Wabanaki Youth In Science (Ways) Wskitkamikw "Earth" Camp Application, Wabanaki Center, University Of Maine

WaYS is a long-term program to engage Wabanaki students (grades 6-12) through their cultural heritage and environmental legacy to encourage and promote persistence in sciences through college and into a career. Innovative and unique, WaYS engages students in a year-long multi pronged program through a one-week summer Earth Camp, year-long internships/mentorships for high school students; and year-long Traditional Ecological Knowledge programs through Teen Centers or tribal Boys/Girls Clubs. Critical for success, it provides each student with mentoring from both cultural knowledge-keepers and natural resource professionals.

The Institutional Biosafety Committee form for protocol registration. Registration is required prior to use of recombinant, synthetic nucleic acid activities, biological materials (human and animal blood, body fluids, tissues), animal, human and plant pathogens, and imported live biological materials. Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) registration is required prior to use of ‘biohazards’ in research. Under UMaine policy, ‘biohazard’ includes recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules (including plants), biological materials/biospecimens (human and animal blood, bodily fluids, and/or tissues), infectious agents* or select agents/toxins. (*The University of Maine has defined “infectious agents” as all bacterial, parasitic, fungal, viral, and prion, included within Class 2 or higher classes; See Appendix B of NIH Guidelines.)
