Further Developments Of The Santa Clara Ethics Questionnaire, Thomas G. Plante, Anna Mccreadie
Further Developments Of The Santa Clara Ethics Questionnaire, Thomas G. Plante, Anna Mccreadie
Psychology
Ethics and ethical decision-making are critically important for high-functioning communities, including those on college campuses. This brief paper provides further research support for the Santa Clara Ethics Questionnaire, a brief and no-cost 10-item questionnaire assessing general ethics. The questionnaire was administered to 329 university students along with several other measures to assess convergent and divergent validity. Results suggest that compassion, hope, and self-esteem predict about one-third of the variance in ethics scores. Implications for future research and use are discussed.

Steps Toward Safety For Students: Sexual Assault Prevention On College Campuses, Rosetta Dudley
Steps Toward Safety For Students: Sexual Assault Prevention On College Campuses, Rosetta Dudley
Student Writing
The deaths of Wendy Martinez and Mollie Tibbets gained national attention and raised awareness on the current issue of violence against women. Several reports of sexual assault or domestic violence have been reported at Germanna Community College and it is time to act to reduce the number of cases to zero. Movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp have been momentous and one could argue the power of right now to make college campuses a safer place. The risk-factors are many for sexual assault and violence on college campus, but the damage can be a heavy weight to carry. Betsy Devos has …

Rape Culture: Is This The College Experience?, Kayla Hoang
Rape Culture: Is This The College Experience?, Kayla Hoang
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
Rape culture is a relentless cycle that remains very prevalent on college campuses. Rape culture, as best defined in Transforming a Rape Culture, is a culture in which male aggression and violence towards women is essentially purely sexual and normalized (Buchwald). It refers to the way college students interact, the sexual objectifications they project onto each other, and the way it is dealt with. Scholars have done an excellent job of establishing the root causes of rape culture. Those roots are gender roles, such as toxic masculinity and the forcing of all responsibility onto females (Bay-Cheng and Eliseo- Arras; Jozkowski …

Stereotypes often create threatening environments for Black males on college campuses. This study sought to break the deficit narrative surrounding Black males in college by highlighting how they persisted despite facing stereotypes. Six participants were included in this study. Through interviews and naturalistic observations, we explored how participants articulated their experiences with stereotypes, how they dealt with those experiences, how the experiences shaped future endeavors, and how they used strategies to dispel stereotypes and persist through threatening experiences. Findings suggest (a) the participants dealt with internalized feelings due to stereotypes; (b) stereotypes were reinforced in various ways; and, (c) they …

2018 Symposium
This study will be reviewing the reasons why Chicano/a students have a high entry rate in post high school education and why graduation rates are so low. The following factors will be considered gender, culture, financial support, emotional support, network building and self image of Chicano/a students. From 1996 to 2012 colleges have had the number of Hispanic students increase on average 240% (Fry, 2008). This paper will discuss research done by researchers who are experts in their fields and have been peer reviewed for validity. The parameters used by researchers were students had to finished high school and attended …
Challenges And Motivations Experienced By 1st Generation Latina/O Students In Higher Education, Ereisa G. Morales
Challenges And Motivations Experienced By 1st Generation Latina/O Students In Higher Education, Ereisa G. Morales
2018 Symposium
As of 2014, Latinx have accounted for more than half of the United States population. Additionally, the number of Latinx students pursuing higher education is increasing across the country, yet these students have also shown to be the highest in not completing their degrees. Currently, there is much research on the challenges that Latinx first-generation students face in pursuing higher education but limited on the motivation to pursue and stay in college. This work explores what keeps Latinx driven to continue their education despite the challenges experienced. Factors such as college knowledge and adjustment to college will be addressed in …

The link between trait mindfulness and several dimensions of aggression (verbal, anger and hostility) has been documented, while the link between physical aggression and trait mindfulness remains less clear. Method: We used two datasets: one United States sample from 300 freshmen males from Clemson University, South Carolina and a Chinese sample of 1516 freshmen students from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. Multiple regressions were conducted to examine the association between mindfulness (measured by Mindful Attention and Awareness Scale (MAAS)) and each of the four subscales of aggression. Results: Among the Clemson sample (N = 286), the …

Comparative Analysis Of Comprehension Of Non-Content Specific Collegiate Vocabulary In Southern Adventist University Students, Molly C. Theus
Senior Research Projects
In the HAPS community there is a documented phenomenon appearing to show a lack of mastery in non-content specific collegiate vocabulary in Anatomy and Physiology students. This research seeks to investigate possible causation and propose a solution using the microcosm of Southern Adventist University students. A knowledge-based questionnaire was distributed to six subpopulations composed of lower and upper division Biology, nursing and non-science major students. The questionnaire is comprised of two parts: a section on background and reading habits, and a section with twenty multiple choice vocabulary questions. The results were compiled into a comparative analysis

Over the summer, I visited a friend from Gettysburg who was having a party. The party was fun for the first half, and I was having a good time, so I decided to stay the night instead of walk in the dark to the bus. This is what parents and educators and older sisters and women everywhere had taught me: stay with people you know; clutch your keys in your hand; don’t walk alone. I was staying with my friend from school; I was safe. [excerpt]

Remaking Selves, Repositioning Selves, Or Remaking Space: An Examination Of Asian American College Students' Processes Of "Belonging", Michelle Samura
Education Faculty Articles and Research
"Only a few studies have examined Asian American students’ sense of belonging (Hsia, 1988; Lee & Davis, 2000; Museus & Maramba, 2010). Scholars who study Asian American college students have suggested that Asian Americans are awkwardly positioned as separate from other students of color vis-à-vis the model minority stereotype (Hsia, 1988; Lee & Davis, 2000). Furthermore, Asian Americans often are viewed as overrepresented on college campuses, yet they remain under-served by campus support programs and resources and overlooked by researchers. Many Asian Americans have gained access to higher education, but the ways in which they belong on campuses is unclear. …

Research Brief: "Out From The Shadows: Female Student Veterans And Help-Seeking", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This study explored what happened when female veterans brought three military-cultural contexts (responsibility, worth, and pride) into their transition to civilian life and help-seeking attitudes in college. In practice, student veterans exhibiting components of military culture should use these military cultural components to their benefit, and student veterans struggling to adjust to the type of thinking often required of college students should feel comfortable seeking support at their university student veteran center. In policy, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) might continue offering their campus toolkit, which has been found to be a great resource for many IHEs, offering them …

Young, Gifted, And Brown: Ricanstructing Through Autoethnopoetic Stories For Critical Diasporic Puerto Rican Pedagogy, Ángel Luis Martínez
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Young, Gifted and Brown is a journey of two directions converging. It is a study of Puerto Rican Diaspora in higher education, specifically, students making sense and meaning of their everyday. It is also a study of how I have related to them as a professor. Together, this is a story: research done creatively, toward the development of Critical Pedagogy for Puerto Rican Diaspora. The research question is: what has made the Puerto Rican Diaspora in the United States flourish and their lived experience meaningful? How can a diasporic people connect with and affirm their roots in an educational system …

College Life During World War I, Grace Hevron

World War I stands out in our nation’s history as a war that was fought with honor and with dignity. When we read literature or study the events that surrounded the First World War we are swept away to a time that is very different from our own. This time period of honorable warfare and black – and – white ideology is no longer here but we as Americans still have a lot in common with those that fought in World War I. A college education is still a necessary commodity in 2014 and college students today face the same …
