Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 3486. Letters, 3 November 1866 and 23 May 1867, of Dallie Duncan to her mother in Pontotoc, Mississippi. Returning for another year of school at Science Hill Academy, Shelbyville, Kentucky, she writes of her roommates and clothing purchases, asks about various family members, and warns that her tuition should be paid before she leaves school, noting the headmistress’s criticism that “Mississippians never paid their debts when they could help it.” She also expresses concern for her recently widowed mother’s emotional and physical health. Letter, 11 February 1862, to his mother and siblings from Joseph Warr, Company A, 2nd Minnesota Volunteers. From Somerset, Kentucky, he writes of troop movements toward Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he expects a victorious battle. He describes a recent encounter with Confederate forces crossing the Cumberland River and the severe wounds of those taken prisoner, but declares that the enemy would otherwise have shown no mercy. Chiefly courtship letters written by Edward Daniel Covington while teaching high school industrial arts classes at St. Petersburg High School in Florida to his girlfriend and future wife, Evelyn Reynolds, Cave City, Kentucky. The 1933 letters mention the financial effects of the Great Depression and the difficulty of paying teachers.

Cherry, Indianapolis, Indiana, to John Marion Stahl, Jr., Bowling Green, Kentucky, in which she states her desire “to make your life happy and sweet.” It includes a facsimile of a $7 postal money order from Cherry to Stahl. In April 1915, Cherry sent a promissory note for thirty dollars to be drawn on Bowling Green’s American National Bank. She did not sign the note, so also included is a short letter to Stahl from J. Whit Potter, President of the American National Bank advising Stahl that the …

Parker, Louisville, Kentucky. She expresses hope for the education and success of Samuel’s newborn son and advises that she and her husband are doing well at “the best business place on the river.” She notes amenities in Louisville such as “large handsome stores,” an abundance of berries and other foodstuffs, steam and flatboats on the river, and good blacksmithing, despite a shortage of coinage. The goal of this project is to promote diversity within beauty and continue the push for representation and inclusivity. I conducted research on the history of makeup in America during the 1900s and studied how the makeup industry has evolved into what it is today. Rihanna’s launch of Fenty Beauty in 2017 was seen as the start of a new era, challenging beauty brands to be more inclusive. As Fenty created a new industry standard of 40 shades, many other brands followed suit. I then compared my findings with the experiences of real women in my community. I interviewed 10 …

This thesis seeks to understand public perceptions of women politicians in Germany, specifically Chancellor Angela Merkel, and evaluates these perceptions based on gender, region, and representation of CDU/CSU female legislators in the Bundestag. While literature suggests that there are benefits of greater female representation in legislatures, there is a lack of research regarding how this representation impacts perceptions held by the citizens these women represent. Important to the study is also the difference in perceptions according to gender and the former East/West divide in order to understand the gender gap in Germany and the extent of the social impact left …

Sadie Jane is a novella set in the town of Gypsum, a fictional location in rural Kentucky. The introduction covers the inspiration for the novella, which is based on Southern storytelling traditions and features the adventures of Sadie Jane, an independent octogenarian who returns to her hometown after many years. Sadie experiences the internal challenges of regrets and grief as well as the external challenges of busybodies and car thieves before finding her place in the community.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 673. Correspondence, business, and legal papers of various members of the Bate family of Sumner County, Tennessee. Some of the children are located in San Augustine, Texas. Most of the correspondence centers around the mother, Ann Franklin (Weatherred) Bate and her children, particularly Eugenia Patience (Bate) Bass Bertinatti and Humphrey Howell Bate, and to a lesser degree their siblings. Includes extensive documentation about the financial and legal condition of Bertinatti after the Civil War. The originals are in the Tennessee State Library & Archives, Nashville, Tennessee.
