Four Lds Perspectives On Images Of Christ: Introduction, Doris R. Dant Jul 2000

Four Lds Perspectives On Images Of Christ: Introduction, Doris R. Dant

BYU Studies Quarterly

As members of a Christ-centered church and consumers of a proliferation of visual images, Latter-day Saints face the enigma of wanting to know their Savior but not having a detailed description of either his mortal or resurrected physical appearance. how should an artist depict Christ? Why do individual members have both strong attachments and aversions to certain images? What conscious principles, if any, stand behind the selection of images for use in official and unofficial LDS publications?

That's Not My Jesus: An Artist's Personal Perspective On Images Of Christ, James C. Christensen Jul 2000

That's Not My Jesus: An Artist's Personal Perspective On Images Of Christ, James C. Christensen

BYU Studies Quarterly

When I was growing up, I was taught that we should not have pictures and statues of Christ on our homes or meetinghouses. Nothing was to come between us and the individual image each of us had of the Lord we worshipped. Now members of the LDS Church are expressing a need for a good image of the Savior that they can reflect upon. For artists, that shift becomes a major challenge as they work to create the desired imaged.

"That's How I Imagine He Looks": The Perspective Of A Professor Of Religion, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel

BYU Studies Quarterly

"Images of Christ in Latter-day Saint Visual Culture" by Noel Carmack offers an outline of the history of the Latter-day Saint use of images depicting Christ, pointing out influences and tensions that Carmack argues directed the choice of these images from 1890 to 1999. My own approach to this historical pattern is a simpler one: the selection of images of Christ by most Latter-day Saints today is influenced more than anything else by the Saints' cultural background, which determines how they think Jesus would look; and the proliferation of these images is largely an economic issue and a result of …

Examining Six Key Concepts In Joseph Smith's Understanding Of Genesis 1:1, Kevin L. Barney Jul 2000

Examining Six Key Concepts In Joseph Smith's Understanding Of Genesis 1:1, Kevin L. Barney

BYU Studies Quarterly

Joseph Smith spent Sunday afternoon, April 7, 1844, in a grove behind the Nauvoo Temple. There he gave a funeral sermon, which lasted for over two hours, dedicated to a loyal friend named King Follett, who had been crushed by a bucket of rocks while repairing a well. Known today as the King Follett Discourse and widely believed to be the Prophet's greatest sermon, this address was Joseph's most cogent and forceful presentation of his Nauvoo doctrine on the nature of God, including the ideas of a plurality of Gods and the potential of a man to become as God. …

Images Of Christ In Latter-Day Saint Visual Culture, 1900-1999, Noel A. Carmack Jul 2000

Images Of Christ In Latter-Day Saint Visual Culture, 1900-1999, Noel A. Carmack

BYU Studies Quarterly

The motivating impact that visual images of Christ have on members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints cannot be overestimated. Such images often induce feelings of faith and devotion in responsive viewers. For example, Church member Lisa Gemperline of Kaysville, Utah, wrote to the Ensign saying:

Passing a local art gallery one day, I paused, struck by the beauty of painting of Jesus Christ on display. My heart was touched as I looked at the face of the Savior, and I wished I had had the painting in my own home. Afterward, I found myself thinking about …

"What Think Ye Of Christ?" An Art Historian's Perspective, Richard G. Oman

BYU Studies Quarterly

In "Images of Christ," Noel Carmack has performed a real service on several fronts. In my response, I would like to suggest some modifications to his comments and, more importantly, discuss some features that I believe a great painting of Christ must have if it is to produce a spiritual change in the lives of its viewers.

Tomizo And Tokujiro: The First Japanese Mormons, Shinji Takagi

BYU Studies Quarterly

In August 1901, Heber J. Grant and his companions arrived in Japan to open the first permanent mission in Asia and begin their difficult proselyting labors among the Japanese. It took them almost seven long months to claim the first fruit of their labors. On March 8, 1902, on the shore of Omori in Tokyo Bay, Hajime Nakazawa, a professed Shinto priest, was baptized, confirmed, and ordained an elder. This event was symbolic indeed. For one thing, Nakazawa was presumably affiliated with a religious sect whose roots went back to the ancient indigenous religion of Japan. For another, more interestingly, …

"Pleasing To The Eyes Of An Exile": The Latter-Day Saint Sojourn At Winter Quarters, 1846-1848, Jennifer L. Lund

BYU Studies Quarterly

Early on the cold, clear morning of November 21, 1846, John D. Lee "arose from sleep," dressed, and "walked out" into the streets of Winter Quarters. Struck by his first view of daylight, he wrote:

I was astonished when I looked around and saw what serious enterprise and industry had brought to pass within 6 weeks past. A city of at least 400 houses had been erected in that short space of time, through the ingenuity and industry of the Saints. No other people but the Saints of God has ever been known to accomplish as much in so short …

In A.D. 1000, the Icelandic Parliament held their annual two-week summer session in Parliament's Field, a remote area of southwest Iceland where they had convened each year since A.D. 930. In this lush plain, where lava cliffs bear witness of fire meeting ice, Christianity was adopted as the official religion of the entire Icelandic nation. The year 2000 marks the millennial anniversary of this event. It is also a year of reflection for Latter-day Saints, as the first LDS chapel in Iceland will be dedicated in the summer of 2000.

The Dance Of First Beginnings: Contemporary Maya Creation Rituals In A World Context, Allen J. Christenson Apr 2000

The Dance Of First Beginnings: Contemporary Maya Creation Rituals In A World Context, Allen J. Christenson

BYU Studies Quarterly

A nearly universal characteristic of ancient societies is to periodically carry out ceremonies and festivals intended to renew life, particularly in connection with the creation of the world. Many of these ceremonies are tied to New Year's celebrations, linking the start of the calendar year with the beginning of time itself. Such ceremonies reinforce the notion that when the world left the hands of deity at the time of its birth, it had greater power to sustain life and nurture its inhabitants. But as with all things, the passage of time and the wear and tear of day-to-day existence inevitably …

Statistics On Suicide And Lds Church Involvement In Males Age 15-34, Gilbert W. Fellingham, Kyle Mcbride, H. Dennis Tolley, Joseph L. Lyon

BYU Studies Quarterly

Suicide rates among young adults in the United States have been on the rise in the past four decades, with white males at greatest risk. In 1897, Emile Durkheim proposed that religion provided a source of social integration that decreased the likelihood of suicide. His hypothesis was based on research of religious affiliation and suicide rates in Europe. Pope's reanalysis of Durkheim's data, using covariates such as economic status, casts doubt on Durkheim's interpretation of the data. However, others have suggested that religious affiliation is an important factor in the study of suicide, and studies including religious measures other than …
