Revolutionary Mourning : Black Panther Women's Poetic Contribution To The Black Panther Intercommunal News Service : (And A Collection Of Orginal Poems As A Creative Response), Amanda Michelle Boyd
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Named by the Black Panther Party as the Year of the Panther, 1969 was one of the organization's most tumultuous years. Working harder than ever since the Party's formation in 1966, men and women of the Party sought to demonstrate their dominance in the "sphere of revolutionary politics". With increased efforts, came an increase in opposing forces against the Party, resulting in the death, imprisonment, and exile of a number of the Party's male leaders. Under these circumstances, women began to fill positions of leadership, creating an interesting dynamic within an organization that is often defined by its idolization of …

“La Cara De Luna De Mi Madre”: Nuria Amat’S Revolution In Poetic Language In “Casa De Verano” (1999), David Richter
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Nuria Amat’s 1999 short story “Casa de verano” ‘Summer House’ presents the reader with a sensorial collage of unsettling language and violent images that effectively portray domestic abuse and the difficulty of escaping oppressive environments. The Barcelona writer’s text crosses the generic boundaries of narrative and poetry as her discourse flows freely and irrationally by employing a wide variety of charged poetic devices such as metaphor, metonymy, and antithesis. The story focuses on three orphan children who are prohibited from speaking about their subversive bisexual mother, from reading the few remaining books in the summer house, or from playing with …

And Still It Moves, Elizabeth Breen
And Still It Moves, Elizabeth Breen
Theses and Dissertations
This manuscript represents thirty-two poems written over three years. Major themes include: split selves, family, death, astronomy and fear of flying. I hope to showcase a diverse range of poetic forms while maintaining a consistent but fluid voice. The collection takes its name from unconfirmed anecdote about Galileo Galilei: when asked by the Italian Inquisition to recant his claim that the earth moved around the sun he did--and in doing so saved his own life. However, legend has it as he left he said under his breath eppur si muove or "still it moves." Regardless of what we say about …
The Songs Of Science : Rilke, Orpheus, And The Poetic Transformation Of The Natural Scientist, Evan Michael Gromel
The Songs Of Science : Rilke, Orpheus, And The Poetic Transformation Of The Natural Scientist, Evan Michael Gromel
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis will attempt to illustrate a connection between both the creative and trying experiences of certain natural scientists surrounding their discoveries and Rilke's vision of poetry. It will explore the implications of Rilke's figure of Orpheus, which has been characterized in part as a symbol for art's "search in which something essential is at stake" (Blanchot 215), on the poetic potential of those whose perception is grounded in the psychology of modern scientific discovery and theory; In other words, how a scientist comes to make the turn which takes them from "the work" to "the work of art".
Drive-In Sin, Shelly Stewart Cato
Drive-In Sin, Shelly Stewart Cato
All ETDs from UAB
Drive-In Sin is a collection of twenty-five poems. The poems include rhyming couplets, tercets, and quatrains, loosely-defined sonnets, triolets, and free verse. Most include a backbone of iambs, giving a sense of rhythm and continuity to the grouping. The subject matter is most often Southern, but vacillates between power-stripped resignation and brutal invective. A search for female empowerment often dictates the tone.
Homing : Poetry ; &, An Essay On The Poetic Leap In The Late Work Of R.S. Thomas, Shevaun Cooley
Homing : Poetry ; &, An Essay On The Poetic Leap In The Late Work Of R.S. Thomas, Shevaun Cooley
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Homing, as a collection, speaks to the capacity and yearning to navigate our way towards something we might call home. In animal behaviour, this seems like an instinct, hard-wired to the body. It is something I envy. By comparison, the instinct, in human behaviour, feels muffled and complicated.
These poems move between two places in which I feel ‘at home’, whatever that means: the south-west of Western Australia, where I was born and raised, and the north-west of Wales, where I lived for a time, and find myself returning to, drawn not by blood, but by longing, and a deep …

Going Into The Word-Hoard: The Writing Process, Language, And Its Implications In The Poetry Of Medbh Mcguckian And Paul Muldoon, Elizabeth Peele
Going Into The Word-Hoard: The Writing Process, Language, And Its Implications In The Poetry Of Medbh Mcguckian And Paul Muldoon, Elizabeth Peele
Theses and Dissertations
As two prominent figures of Northern Irish poetry, Medbh McGuckian and Paul Muldoon are often discussed as being "difficult" and "oblique." However, I argue that this categorization of their poetry is too simplistic and overlooks the dissimilarities in their writing process and view of language, and ultimately, in their poetry itself. By going back to the fundamentals of their works, I claim that the basis for this dissimilarity is, in fact, a differing view of the founding blocks of poetic language. McGuckian sees syntax as being the important factor while Muldoon focuses on the individual lexical meaning of words. These …
Heirlooms, Candace Gayle Wiley
Heirlooms, Candace Gayle Wiley
Theses and Dissertations
This creative thesis is a collection of poems and an essay that explores the concept of defining the self through the influence of personal and cultural heirlooms. It is particularly concerned with the inheritances that children receive, whether they are a pair of stockings or a political atmosphere. This collection consists of five sections, submitted in partial fulfillment of University of South Carolina's Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing.
