When I counsel my students about how to approach a research topic, the first thing I tell them to do is to read a good general article on the subject in one of the several standard scholarly Bible dictionaries. Such a strategy does several things: (1) it provides an overview of, and “feel” for, the subject; (2) it offers insight as to how one might organize their research; and (3) it suggests bibliographic resources with which to move deeper into the subject. That is usually sound advice; however, when it comes to the study of leadership in the Bible, that …
Moral Reasoning: An Intentional Approach To Distinguishing Right From Wrong, Michael Jones
Moral Reasoning: An Intentional Approach To Distinguishing Right From Wrong, Michael Jones
Faculty Publications and Presentations
This book represents a unique contribution to the study of ethics: an introductory textbook that is designed to be very readable while at the same time being deeply philosophical. It leads the reader on an exploration of the major approaches to ethics that have developed in the Western philosophical tradition: Ethical Relativism, Virtue Ethics, Natural Law Ethics, Ethical Egoism, Utilitarianism, Duty Ethics, Social Contract Theory, and Divine Command Theory. It discusses the chief strengths and weaknesses of each and opts for a modified Divine Command Theory while retaining the useful elements of each of the other theories. Written in a …

Religious Liberty In The Early American Republic, Steven Samson
Religious Liberty In The Early American Republic, Steven Samson
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The early nineteenth century in America was a period in which the idea of religious liberty came to be worked out in practice in a setting of growing diversity. The immediate effect of the dissolution of state religious establishments was to strengthen the vitality and prestige of the churches themselves. Before the end of the century, the church historian Philip Schaff could regard as normal 'a free church in a free state, or a self-supporting and self-governing Christianity in independent but friendly relation to the civil government.'

Racism At Home And Abroad: Thoughts From A Christian Ethicist, Michael Jones
Racism At Home And Abroad: Thoughts From A Christian Ethicist, Michael Jones
Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this article Christian ethicist Michael S. Jones introduces the work of Princeton University ethicist Thomas Pogge on the areas of global poverty and global justice. He then applies Pogge’s ideas to an ethical issue of continuing importance: racism. He discusses the history of racism in the United States and Romania, pointing out numerous parallels both historical and contemporary. He then discusses the appropriate attitude for Christians to adopt on the issue, arguing that while Christian sources are not univocal on the subject, there is an egalitarianism at the heart of Christianity that rules out racism as a Christian attitude. …
Implications Of Theological Anthropology For Online Pedagogy In Graduate-Level Ministerial Training, Gabriel Benjamin Etzel
Implications Of Theological Anthropology For Online Pedagogy In Graduate-Level Ministerial Training, Gabriel Benjamin Etzel
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The thesis of this dissertation is that by utilizing a biblical-theological framework, best practices of online graduate-level ministerial training can be presented in such a way that the role of the faculty, the objectives of the classroom, and the purpose of the institution are focused more effectively on the formation of students as ministers of the gospel. It is argued the role of the faculty member should be a model for students to follow, which necessitates institutions prioritize theological competencies ahead of technological and pedagogical competencies when hiring faculty, and institutions prioritize the faculty member's ongoing spiritual formation in the …
Evidence For The Historical Jesus: Is The Jesus Of History The Christ Of Faith?, Gary R. Habermas
Evidence For The Historical Jesus: Is The Jesus Of History The Christ Of Faith?, Gary R. Habermas
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The subject of the Historical Jesus is perhaps the most popular religious topic in settings such as university and seminary classrooms, written volumes, and doctoral dissertations. Unlike many of these more formal situations, the question-and-answer format utilized throughout this text allows plenty of space to develop additional angles. Hence, the backtracking, necessary repetition, as well as viewing the subject matter from a variety of perspectives allow the conversation to deepen significantly before moving ahead. In the process, it is our hope that new ideas will be expressed and developed. The overall purpose is to provide a historical context for the …

Perceptions Of Spiritual Formation Among Nontraditional Seminary Students, Jacob Dunlow
Perceptions Of Spiritual Formation Among Nontraditional Seminary Students, Jacob Dunlow
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Theological higher education is going through massive changes as a result of the technological changes in education. Many seminaries have gone from a strictly on campus option for students seeking a master's degree, to a variety of options available to students. Given this recent shift, research is needed to study the impact of these nontraditional means of education on the training of future pastors and church leaders.
This research was conducted with the purpose of studying students who choose to attend seminary through a nontraditional means of online, hybrid, and extension centers. Specifically, exploring the relationship between mentoring and the …
Religion As Philosophy And Art In The Work Of Lucian Blaga, Michael Jones
Religion As Philosophy And Art In The Work Of Lucian Blaga, Michael Jones
Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article introduces the thought of the Romanian philosopher Lucian Blaga on religion as a cultural creation that has value apart from questions of the truthfulness of religious doctrines. According to Blaga, religion has considerable aesthetic and philosophical significance. The article places this insight within the context of Blaga’s metaphysical vision and his analysis of epistemology and illustrates it with a new translation of one of his most famous poems.

Dando Um Jeito: An Integrated Theological, Historical, Cultural And Strategic Study Of Missio Dei To, In And Through Brazil, Joao Mordomo
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Since it’s descobrimento on April 22nd, 1500, Brazil proved to be resistant to Protestant and Evangelical Christianity until the 20th century. However, by the end of the century, Brazil had, in many missiologists’ minds, transitioned from being a missionary field to a missionary force. There is one Brazilian trait in particular that serves well to describe both God as He has orchestrated the evangelization of Brazil, and Brazilians as they increasingly have fulfilled their role in God’s global mission to, in and through Brazil. This trait is summarized in the expression dar um jeito (pronounced “darh oon jhei’-to”). While a …
Old Earth Theology: A Factor That Explains Inconsistent Belief Of Inerrancy Among Florida Southern Baptists, David A. Mcgee
Old Earth Theology: A Factor That Explains Inconsistent Belief Of Inerrancy Among Florida Southern Baptists, David A. Mcgee
Faculty Publications and Presentations
A major shift in thinking seems to be occurring in contemporary evangelical thinking. Southern Baptists overwhelmingly rejected the views of twentienth-century liberal Southern Baptist professors in favor of a literal translation of Genesis. Now, however, this debate may not be so one-sided among Southern Baptists. Within the current evangelical community there is a belief that the age of the earth has no bearing upon the doctrine of inerrancy. A study was conducted in 2013 that reveals belief in the age of the earth is one factor that contributes to the degree to which the doctrine of inerrancy is affirmed. The …

Inerrancy. Does It Matter?, David A. Mcgee
Faculty Publications and Presentations
David A. McGee, a member of Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz and a candidate for the doctor of education at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., recently completed research used in his dissertation titled “A Mixed-Methods Study of the Variables that Influence Florida Southern Baptists' Affirmation of the Inerrancy of the Bible." The research was sparked by McGee’s interest in understanding if a historic struggle over the inerrancy of Scripture—largely played out among Southern Baptists during the Conservative Resurgence in the latter part of the 20th Century—affects the way in which congregants today not only view the Bible …
