Nineteenth Century Sacred Music: Bruckner And The Rise Of The Cäcilien-Verein, Nicholas Bygate Jan 2020

Nineteenth Century Sacred Music: Bruckner And The Rise Of The Cäcilien-Verein, Nicholas Bygate

WWU Graduate School Collection

Nineteenth century music is known for its grandiose over-the-top performances. Larger-than-life orchestras, choruses, settings, length of works, and even harmonic language were all commonplace at this time. Hidden in among all of this was a movement pulling entirely in the opposite direction. Sacred music performed during the worship service had always been more conservative than its secular counterpart, but a new movement began to push for sacred music to regain what it had lost since the days of the Renaissance masters. The Allgemeine Deutsche Cäcilien-Verein (The Cecilian Society) was formed with the hope of reducing sacred music to its core …

Music And Communal Division During The French Wars Of Religion, Cameron G. Wade Jan 2020

Music And Communal Division During The French Wars Of Religion, Cameron G. Wade

Honors Theses

This Senior Honors Thesis explores the social and cultural impact of confessional musical composition and performance on the French Wars of Religion (1562-1598). Because Huguenots and Catholics identified with and were widely identifiable by their respective musical styles, cultural divisions between each confession were emphasized by differences in music. This capacity of sacred and confessionally-influenced secular music to highlight and reinforce societal divides is evidenced by the interconfessional violence that accompanied the public performance of sacred music in cities as well as the pressures imposed on composers to create music which clearly aligned with their respective confessions. As the wars …

It’S Just Muzak: Music, Activism, And Advertising., Avery Brzobohaty

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This thesis builds on recent scholarship explaining the relationships between music, advertising, and society through a series of focused case studies in the clothing industry. Globally ubiquitous and reaching all socioeconomic strata, the fashion industry offers a useful focus because, in addition products, it also sells identity. Fashion is a means for individuals to create and express identity by associating themselves with certain brands and styles that help express social, political, economic, and ethical standings as well as gender, sexuality, race, and religion. This thesis considers the ways that sound and music influence the aesthetic and mood of recent fashion …

Music And Politics In Figure Skating: American And Soviet Nationalism, Cultural Diplomacy, And Identity At The Winter Olympics, 1968–1988, Mary Bridget Golden

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This thesis situates figure skating, music, and Cold War politics during three separate Winter Olympic Games held in 1968, 1976, and 1988, examining the impact of this intersection on the sport of figure skating. Through a survey of seven Olympic medal-winning figure skating programs in the men’s and women’s single divisions and the pairs’ division, evidence of the relationship between politics and music is examined in the musical selections of the skaters’ programs. This thesis also explores the overwhelming prominence in skating programs of musical selections that appealed to the tastes of an elite majority during the Cold War, while …

Music On The Brain, Skyler Bortz

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Music surrounds us in our daily lives through the radio, social media, and our own personal playlists. Taste in music varies across individuals and cultures, but it is a singular, uniting aspect of society. Music creates connections and meaning that would be lost if the first string of an instrument had not been heard. Creativity is sparked with music which adds to the artistry of cultures and other forms of art.

As music develops artistry, so does dance. Music led movement to begin as dance developed through the centuries. While movement can occur in silence, it becomes more impactful when …

Brothers, Sing On: The Story Of Nuance, Kyle Reynolds

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

For this project, I have elected to create a documentary detailing the chronological history of the University of Akron’s all-male contemporary pop a Cappella group, Nuance. I have been a member of Nuance since the Spring Semester of 2018 and have served as the president of the group since Spring Semester 2019. Nuance was founded in 2004, making it one of …

Non-Traditional Music Classes In Secondary Public School Music Programs, Patrick J. Doran

WWU Graduate School Collection

Abstract

As U.S. demographics continue to change and schools become more diverse, music classes have evolved to better reflect their student populations. Music classes operate differently than they have in the past and offer new ways for students to receive a musical education. This thesis advocates for Non-Traditional music classes as accessible options in secondary public school music programs for students who have not opted to be involved past elementary school. Included is a discussion of the benefits of Non-Traditional music education as well as an analysis of possible barricades that may have discouraged students from participation in traditional ensemble …

Music In Medicine: Enhancing Emotion Recognition In Medical Students, Grace Chon, Debra Lew Harder, Md, Dma Jan 2020

Music In Medicine: Enhancing Emotion Recognition In Medical Students, Grace Chon, Debra Lew Harder, Md, Dma

Phase 1

Previous studies have shown that visual art courses for medical students have improved their diagnostic skills. A music course in a similar fashion may enhance their ability to recognize patient emotion in the patient’s voice. Identifying patient emotion via auditory cues allows future physicians to appropriately respond to patients’ mental states and provide empathetic care. This study proposes that medical students who complete a course in recognizing emotional cues in music will outperform a control group in correctly identifying emotion in the human voice.

Participants were randomly divided into control and experimental groups, in which only the latter completed a …
