Image, Text, And Sound Through The Arabesque In Thoreau's Walden, Lupina Farhana
Image, Text, And Sound Through The Arabesque In Thoreau's Walden, Lupina Farhana
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This essay looks at Thoreau’s Walden through the lens of the motif of the Arabic arabesque. It first considers the arabesque in a playful paradigm, that interrupts, crosses, and breaks boundaries through a Derridean parergon. However, this event results in an overturning of the binary that had, for centuries, deemed merely the center to hold the highest of importance. Art historian Cordula Grewe utilizes Derrida’s parergon to analyze the poems of Goethe in the context of an arabesque frame which gives the sensation of sound by imitating the repeatedly playful consonants of the text written in the center. Thus, text, …
From Fast Fashion To Sustainable Slow Fashion, Isabel Agatha Millward-Pena
From Fast Fashion To Sustainable Slow Fashion, Isabel Agatha Millward-Pena
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The objective of this thesis is to express a need for sustainability within the fast fashion industry, in the form of cultural movement that acts as alternative to the current means of production, consumption, and philosophies. Sustainability within current popular discourses is often human-centered and lacking authenticity, thus I aim to highlight an alternative that is opposite of that. In doing such, I bring to light the negative effects of the industry through a case study on the fast fashion company SHEIN, who claim to be making sustainable efforts. I analyzed SHEIN’s 2021 Sustainability and Social Impact Report (SSIR), focusing …

Barriers To The Use Of Palliative And Hospice Care Among The Latino Population, Diana Ramirez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Patients suffering from irreversible and terminal illnesses may benefit from the services provided by Palliative and Hospice Care to control any symptom burden and assist in navigating complex medical decisions. Many patients may express hesitation in accepting and enrolling to this service due to misconceptions. Language barriers may add an additional layer of complexity. This study explored the challenges Palliative Care providers encounter when introducing concept of hospice to Spanish-speaking patients their families for the first time. This study implemented qualitative research methods by using semi-structured one-on-one interviews. Ten members of an In-patient Palliative Care Team at a University Hospital …
Risk, Resilience, And The Essential Experience Of Being Seen: Helping Actors Move From Self-Care To Deep Freedom With The Alexander Technique, Jennifer Schulz
Risk, Resilience, And The Essential Experience Of Being Seen: Helping Actors Move From Self-Care To Deep Freedom With The Alexander Technique, Jennifer Schulz
Theatre Faculty Publications
In actor training, Alexander Technique (AT) encourages release of tension, ease, efficiency of movement, and greater expressivity. It evokes deep transition into character, and helps the actor avoid injury. While AT often transpires in quiet spaces between an AT teacher and student, it can also be utilized as a practical tool by the director in group experiences, both in the classroom and in rehearsals, in order to restore expansiveness and brighten the creative inner life of the actor for the audience. Its principles are flexible and comprehensive, fostering freedom and play. While a certified AT teacher is required for full …
Improving Veteran Access; Status Of Operations Of The United States Department Of Veteran Affairs Work-Study Program, Kirk Allen
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The usage status of The U.S. Department Veterans Affairs Work-Study Program is examined. Beneficiary numbers from the Global, Unites States, State, and Local/County perspective are reviewed. While of essential value, the program suffers from a lack of scholarly research and government oversight, and is further hindered by restrictive administrative rules lived first-hand. Research suggests that the program is operating outside of accountability to the taxpayer, presents as unnecessarily/overly-restrictive in accessibility, and is underutilized. The program appears to not be serving all veterans to full potential.
The Work-Study Program is codified in Veterans Benefits', Title 38 United States Code, Part III, …
Writing Black Characters Out Of The Margins Of Fantasy With Secrets Of Candeo, Julienne Parks
Writing Black Characters Out Of The Margins Of Fantasy With Secrets Of Candeo, Julienne Parks
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The crawling pace that the production of diverse fantasy books has set for itself continues to reveal that Black characters and the representation of Blackness in fiction is lacking in a detrimental way. Specifically speaking, this thesis focuses on the prevalent lack of Black characters in the fantasy genre, where Black people are cast as minor characters to a white protagonist’s story like Angela Johnson from Harry Potter; cast as abominations of anti-Black stereotypes in monsters like the Uruk-hai of Lord of the Rings; and cast as side(kick) characters like Vetch from Earthsea, aka Black characters who are …

Enhancing The Relationship Between Students And Teachers In A Socially Distanced World By Humanizing Online Education: A Guide For Higher Education Instructors, Gilma Linette Ramirez Reyes
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
To maintain and continue to build long-lasting professional, educational, and personal relationships, this project provides a formal academic way of teaching for instructors, but it also that reflects what the heart of teaching should be about. It shows how instructors can facilitate care and demonstrate genuine positive intentions to their students when facilitating learning in an online environment. This goes beyond the only course content materials presented and moves to an educational experience that is cultivated through the student-instructor community.
The humanizing approach to online instruction for this project is defined as the center of communication and presence which includes …
Shopping For A Cause: Social Influencers, Performative Allyship, And The Commodification Of Activism, Emily Mckellar
Shopping For A Cause: Social Influencers, Performative Allyship, And The Commodification Of Activism, Emily Mckellar
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Since the early 2010s, social media has been a powerful tool for protestors and activists throughout the world. In times of crisis and political uprisings, users have pulled out their phones and taken to platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and, more recently, Instagram, to capture “the revolution” in real time. Although originally intended for networking purposes, social media has provided people with a digital space to share their stories, disseminate resources, and broadcast live, allowing them to share their efforts with millions.
While social media has helped assemble protests, amplify marginalized voices, and educate the public, it has also become a …
Inclusivity In Practice: A Queer Examination Of The Acceptance Of Trans Communities From The Standpoints Of Trans University Students, Sean Maulding
Inclusivity In Practice: A Queer Examination Of The Acceptance Of Trans Communities From The Standpoints Of Trans University Students, Sean Maulding
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Despite attending the same universities and working toward the same degrees, trans students and cisgender students do not always have the same experiences during their college years. In addition to the hardships associated with being a university student, members of trans communities often also face gender-based discrimination and challenges that their cisgender counterparts do not. Although the mid-size Southern California university at which this research took place has taken steps toward fostering an accepting climate for all students, the transmale, gender nonconforming, and gender nonbinary students who participated in this study continue to experience a layer of rejection due to …
Adaptation And Cultural Study Of Mythology: Exploration Of Riordan's Literature, Breanna Martin
Adaptation And Cultural Study Of Mythology: Exploration Of Riordan's Literature, Breanna Martin
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Adaptation theory is the idea that an author is taking an older text and retelling the stories in a different and often more contemporary way so that newer audiences can experience them in a different setting. Cultural studies theory is where a certain culture is studied to understand what aspects are valued within that dominant culture. This idea is used within this project, then deepened by analysis of Riordan’s conception of the transmission of myths of ancient civilizations and empires to contemporary dominate world powers and civilizations like the United States. One of the most common methods of adaptation is …
Breaking Down The Gendered Barriers In Critical Pedagogy, Tonianne Erickson
Breaking Down The Gendered Barriers In Critical Pedagogy, Tonianne Erickson
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Critical pedagogy is a teaching philosophy that guides students to question dominant discourses and the status quo, encouraging them to reflect on the part they play in these discourses. Since critical pedagogy deals with critical consciousness and sociopolitical topics, teachers who engage in this teaching philosophy are expected to exert some power in the classroom in order for students to get to that place of critical consciousness or personal growth. However, when female-identifying teachers use their power to embody critical pedagogy in the classroom, they are often met with resistance from students and fellow colleagues, rendering them unable to effectively …
“My Brand Is Sick Girl”: Identity Formation In The Young Adult Chronic Illness Novels The Fault In Our Stars And Sick Kids In Love, Natalie Thompson
“My Brand Is Sick Girl”: Identity Formation In The Young Adult Chronic Illness Novels The Fault In Our Stars And Sick Kids In Love, Natalie Thompson
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This thesis explores the identities of the chronically ill protagonists in The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and Sick Kids in Love by Hannah Moskowitz, specifically by looking at the young protagonist’s self-identity, their relationships with their family members, and the romantic relationship they have with the chronically ill male lead. John Green, who does not identify as chronically ill, writes a novel that ultimately reflects ableist ideas of the medical model of disability, which sees disability as a problem to be solved by medical intervention, and compulsory heterosexuality through the portrayal of Hazel and her relationship with …
