Reimagining The Rhetorical Canons For Professional Communication Pedagogy, Jocelin A. Gibson May 2015

Reimagining The Rhetorical Canons For Professional Communication Pedagogy, Jocelin A. Gibson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

One of the most significant challenges for professional communication educators is identifying and providing the skills students need to succeed in their careers. The rapidly evolving professional landscape complicates this identification; the skills a college student needs when she enters the program could be dramatically different from what she needs when she graduates. A crucial change in the past decade is the shift from a largely solo composing environment to one featuring distributed work, in which professional communicators “find themselves becoming "dividuals" – one part writer, one part project manager, one part programmer, one part student”; this has them involved …

J. S. Bach: The Good Lord Of Influence, Christa K. Johnson Apr 2015

J. S. Bach: The Good Lord Of Influence, Christa K. Johnson

Music and Worship Student Presentations

Many musicians stand in awe of J. S. Bach’s ability to create a masterpiece. In fact, few question his greatness as a musician, but the source of that greatness is a different discussion altogether. Was Bach’s excellent musicianship a result of good DNA, or did other causes inspire his excellence? My paper aims to identify the external influences that shaped Bach into the musician that he was. What environmental factors influenced Bach? Did his education play a role in his composition style? How did his career positions affect his works? Did Bach unite his religious beliefs with his music?

Quaker Studies

This article reports a recent investigation of the relationship between the spiritual and academic journeys of seven scholars whose fields involve the study of aspects of Sikh and/ or Hindu faith. Discussion of their experience highlights the participants' faith background and promptings to attend a Quaker Meeting for Worship as well as the initial impetus to their academic specialism, their guiding values and their self-identification. On And Off The Stage: A Look At Working With The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, Alyssa Whiddon Jan 2015

On And Off The Stage: A Look At Working With The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, Alyssa Whiddon

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Festivals like the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival allow students an intensive hands-on experience with theatrical principles seen in the professional theatrical world. There are many aspects of professional theatre, and at times, colleges that offer theatrical degrees cannot offer the full scale of practical experience needed to succeed in theatre as a profession. After outlining and analyzing three years of festival experience, it can be seen that festivals help to create a greater understanding of what is needed to work in theatre professionally. One must understand organization and management structure, as well as the fundamentals of acting, directing, …

Midcareer Women Leaving Information Technology: An Examination Of The Phenomenon, Susan F. Way Jan 2015

Midcareer Women Leaving Information Technology: An Examination Of The Phenomenon, Susan F. Way

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Midcareer women are leaving the information technology (IT) career field at a much higher rate than are men. This attrition has contributed to a decreasing percentage of women in the IT field, hindering the creativity, innovation, and productivity that can result from a diverse workforce. This phenomenological study addressed a gap in the current research by examining the lived experience of women who have left the IT field. The conceptual frameworks of the study included Rhodes and Doering's integrated career change model based on traditional turnover theory, a model of gender and power in careers by Ragins and Sundstrom, and …

To that end, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the experiences of mothers who are school principals. Strategies used to navigate multiple roles were examined through a role conflict lens. This qualitative study explored how feminism as a social identity impacts how women interpret their career and life experiences. The overarching research question that guided the study was: How do feminist-identified women make sense of their feminist identity, life experiences, and career path? The theoretical framework that provided the lens for the study included feminist, multicultural, intersectionality, and career development theories. Best Biblical Career Advice From Joseph, Bruce D. Baker Oct 2014

Best Biblical Career Advice From Joseph, Bruce D. Baker

SPU Works

The biblical character whose story best illustrates what we might think of today as a “career” is Joseph. His story fills roughly nine chapters in Genesis (37 – 45), a very large portion of the history of the patriarchs. Joseph’s path is an epic story of rising from the bottom to the top. In terms of vision, management and public service, he must be considered a standout success. But is this an example of “career”? It depends what you mean by “career.” Although the Bible does not offer much by way of prescriptive career advice, we can glean practical wisdom …

Get Your Linkedin Inmap While You Still Can, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

A few days ago, I received an e-mail from LinkedIn letting me know that the social network will discontinue its InMaps network visualization service on September 1, 2014. According to their e-mail, LinkedIn is retiring InMaps "so we can focus on bringing you even better ways to visualize your professional network." Okay, so there will be a successor to InMaps, but will this new network visualization service be available to all LinkedIn users for free like LinkedIn InMaps are?

Career, Education, Home & Family: Decision-Making Among Lds Women, Jennifer M. Vigil, Dr. Bonnie Ballif-Spanvill

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As women are given more and more options about the course of their lives, the choices become more complicated. When a woman’s level of religiosity becomes a factor, the decision-making process becomes even more complex. This paper will show how young women who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) make their decisions. It will look at their commitment to a single role, how they plan to follow in their mothers’ footsteps, the knowledge and certainty women feel about the decisions they make, how involved they are in the decision-making process, and the influence of …

The Emergence Of The New Woman In Victorian Children's And Family Literature, Geneva Korykowski Jan 2014

The Emergence Of The New Woman In Victorian Children's And Family Literature, Geneva Korykowski

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

In the Victorian era, the first wave of feminism surfaced in several influential family novels that modeled the "New Woman" instead of reinstating the "Old Girl." Characters from the novels Little Women, Villette, Jane Eyre, and The Little Lychetts as they modernize the Victorian women in the fin de siecle. Now we see a trend similar to first wave feminism beginning to happen with biology, The Hunger Games and Will Grayson, Will Grayson show examples of how a "New Man" is defined in contemporary society.

This paper provides an account of our research on balancing private life and work among highly qualified information technology (IT) professionals. Authors here build on theories regarding gender and commitment, appraisal and promotions and link these to work time behavior to show up consequences of gendered work time patterns on engineers’ careers.

Briefly, to sum up the rationale, women and men behave differently …

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Conceptualizing and analyzing the hip-hop career and the role of success therein allows us to investigate the long-term shifts in the economic and cultural capitals associated with the genre, and can help us better understand how hip-hop has achieved enduring success and respect. As hip-hop musicians continue to prosper financially and achieve unprecedented levels of success and longevity in the industry, understandings of the hip-hop career have shifted. Hip-hop musicians attempt to translate their cultural capital into financial profit by leveraging their respective personas into marketable brands and lifestyles that act as non-musical, career extending strategies. The thesis investigates how …

Utilizing Contextualized Reading In Career And Technical Education To Enhance Reading Skills, Alan Duane Darr

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The traditional education system in the United States developed a goal of sending a high number of students to post secondary schools. The expectation of going to college starts at elementary school and continues through high school and is pushed by the school district’s hierarchy. Schools annually publish numbers through the Department of Education at state and national levels of students moving to college. College progression has become such a priority that many students feel they have failed if not college bound.

Students not considered academic often move toward vocational education with the intent of post-secondary education to support a …

Sacred Selves: An Ethnographic Study Of Narratives And Community Practices At A Spiritual Center, Sean E. Currie

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many scholars have examined the religious phenomenon known as the New Age Movement, resulting in a large body of literature on the subject. Despite this abundance of prior research, only a small number of studies conducted in the United States investigate what it means to be a "New Ager" from the perspective of the members. In order to contribute to the academic understanding of New Age identities and communities, I conducted an ethnographic study of an alternative spiritual center in the Tampa Bay area, here called the Spirit Grove. My research includes over fifty hours of participant observations, ten in-depth …
