the church's responsibility to practise the religious teachings of compassion and charity. However, such claims as to the church's responsibility were received with degrees of acceptance and resentment by different church denominations. Despite the definite teachings of the Bible about the importance of the church to the world of which it is a part, as this study has explored, they …
