El Que No Tiene Dingo, Tiene Mandingo: The Inadequacy Of The "Mestizo" As A Theoretical Construct In The Field Of Latin American Studies - The Problem And Solution, Andrew Rosa
History Faculty Publications
At a recent lecture at Temple University titled The African Presence in Puerto Rico, a young African woman from the island proclaimed to the audience that the Black experience in the United States is indeed unique and, because of her "mestizo" heritage, acculturation, racism, and struggle were not a part of her historical experience. As I looked on the face of my beautiful African sister, my heart shattered into a thousand little pieces. The lessons passed down to us from our African ancestors in the oral tradition-el que no tiene Dingo, tiene Mandingo-have finally fallen on deaf ears. Their struggle …

"If You Can Educate The Native Woman...": Debates Over The Schooling And Education Of Girls And Women In Southern Rhodesia, 1900-1934, Carol Summers
History Faculty Publications
As the turn of the century, European settlers, officials, and missionaries in Southern Rhodesia were apathetic about promoting African girls' schooling. By the late 1920s, however, all sectors of the European community-settlers, officials, and missionaries- were debating whether, and for what reasons, girls should attend mission schools.1 Europeans discussed girls' and women's schooling as a strategy for coping with problems in the social and economic development of the region. Some Native Commissioners hope that disciplined moral education would encourage women to remain in rural areas and take responsibility for their families, supporting the system of migrant labor. Many missionaries …
How Realistic Can A Catholic Writer Be? Richard Sullivan And American Catholic Literature, Una M. Cadegan
How Realistic Can A Catholic Writer Be? Richard Sullivan And American Catholic Literature, Una M. Cadegan
History Faculty Publications
Despite the fact that Sullivan never achieved the fame he sought, the record he left behind reveals much about the way one writer handled the complicated personal and professional questions of regional, literary, gender, and religious identity. He was a regional author with national ambitions, a serious author who did not disdain the notion of popular success, and a male author whose primary focus was domestic life and relationships. He was also a Catholic author-that is, he belonged to a tradition that believed in normative standards for artistic value in an era when such a belief was considered by some …
The Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Century Sugar Industry In The Lafourche Country, John Alfred Heitmann
The Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Century Sugar Industry In The Lafourche Country, John Alfred Heitmann
History Faculty Publications
The Lafourche Country's narrow highways, characteristic swamplands, and ever present tidal pools convey to the unfamiliar visitor the feeling of being in a strange and rather mysterious land far removed from modern technology and culture. Yet, this land's navigable waterways, favorable climate, and rich soil has long favored a productive sugar cane industry that has been neglected by scholars. A careful examination of the past reveals that the Lafourche Country sugar industry ranked as an equal in terms of innovation and productivity to that of the well-studied plantations along the Mississippi River and Bayou Teche. Indeed, both in the past …
Independent Christian Colleges And Universities, William Vance Trollinger
Independent Christian Colleges And Universities, William Vance Trollinger
History Faculty Publications
The category independent Christian colleges and universities is not a very large one. The reason for this is rather simple: as William Ringenberg has noted in the introduction to his helpful 1988 bibliography on such schools, "there are not many contemporary colleges and universities that are both continuing Christian in philosophical orientation and independent of denominational ties in governance." While this may change in the future, given the weakening of denominational loyalties among American Protestants, the fact remains that there are not too many independent Christian colleges.
For purposes of this essay I will I be looking at fourteen institutions. …

Workers, Unions, And Historians On The Northern Plains, William C. Pratt
Workers, Unions, And Historians On The Northern Plains, William C. Pratt
History Faculty Publications
Labor history has come of age over the past three decades. Today two national journals, Labor History and Labor's Heritage, focus on this subject in the United States, and many others, including the Journal of American History, publish articles in the field. In fact, much of what is called new social history often treats labor history topics, and many western historians have had an extended interest in labor history. Numerous recent examples, including the work of Carlos Schwantes, Michael Kazin, Vicki Ruiz, and others have been well received.

"Young Germans, Not Young Greeks And Romans": Art, Culture And Educational Reform In Wilhelmine Germany, Charles E. Mcclelland
"Young Germans, Not Young Greeks And Romans": Art, Culture And Educational Reform In Wilhelmine Germany, Charles E. Mcclelland
History Faculty Publications
The demand to inculcate young Germans in a modern and German-nationalist spirit rather than the traditional reverence for classical antiquity emanated from no lesser person than Wilhelm II in 1890. But the previously little-examined backstage of reformed professional education and decision-making in lesser civil-service offices, private schools and impersonal art markets were real driving forces for change, including the embrace of what we call modernism.
The Professionalization Of Artists: A New Approach To The Social History Of Art, Mcclelland
The Professionalization Of Artists: A New Approach To The Social History Of Art, Mcclelland
History Faculty Publications
Perhaps because of the somewhat inchoate and seemingly disorganized nature of the world of the arts, most students of modern social history and professions have steered clear of engagement with this fascinating crowd. Yet further acquaintance with the subject reveals that artists did in fact attempt to professionalize, and -- even if their efforts were not as successful as those of some others -- these efforts left a clear record of articulated demands and statements.
