The Pastor And Synod's Handbook, Arnold H. Grumm Aug 1950

The Pastor And Synod's Handbook, Arnold H. Grumm

Concordia Theological Monthly

"What a dreary and technical subject for an occasion like this, some might say, ''The Pastor and Synod's Handbook." Why not ''The Pastor and His Bible," or "The Pastor and His Sermon," or something else that has living value? What compelling interest can the Handbook of Synod have for a graduate of Concordia Seminary who, call in hand, is ready to enter the active ministry?

The Effect Of The Trend Toward Religious Schools On Public Schools, Clarence Peters May 1949

The Effect Of The Trend Toward Religious Schools On Public Schools, Clarence Peters

Concordia Theological Monthly

Before investigating the topic before us, it may be well for us to inquire· into the reason why some churches maintain their own schools. The reason is not that they do not appreciate the public school or the advantages which these tax-supported schools have brought to the people of America.

The Missouri Synod And English Work, H. B. Hemmeter May 1946

The Missouri Synod And English Work, H. B. Hemmeter

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Missouri Synod, which is about to celebrate its centennial in 1947, has been known in the past largely as a German-speaking body. Its interest and its activity in Lutheran church work in the English language are not so generally known or understood. The fact is that both the Saxon and the Franconian founders from the very beginning were interested in, and anxious to do, service in the language of their new homeland. Already before the organization of Synod in 1847 the Saxons in 1838 established their Concordia Academy in Altenburg, Missouri, enrolling at the very start one who was …

The minutes of the first session of the Fourth Free Conference contain this sentence:

Foreword, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

In prefacing a few remarks to another volume of the CONCORDIA THEOLOGICAL MONTHLY as it begins its twelve months' pilgrimage, I cannot do better than submit in translation with some comments several paragraphs written in 1879 and published in Lehre und Wehre by the sainted Prof. M. Guenther on the topic "Is the Missouri Synod Really Guilty of Overemphasizing Doctrinal Differences?"

Privileges And Obligations, Th. Laetsch Oct 1941

Privileges And Obligations, Th. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the name of the Prince of Peace, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever, we are assembled here for the purpose of considering ways and means to bring the Gospel of peace to a war-tom world and to build, maintain, and extend His Kingdom of Grace and peace in a world enslaved by sin and Satan, harassed by war and rumors of war, by malice and hatred and deadly enmity. Almost one hundred years ago a considerably smaller number of men came together in Fort Wayne, Ind., and in other communities of the Central …

The moderns look upon Verbal Inspiration as an evil, unclean thing. They call it a foul spook.

The U.L.C.A. And The Doctrine Of Inspiration, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

The reaction of the U. L. C. A. commissioners to this statement Is the following: "Our commission was unable to accept the statement of the Missouri Synod that the Scriptures are the infallible truth 'also in those parts which treat of historical, geographical, and other secular matters.' We find the words quoted not in accordance with our Lutheran Confessions (see Formula of Concord, Epitome, Introd.) nor with the Scriptures themselves.''

Lenski of Washington was asked ''to forward copies of these essays to the theological journals of different bodies for publication."

Frederick August Craemer, W. G. Polack Sep 1936

Frederick August Craemer, W. G. Polack

Concordia Theological Monthly

Some time ago, in conversation with one of our retired ministers who had received his theological training under Craemer at Springfield, Craemer was referred to as the "forgotten man of the Missouri Synod." Of course, this is not true of those who know the man who served as the head of our Practical Seminary for over forty years. They have not forgotten him, especially not those who were trained for the ministry by "Onkel” Craemer. Their eyes light up when they think of him, and what they say of him is spoken in a tone of profound love and admiration. …
