Daniel 8:14 And The Latter Days, Desmond Ford Jan 1959

Daniel 8:14 And The Latter Days, Desmond Ford

Master's Theses

Does Daniel 8:14 have an eschatological application? This is the problem considered in this thesis. A survey of scholarly works of exegesis in the field of Daniel 8 makes it quite evident that the majority of commentators through the centuries have limited the application of the prophecy to Maccabean times. In the nineteenth century a host of interpreters came to the conclusion that Daniel 8 was of special significance for their own age, and these writers stressed the belief of many post-Reformation scholars that Rome rather than Antiochus fulfilled the specifications of the little horn, and that the 2300 days …

A Study Of The Cleansing Of The Sanctuary In Relation To Current Denominational History, Donald Karr Short

Master's Theses

It is the purpose of this study to (1) review very briefly the experience of the believers who expected Christ to return in the year 1844; (2) to examine the teaching which grew out of this experience that has come to be known as "the cleansing of the sanctuary," and (3) primarily to discover, if possible, any additional meaning or application this teaching may hold at this time for the Seventh-day Adventist denomination and consequently for the entire world.

An Inquiry Into The Time Elements Of The Fifth And Sixth Trumpets Of Revelation Nine, Robert Lee Mole Jan 1957

An Inquiry Into The Time Elements Of The Fifth And Sixth Trumpets Of Revelation Nine, Robert Lee Mole

Master's Theses

Statement of the problem

It was the purpose of this investigation, (l) to discover whether the dates as given in the Litch-Smith view of Revelation the ninth chapter, which ends the times of the fifth and sixth trumpets on August 11, 1840, agree with both the Bible and history; and if not, (2) to determine whether a solution is possible that would agree with both factors in view of the criticism presently leveled at the Litch-Smith view. This criticism is based on the seeming inability to find historical facts to support this view, and also on the exegesis of the …

An Exegetical And Historical Examination Of The Beginning And Ending Of The 1260 Days Of Prophecy With Special Attention Given To A.D. 538 And 1798 As Initial And Terminal Dates, C. Mervyn Maxwell

Master's Theses

Purpose

The interpretation of prophecy fills an important place in the teachings of Seventh-day Adventists, Among the many prophecies they interpret is one which concerns a period variously described in the Bible as lasting 31/2 times, 42 months, or 1260 days. The accepted Adventist interpretation of this prophecy makes of this period a special era of 1260 years, and places its beginning and ending dates at A.D. 538 and 1798 respectively. It was the purpose of this study to inquire into the adequacy of these dates. Stated in another way, it was the purpose of this study to find out …

Master's Theses

Statement of the Problem

It was the purpose of this study (1) to picture the situation facing the brethren prior to the reorganization of the work, which was the task of the General Conferences of 1901 and 1903, (2) to show that the plan which was carried out, and which, as revealed to Mrs. White, received God's approval, was reorganization, not disorganization, and (3) to trace briefly the effects of this plan for concerted action as it has resulted in the great worldwide enterprise of Seventh-day Adventists today.

Importance of the Study

Evidence of God's leading in the past brings …

A Critical Study Of The Greek Words Translated Veils And An Application To The Book Of Hebrews, John Douglas Livingston Jan 1949

A Critical Study Of The Greek Words Translated Veils And An Application To The Book Of Hebrews, John Douglas Livingston

Master's Theses

Statement of the problem

It is the purpose of this study to discover, if possible, the precise meaning assigned in Hebrews 6:19; 10:20 to "the veil" mentioned in each of these verses. This study is made in the belief that this epistle comes to us from the Apostle Paul and that, accordingly, though it may contain "some things hard to be understood," it was written "according to the wisdom given unto him" by God. On this account the investigation has been carried out with confidence in the ultimate possibility of determining (1) whether "the veil" of Hebrews 6:19 refers to …

Date-Setting In America For The Second Coming Of Christ During The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Century, Wayne A. Scriven Jan 1947

Date-Setting In America For The Second Coming Of Christ During The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Century, Wayne A. Scriven

Master's Theses

The time of Second Advent of Jesus Christ has been of interest to His followers throughout the Christian age, and from time to time, some have gone so far as to fix a date for the event. In doing so, they have looked to Bible prophecies for a clue to the time of Christ's return. Perhaps the outstanding period of date-setting was during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. During that time, there was a general advent awakening throughout the world. This was very marked in America where we find prophecy used during the revivals of the 1840's in …

An Investigation Of The Syntax Of Words Denoting Time In The New Testament, Ronald David Drayson Jan 1945

An Investigation Of The Syntax Of Words Denoting Time In The New Testament, Ronald David Drayson

Master's Theses

Statement of the problem

In the English language, a word denoting time calls for the assistance of other words in order to describe the particular aspect of the time to which reference is made. For instance, the word "night" by itself describes little, but "by night" or "night-time" suggests the specific kind of time in contrast to "day time". "In the night" refers to a point of time at which something happened that did not involve the whole night, whereas "during the night" or "throughout the night" would suggest an extension of a condition or experience during the whole of …

The Life And Work Of Uriah Smith, Richard Julian Hammond Jan 1944

The Life And Work Of Uriah Smith, Richard Julian Hammond

Master's Theses

In the development and growth of the denomlnation of Seventh-day Adventists, the names of six or eight individuals appear as exerting unusual influence. Qne of these was Uriah Smith, and because of his position as editor, writer, and preacher for half a century, it seemed of value to examine his relationship to this religious body, and more particularly, to their periodical, The Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, which he edited for forty-seven years,

Statement of the problem

Included in this study is a consideration of the influences in his early years which led Smith to accept the teachings of Seventh-day …
