Honors Scholar Theses
Our criminal-justice system mandates the silencing and disappearing of 2.3 million people, a consequence of its historical context as an inherently violent institution, carrying on traditions of slavery, oppression, and extortion. While any voice that makes it out of a prison cell is resisting the effort to silence, smother, and make compliant the voices of those labeled criminal, the form of publication of that voice allows more or less agency to the author depending on its conventions and structures. There is a spectrum from more controlled or mediated forms of publications to more author-directed ones and they vary over the …

Minimizing The Dangers Of Air Pollution Using Alternative Facts: A Science Museum Case Study, David H. Lee
Minimizing The Dangers Of Air Pollution Using Alternative Facts: A Science Museum Case Study, David H. Lee
Publications and Research
A science museum exhibition about human health contains an exhibit that minimizes health impacts of air pollution. Relevant details, such as the full range of health risks; fossil fuel combustion; air quality statutes (and the local electrical utility’s violations of these statues), are omitted, while end users of electricity are blamed. The exhibit accomplishes this, not through outright falsification, but through selected “alternative facts” that change the focus and imply misleading alternate explanations. Using two classical rhetorical concepts (the practical syllogism and the enthymeme) allows for the surfacing of missing evidence and unstated directives underlying multimodal rhetoric. By stating multimedia …

What does involve leading a new experience of teaching and learning under the new paradigm of a true knowledge society? Is it about mastering the teaching experience through critical reflection, or knowing the natural and social environment in its multiple interactions? Isn’t it about favoring an educational environment where students are not only limited to participate in a traditional way, but expect to find meaning to their learning experience and be able to build the acquired knowledge? This article allows to identify different stages in the new educational models within a multicultural environment. In other words, a field where teachers …

Authors Of Independence: Comparing Thomas Paine And Camilo Henríquez As Revolutionary Writers, Sean Gray
Authors Of Independence: Comparing Thomas Paine And Camilo Henríquez As Revolutionary Writers, Sean Gray
History & Classics Student Scholarship
An nineteenth-century Chilean writer, Fr. Camilo Henriquez was a fascinating figure—a Catholic priest whose religious beliefs more closely aligned with Deism, a prolific proponent of Chilean independence, and, for a short while, the president of the Chilean Senate. Because of his role in creating La Aurora, the first Chilean newspaper, Henríquez is often considered the “father of Chilean journalism” and the “mentor of the revolution." But to understand his role in the Chilean independence movement, we must juxtapose him with Thomas Paine, the pamphleteer extraordinaire of the American Revolution. The Enlightenment’s ideals of liberty and equality influenced both men, and, …
How To Promote Education For Sustainable Development? Vision Of The Educational Situation And Its Contribution To Sustainable Development., Khalid Aada
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
During the last decade, the importance of leaving a rational paradigm, debtor of functionalist and utilitarian models, towards another more congruent with the preservation of natural resources, and therefore of life, has been widely discussed. In the same way, different voices have been raised, pointing out the urgency of inserting these precepts into the educational field, hoping to achieve the true cultural transformation that is needed to consolidate the change. Multiple International Entities promote sustainability in Education as an initiative that should be ambitious, complex and reforming character, given the global scope of the social, economic and environmental situation affecting …

La Favola D’Orfeo And The Role Of The Operatic Orchestra, Sarah Anderson, Grant Estes, Peyton Hansen
La Favola D’Orfeo And The Role Of The Operatic Orchestra, Sarah Anderson, Grant Estes, Peyton Hansen
2019 Festscrift: Claudio Monteverdi's Orfeo
One of Claudio Monteverdi’s greatest contributions to the opera was his unification of musical ideas and theoretical philosophies passed down from his predecessors. These ideas were mostly concerned with the way in which a composer could manage instruments and voices in a dramatically satisfying way. Monteverdi’s La Favola d’Orfeo was the first opera to employ new musical philosophies that would come to characterize the genre. In this essay, we will outline operatic orchestration practices before Monteverdi and connect them to the La Favola d’Orfeo to demonstrate the profound shift that Monteverdi brought to the development of modern opera.

Virtual Reality As A Pedagogical Tool For Interdisciplinarity And Place-Based Education, Laureen Park
Virtual Reality As A Pedagogical Tool For Interdisciplinarity And Place-Based Education, Laureen Park
Publications and Research
Place-based education (PBE) has long been recognized as a high-impact educational practice. It embeds learning in a multi-sensory context that nurtures active, praxis-driven, interdisciplinary, and collaborative learning. More recently, educators have begun to utilize digital media and virtual reality technologies in ways that seem to parallel PBE. Using phenomenological concepts, especially following Edmund Husserl and Alfred Schütz, this chapter explores what the parallels and differences might be between physical and virtual places, ontologically as well as in its pedagogical role in PBE. It also attempts to interpret the other chapters of the book in light of the philosophical implications.
