Leading Thoughts On Eschatology In The Epistles To The Thessalonians, L. Fuerbringer Aug 1942

Leading Thoughts On Eschatology In The Epistles To The Thessalonians, L. Fuerbringer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In our discussions of the leading eschatological thoughts in the Epist1es to the Thessalonians we now proceed to a new section. In -the previous installments we have noted that the Lord will return suddenly, as a thief in the night, 1 Thess. 5:1-3; that He will not return before the great Antichrist will have been revealed, 2 Thess. 2:1-13. But the apostle also shows the purpose for which the Lord will return, namely, for vengeance upon the unbelievers and for the glorification of the believers. This truth is stressed particularly in the section 2 Thess.1:3-12, to which we now turn …

The Principium Cognoscendi In Theology, W. H. Dau Aug 1942

The Principium Cognoscendi In Theology, W. H. Dau

Concordia Theological Monthly

The subject submitted for our consideration this morning presents a somewhat forbidding aspect. "The Principium Cognoscendi in Theology" - that sounds like a rather abstruse, metaphysical proposition. I hasten, therefore to assure you that this subject has a definite practical bearing on every part of the work which we are doing and preparing to do as preachers, ministers, pastors, missionaries in the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is to enable us to determine, in regard to ourselves and others, when a person is really a theologian in the estimation of Lutherans and when he is turning out genuinely …

Leading Thoughts On Eschatology In The Epistles To The Thessalonians, L. Fuerbringer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In view of the importance of the matter, we return once more to Paul's discussion in 2 Thess. 2: 3-12, where the apostle sets forth that before Judgment Day the great falling away will occur and the Antichrist, whose nature and activities are described at some length, will put in his appearance. The passage was expounded verse by verse, various interpretations were presented, and finally augments were advanced why the Lutheran Church in its Confessions has justly applied this passage to the Roman Papacy. Since this historical line of argument is of particular significance in our day, we refer to …

Verbal Inspiration- A Stumbling-Block To The Jews And Foolishness To The Greeks, Th. Engelder Jul 1942

Verbal Inspiration- A Stumbling-Block To The Jews And Foolishness To The Greeks, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

The moderns have many more objections against Verbal Inspiration. To three of these they attach special importance. They denounce Verbal Inspiration as "a mechanical theory of inspiration"; they abhor it as "resulting in an atomistic conception of the Scriptures"; they abominate it as establishing "the legalistic authority of the letter." -The old evil Foe means deadly woe. The appeasers have up till now been telling us that nothing is lost if the Church gives up half of the Bible, seeing that they are willing to let her retain the important half, the Gospel message; if only the saving truths be …

Verbal Inspiration- A Stumbling-Block To The Jews And Foolishness To The Greeks, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

Before examining three further objections against Verbal Inspiration, it will be well to pause a while and survey the disaster wrought by the contention of the moderns that the Bible contains a lot of (1) errors, (2) immoralities, and (3) trivialities. Amplifying previous remarks on this subject, we would here present a comprehensive view of the frightful consequences of the denial of Verbal Inspiration. The moderns do untold harm (1) to the Church and (2) to themselves.

Leading Thoughts On Eschatology In The Epistles To The Thessalonians, L. Fuerbringer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the two previous articles of this series we have treated the section 2 Thea. 2:3-12, in which Paul points out that, although the day of judgment will come suddenly, it will not come before the great falling away and the Antichrist will have made his appearance, and in which the apostle also describes in greater detail the nature and activities of Antichrist. This section has been the subject of much controversy. Moreover, the very fact that many will not recognize the Antichrist and will be deceived by him is an important factor in the "deceivableness of unrighteousness" and "strong …

The First English Lutherans and the First English Lutheran Theological Seminary

''Martin Luther" is written over the page with the names of Gardiner, Cranmer, Thirlby, and Bilney, the degree list of Cambridge in 1521.

A committee was sent to London to have Luther's books examined and to get an order from Cardinal Wolsey to burn them - Drs. Humfrey; Robert Ridley, uncle of the martyr; John Watson, praised by Erasmus; and Henry Bullock, a pupil of Erasmus, ''most learned Bovillus," now professor of Greek and vice-chancellor.

The books were burned on Market Hill about the Easter term, and the grand …

Leading Thoughts On Eschatology In The Epistles To The Thessalonians, L. Fuerbringer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In our discussion of the leading eschatological thoughts of the Epistles to the Thessalonians we first of all called attention to the teaching of St. Paul that the Lord will return, and will return suddenly, as a thief in the night, 1 Thess. 5:1-3; in the second installment we pointed out that He will return only after the great Antichrist will have been revealed, 2 Thess. 2:1-12. The discussion of this second division has not been completed. After warning his readers not to let themselves be misled into believing that the Day of the Lord had already arrived and after …

But what may it mean that I have knowledge together with myself? Let us illustrate. If I know a secret together with my neighbor, then this means not only that we both know the secret, but also that each knows that the other knows it. If, then, I say that I know something together with myself, this means not only that I know something, but that I am cognizant of the fact that I know it.

Leading Thoughts On Eschatology In The Epistles To The Thessalonians, L. Fuerbringer Apr 1942

Leading Thoughts On Eschatology In The Epistles To The Thessalonians, L. Fuerbringer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In his First Epistle St. Paul had directed the Thessalonians not to concern themselves about the exact time and hour of the return of Christ. Chap. 5: 1, 2. But that was just the thing in which many within the congregation were particularly interested. Already from the First Epistle we see that the return of Christ had become so live a question within the congregation that many had become disturbed over it; some had gone so far as to neglect their daily work, idly depending on others to support them, and in their fanatical zeal many regarded spiritual matters as …

The moderns have a third grievance against the Bible as God gave it to us. They are scandalized at the many "trivialities" incorporated in it. Those portions of the Bible, they say, which treat of purely secular matters, common household affairs, petty concerns of men, and the like, do not belong to the Word of God. God's Word is too high and holy a thing to have these levicula mixed up with it. It is inconceivable that, when the Holy Ghost inspired the saving Word, He should have bothered about the marital affairs of Isaac and Rebecca. The moderns are …
