The Ipuwer Papyrus And The Exodus, Anne Habermehl Jul 2018

The Ipuwer Papyrus And The Exodus, Anne Habermehl

Proceedings of the International Conference on Creationism

Controversy surrounds the Ipuwer Papyrus, an Egyptian manuscript residing in the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, Netherlands. On the one side are those who claim that this manuscript describes chaotic conditions in Egypt at the time of the biblical Exodus. On the other side are those who deny this on the basis of disbelief that the Exodus ever took place, or who claim that the date of the events described in the manuscript are wrong for the Exodus. In this paper we show that this ancient document most likely describes Exodus conditions; and that the Ipuwer Papyrus therefore …

Exegetical Analysis Of Psalm 104:8 And Its Possible Implications For Interpreting The Geological Record, William D. Barrick Jul 2018

Exegetical Analysis Of Psalm 104:8 And Its Possible Implications For Interpreting The Geological Record, William D. Barrick

Proceedings of the International Conference on Creationism

This paper performs a detailed exegesis of Psalm 104:8 and its context (Psalm 104:5–10) in the original Hebrew to identify the timing and nature of the events about which the psalmist writes. The exegetical analysis includes the text’s poetic structure and devices, as well as its grammar and vocabulary. That interpretive process results in some significant implications. The analysis of Psalm 104:8 in its context supports a possible reference to a global cataclysmic Flood. Therefore, the psalmist’s declaration that “The mountains rose; the valleys sank down” might correspond with tectonic activity during and after the Flood. “To the place which …

Man, Machine, Scientific Models And Creation Science, Steven M. Gollmer Jul 2018

Man, Machine, Scientific Models And Creation Science, Steven M. Gollmer

Proceedings of the International Conference on Creationism

Historically, physics was the most quantitative of the sciences. Geologists and biologists built their models based on observation, categorization and generalization. This distinction between qualitative and quantitative sciences prompted the quote attributed to Ernest Rutherford that “All science is either physics or stamp collecting.” In the intervening 80 years all sciences have exploded in the use of quantitative measures to find patterns and trends in data. A review of a half-century of creationist literature shows that this transition has not been lost to the creationist community.

As this trend continues to accelerate, two areas of caution need to be taken …

A Commentary On The Book Of The Twelve: The Minor Prophets, Michael B. Shepherd Jun 2018

A Commentary On The Book Of The Twelve: The Minor Prophets, Michael B. Shepherd

Faculty Books

The books of the twelve Minor Prophets are some of the least studied by Christians today, but they contain some of the great themes of Scripture, such as God's mercy and judgment, His covenant with Israel, the day of the Lord, and the coming of the Messiah. Arguing for a canonical unity that recognizes the Minor Prophets as one cohesive composition, Michael Shepherd explains the historical meaning of each verse of the twelve books and also provides guidance for application and preaching. Pastors, teachers, and serious students of Scripture will find a wealth of insights for understanding the Minor Prophets.

Advocacy For Students With Autism: How To Best Engage And Equip Students With Autism To Excel In The Music Classroom, Mackenzie C. Kastelein Apr 2018

Advocacy For Students With Autism: How To Best Engage And Equip Students With Autism To Excel In The Music Classroom, Mackenzie C. Kastelein

B.A. in Music Senior Capstone Projects

Within the educational system, students with autism are often misunderstood or overlooked, resulting in an inadequate educational experience. This research was conducted in pursuit of collecting information on students with autism so that current music educators might be better equipped to engage these students effectively within their classroom. Six current music educators were interviewed with a series of nine questions in order to gather a small sample of what is currently occurring in American school systems when it comes to the music education of students with autism. These educators discussed the inclusion of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within …

This Is My Stage, Emily Sulka Apr 2018

This Is My Stage, Emily Sulka

B.A. in Music Senior Capstone Projects

This project is an EP, for which I wrote or cowrote all the songs, acted as producer, worked with others to record, and mixed each song. During my semester in Nashville, I was asked to write a song either every week or every other week, and the songs on this EP represent about half of what I wrote over the course of the semester. Each week, instructors would tweak arrangements and the form of each song so that we could put on a concert each Thursday, and I made sure that I used our recording studio to record the best …

“Hello? Are You Still There?” The Impact Of Social Media On Self-Disclosure And Reciprocity In Interpersonal Relationships: A Literature Review, Clara D. Costello Apr 2018

“Hello? Are You Still There?” The Impact Of Social Media On Self-Disclosure And Reciprocity In Interpersonal Relationships: A Literature Review, Clara D. Costello

Channels: Where Disciplines Meet

Social Media sites have become increasingly popular platforms for developing and maintaining interpersonal relationships. Although the usage of computer-mediated communication is normal in day-to-day life, the understanding behind how and why these relationships grow is scarce. This literature review considers relational elements such as self-disclosure and reciprocity, and how they are impacted by online elements such as an asynchronous context, controllability, and the disinhibition effect. Contrary to interpersonal relationships that develop in a physical context, the law of reciprocity is fulfilled and replaced by affirmation and recognition from relational partners, while self-disclosure continues to be a vital element within relationships. …

The Winter War: Its Causes And Effects, Ethan D. Beck Apr 2018

The Winter War: Its Causes And Effects, Ethan D. Beck

Channels: Where Disciplines Meet

The Russo-Finnish War of 1939-1940, also known as the Winter War, forms a curious portion of World War II history that bears further study. Occurring during the “Phony War”—the period of calm following Hitler’s invasion of Poland—the Winter War offers a glimpse into the attitudes of the major powers as the growing necessity of the coming war becomes increasingly clear during 1939 and 1940. Specifically, the Winter War provides insight into Soviet imperialism and its concerns over German aggression, and forms a crucial portion of the German decision to invade Russia in the summer of 1941. Without consideration of the …

The Collaborative Function Of Verbal Aspect And Aktionsart: A Distributional Analysis Of English Verb-Types, Marc A. Agee Apr 2018

The Collaborative Function Of Verbal Aspect And Aktionsart: A Distributional Analysis Of English Verb-Types, Marc A. Agee

Linguistics Senior Research Projects

This paper reviews literature in aspect studies from modern linguistics and Biblical language studies and proposes syntheses of multiple definitions given for these often-confusing verbal categories as the discussion has progressed from the Nineteenth Century to the present day. To inform these definitions, key studies such as Bache (1982), Comrie (1981), Lyons (1977), and Porter (1989) are consulted. In addition to suggesting definitions for these, this paper also discusses the best way to understand aktionsart as it functions in several related languages, and as it relates to aspect in usage. An analysis of evidence for this description as it functions …
