The Enlightenment Of Percival Von Schmootz, December 3 - 13, 2015, Theatre Sheridan
The Enlightenment Of Percival Von Schmootz, December 3 - 13, 2015, Theatre Sheridan
Theatre Sheridan Productions
Fed up with a world filled with plagues, pestilence, and poor personal hygiene, a ridiculously optimistic young man sets out on a quest to end the Dark Ages. As he attempts to bring the light of hope to the world, Percival von Schmootz meets with hilariously disastrous results at every turn. It is only when things look the blackest that Percival is able to discover what true enlightenment means. A cross between Monty Python and Candide, this outrageous satirical comedy examines the ways we search for hope in our impossibly dark circumstances.
This musical was commissioned by The Canadian …

On Sport and Society
In a recent analysis of the money flow in intercollegiate football, The Washington Post, laid out in considerable detail the not so surprising conclusion that revenue at the Power Five Conferences has increased dramatically over the past decade, while spending has exceeded the growth of revenue. Nationally between 2004 and 2014 some 48 athletic departments increased their income from $2.67B to $4.49B. Despite the apparent windfall 25 of those departments ran a deficit in 2014, and two of them, Auburn and Rutgers, lost more money in 2014 than they did in 2004.

1916 Easter Rising And The Reconceptualization Of Memory, Siobhan Doyle
1916 Easter Rising And The Reconceptualization Of Memory, Siobhan Doyle
Academic Articles
Like many countries, Ireland has a chaotic and tumultuous past which results in challenges for the state in presenting history to satisfy the education and expectation of both national and international audiences. The years between 1912 and 1922 were arguably the most transformative in modern Irish history as it was a decade of war, revolution and rapid social change. The 1916 Easter Rising- a failed rebellion against British rule- is synonymous as a moment in the past which represents Irish history, characterizes Irish culture and amplifies national identity. My paper will explore how the centenary commemorations of this historic event …
The Trickster And Queen, Jagjit Sidhu
The Trickster And Queen, Jagjit Sidhu
Honors Theses
The trickster is a primary motif that appears in numerous cultures in the form of a mischievous and impulsive character, who tricks others to get what he wants. However, in reality the trickster is far from a simple-minded clown. He is actually very complex and sees through the facade of society and it’s strict hypocritical cultures and traditions, seeking to challenge these mechanisms that restrict the flow of logic and pleasure. For this paper, I will theoretically analyze the mechanism of the trickster, and the intimate relation between his trickery and his role as a culture-hero. I will apply this …

In Search Of Transformative Music Learning Experiences: Voices From The Margins In Northeastern Brazil, Nan Qi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Transformative learning occurs when individuals not only learn only some specific knowledge or skills, but also achieve a more inclusive understanding of themselves and of society through the learning process. To transform means to overcome limiting assumptions, with the potential of engendering new attitudes, psychological attributes, and behaviours. This integrated-article dissertation explores the possibility of transformative learning experiences through music with marginalized individuals in Northeastern Brazil.
The first article is based on interviews with five renowned Brazilian scholars, in order to provide a broader contextualization of Brazilian music education, as well as to shed light into issues explored in the …

Criminal Law And Common Sense: An Essay On The Perils And Promise Of Neuroscience, Stephen J. Morse
Criminal Law And Common Sense: An Essay On The Perils And Promise Of Neuroscience, Stephen J. Morse
All Faculty Scholarship
This article is based on the author’s Barrock Lecture in Criminal Law presented at the Marquette University Law School. The central thesis is that the folk psychology that underpins criminal responsibility is correct and that our commonsense understanding of agency and responsibility and the legitimacy of criminal justice generally are not imperiled by contemporary discoveries in the various sciences, including neuroscience and genetics. These sciences will not revolutionize criminal law, at least not anytime soon, and at most they may make modest contributions to legal doctrine, practice, and policy. Until there are conceptual or scientific breakthroughs, this is my story …

Lgbt People's Knowledge Of And Preparedness To Discuss End-Of-Life Care Planning Options, Mark Hughes, Colleen M. Cartwright
Professor Colleen M Cartwright
Despite the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS, end-of-life care planning among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities is relatively under-researched, especially in Australia. This paper reports findings of a survey of 305 LGBT people living in New South Wales, which examined their knowledge of and attitudes towards end-of-life care. The focus of this paper is their preparedness to discuss with healthcare providers any end-of-life care plans. The results highlight that while the majority of respondents were aware of three of the four key end-of-life care planning options available in New South Wales – enduring powers of attorney, enduring guardians and …

Culinary Jane Austen, Christopher D. Wilkes
Culinary Jane Austen, Christopher D. Wilkes
Christopher D Wilkes
In the world of domestic intimacy that Jane Austen fashions for us, food, its production, preparation and consumption, appears almost nowhere, at least in the novels themselves. But there is a complex moral economy that surrounds food, and its analysis tells us much of the broader social and economic hierarchies that swirled around the Austen families, as they engaged in a struggle for social recognition and social maintenance. When we take the Austen films into account, this analysis gains sharpness, and makes what is often inferred very clear indeed. This paper examines the social meaning of these culinary habits, first …
